Some other P12 games on September 14:
Texas Tech at Arizona
Arizona State at Michigan State
USC at BYU
Oklahoma at UCLA
But if UCF is still undefeated heading into the Stanford game, it could be more intriguing than anything else on the calendar that day. The networks will want a prime time game.
I will guarantee, off the top, that Oklahoma at UCLA, and USC at BYU will be more compelling as far as a national audience than our game. Which means our game is going to be, at best, third in our conference. And right now nationally, the Pac-12 is not as relevant as the other conferences, which means that also says nothing about any other marquee matchups in more successful/relevant conferences nationally. Finally, for all of UCF's success over the past two years, they are still a Group of 5 school. Their marquee non-conference home game this year against Pitt was on ESPN-U with a 12:30pm PT kickoff. Granted, we have been a better, and perhaps, more compelling program than Pitt, but I think the idea that this game ends up on ABC Primetime for example is overly optimistic.

West Coast schools should never agree to contracts with East Coast schools that allow games to be played at 12pm ET.
As for game's appeal, it could well be what the TV purveyors look for - Top 25 teams from different conferences - depending on how Stanford does against Northwestern and USC.

The opening stretch just got that much tougher.
Agree, but I suspect there will be a bit of an adjustment to Kingsbury. By 2020, Daniels has the potential to be scary.
Interesting question as to what $C is trying to do ... or become on offense.
As far as I know, Kingsbury has had a rather consistent offensive approach - an air-raid, Dykes/Leach disciple.
It looks to me that in every year but one he was at Texas Tech, they had the highest ratio of total yards from passing in their conference. And that's in the Big 12.
They're slightly less extreme than WSU, but it's basically the same approach.
That has never been the approach at U$C. $C has mostly tried to be a balanced, traditionally pro-style offense. For many-a-recent-year they were the most similar in the conference as Stanford as to their approach on offense. Helton has taken that approach, though this year they were passing at a greater rate than the last two years.
So, has $C decided to go air-raid, all-pass offense?
Does $C have personnel well suited to that? [smaller quicker OL, tons of WR, accurate but not necessarily strong armed QB]
Has $C decided Kingsbury will be just as good running a more pro-style offense?
Or has $C made no such decision at all, and simply noted Kingsbury was a big name on the market?

If UCF beats LSU they could enter next year ranked in the top 10 (they were in the 20's this year, but that was after losing Scott Frost). They'll have gone undefeated for two straight years. If we beat Pitt and can manage Northwestern and USC next year we'll likely be top-20.
I don't think anyone cares about BYU, and Oklahoma vs UCLA won't be a draw because Oklahoma will annihilate UCLA. It depends on what the other conferences put up.
I dunno, it obviously depends on how things play out, but I don't see why it wouldn't be a marquee game.

Fox sent their No.1 team (Gus and Joel Klatt) to Norman for this year's OU-UCLA matchup, despite everyone knowing it would be an annihilation.
Next year, when UCLA figures to be better, and the chances for an upset increase with OU having to go on the road to Pasadena, that looks like a Fox 4pm PT or 5pm PT written all over it to me.

What Fox does is probably only marginally relevant.
The game is in Florida, so it will fall under the AAC television deals. I believe they have only a contract with ESPN.
Of course there's lots of competition among the various broadcast rights ESPN has, but not that particular game.

looking at the UCF schedule this year their Saturday home game kick-off times and TV were
08 Sept South Carolina St 6pm ET on ESPN3
29 Sept Pitt 3:30pm ET on ESPNU
06 Oct SMU 7pm ET on ESPNU
10 Nov Navy 12noon ET on ESPN2
17 Nov Cincinnati 8pm ET on ABC
they also had one Thursday and one Friday home game
they had one road game on a major network (@USF on Friday 23 Nov 4:15pm ET on ESPN) and another on a split broadcast (@Memphis Sat 13 Oct 3:30pm ET ABC/ESPN2 (RM))
so maybe not a noon ET kick-off (only one home noon kick-off this season), but it also does not look like it will be one of ESPN's major broadcasts that day given that most of their games were on ESPNU or ESPN2 or ESPN3 unless the ESPN pickings are very slim that day

- Never crazy about weekday games, but I guess we should be thankful for just one.
Well, when we have home games early in the season people complain that we have too many games before students arrive. One upshot of not having any home games for nearly a month after hosting Northwestern is that students will be on campus for six home games (compared to three, I think, this year).

If they could pull ABC vs Cinci then why not for us? We'll have to see what else is out there when the other conferences announce their schedules, but this seems like it could easily be the best game of the week.

That is very true. I liked 2017 a lot because we had all of the games when students were there. I retract that part of the complaint. Still would be nice to spread them a little more in the latter part so there's not one single big gap; 2017 was great in that after students came back we never went more than a couple weeks w/o a home game. But I suppose I shouldn't get too greedy, it could be an even year schedule!

Some comments:
1) Are we the only team in the country whose entire schedule includes nothing but Power 5 conference games and currently ranked non-conference opponents? I'm guessing the answer is yes and that there are very few teams even playing 10 or 11 such games. For reference, Alabama's non-conference schedule includes Duke, New Mexico State, Southern Miss and Western Carolina. So their number is 8 vs. our 12. (I'm not comparing Stanford to Alabama, or the Pac 12 to the SEC. But c'mon ya big bullies, go pick on someone your own size!)
2) UCF has only two Power-5 games on their schedule next season, Stanford and Pitt. One way or another, they'll be playing the 2018 Sun Bowl champion.
3) Here is UCF's schedule for 2019:
https://fbschedules.com/ncaa/ucf/. They face opponents with such colorful names as the "Rattlers", the "Green Wave", the "Golden Hurricane", and not one but two teams that call themselves "Owls", which is a great name for a quidditch team but not one that connotes football power. UCF is a very serious opponent, but I breathed a little easier after reminding myself of the type of schedule they play. I feel like an 8-4 Power 5 team (and certainly one that played SDSU and ND) could have a very reasonable shot of going 12-0 against their kind of schedule.
4) I like that the ND game, probably the toughest on our schedule, comes at the end of the season. If we've had a rough year, it will give us one last shot at redemption on a very big stage. And if we're lucky enough to have a shot at the Pac 12 CCG, it won't affect our status one way or the other.
5) I agree that replacing Utah and ASU with Colorado and Arizona is a big help. But it doesn't come close to making up for replacing SDSU and UCD with UCF and Northwestern!
This is not a schedule for a CFP contender, but we aren't likely to be one anyway. The bright side is that there will be many opportunities for quality wins - that's for sure!

Well, UCF's schedule for 2018 included one Power 5 team they actually played (a game with UNC got cancelled).
That was Pitt. UCF won 45-14.
We'll have a comparative score available in a month.

The UCF game here was in 2015, not sure when the games were originally scheduled, so they were not quite as good then as they are now, they were 0-12 that season.....

Even aside from the quality of the teams, Orlando the first week of September. Not only is it hot and humid that time of year, there could also be a hurricane that postpones a game. Then, at the end of the year, Colorado and WSU in November on the road back to back weeks could be really bad weather.
No team will have a tougher 4 games to open their season. David Shaw will have to be better than this year just to equal this year, and way better to get to conference title contention.
it would have been nice if we could have played at Colorado in september and at Central Florida in november.
but at least no one can accuse us of having an SEC-type schedule.

It is very difficult to make the College Football Playoff. It requires an incredibly talented team, some lucky bounces and a favorable schedule. It is something that I hope to see Stanford do at some point in my lifetime. However, as long as we keep scheduling like this, it is virtually impossible.

I expect a dropoff at UCF but they will still be a tough out. I couldn't care less about whether Milton plays I just hope he's OK that was a brutal injury.
NU will have a new QB, but he's a 5-star recruit who transferred from Clemson. And they have a better coach, too.
I'm lowering my expectations for next season. This schedule is brutal.

Just for comparison's sake, the SEC's OOC opponents for September 14 (all SEC home games) are:
Colorado State
Kent State
Arkansas State
Northwestern State
Southeast Louisiana
Kansas State
Southeast Missouri State
UT-Chatanooga
Lamar
My biggest disappointment in the playoff committee, and the NY6 committee, so far, is that they have consistently rewarded the SEC for scheduling 5 byes each season. The majority of the SEC starts the season with 4 wins in the bank and must win two league games to become bowl eligible.
