RE: 2019 Football signing day - Phogge - 12-20-2018

Good on Buhl. Don McMahon. He played a very aggressive brand of Rochambeau in the Giants clubhouse with Bob Priddy and others.

Who were the two second basemen in the Adcock, Logan, Mathews Braves infield?

I think Ron Herbal was the worst hitting pitcher.

RE: 2019 Football signing day - BobK - 12-20-2018

Don McMahon was alife long riend of Al Davis.

No idea on the 2nd baseman

Buhl hit 089 with 2 doubles in about 850 ABs
Herbal hit 029 in 200 or so ABs. But 2 of his 6 hits were doubles. LOL

You win again.

RE: 2019 Football signing day - Phogge - 12-20-2018

Red Schoendienst and Felix Mantilla.

Well what do you know?  The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I wrote to Stanford complaining about the Signing Day Press Conference only being available on Facebook due to my disdain for the company, and got a reply back, saying Stanford will be re-evaluating its content distribution choices, along with a YouTube link to the Shaw presser.

So if anyone else wants to avoid Facebook and still watch Shaw actually say some insightful things, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPa8pti4_P0&feature=youtu.be

Well, that's not quite right. Stanford tried very hard for JT Daniels and was even believed to be the leader at one point. Obviously he went with SC, which, fine, whatever, you win some, you lose some. The approach post-Daniels was the problem: the coaches seemed to be kicking the tires with a bunch of guys but never got around to offering until Hilinski, deep in the year. It was a worst of all worlds approach and now the team's got a good returning starter in Costello and big question marks with West and Mills. If fortunate, the team might be able to squeeze through without incident. If not, there'll be problems.

The problem with not having a QB in this class isn't with next year, it's with 2020 when the depth chart is Mills, West, and Richardson (if he stays for a fifth year), followed by true freshman McKee and walk-ons. McKee is almost certain to redshirt - Shaw has repeatedly said that it takes at least a full year and often longer to master enough of the offense to be successful at QB.

I really don't understand why one scholarship QB in every class isn't a top priority given the higher uncertainty of development/success and higher risk of injury.

I also don't understand the complete absence of DL either.

Shaw explained in his presser, which is more insightful than most you will see, why they do what they do with QBs. There is a certain logic to it. I would add that it's pretty rare for two QBs to be out injured at the same time like last Spring. And speaking of that, the most surprising almost unbelievable thing he said was "Spring doesn't matter." Would have been nice for a reporter to dig deeper into what he meant there.

"Spring doesn't matter" sure doesn't fit with all the rhetoric we've heard about how long it takes Stanford QB's to master the playbook and learn to run the offense. It would be interesting to hear Shaw try to reconcile the two.

does this imply that Stanford listens?

LOL, it confirms they listen to the PC messages.  But in this case, the end justifies all means.

This isn’t a PC issue as much as a personal privacy, security, and health one. If restaurants can provide gluten-free options when only 10% of the population can be harmed by gluten, Stanford can provide Facebook-free options to deliver its content because 100% of Facebook users can be harmed by it. Anyone not terrified of using Facebook really should educate themselves about it.

To avoid turning this into a non-Stanford or sports topic, DM me if you want to share your own thoughts on the matter.

This thread should rightfully continue discussing Shaw’s signing day presser.

LOL. College football coaches talk like they are running a CIA op. They are not quite as important as they think they are.

If spring doesn’t matter why risk injuries at all. Just practice like Gagliardi at St. John’s.

I've always thought you make a mistake if you take what football coaches say at face value.

What Shaw perhaps means is spring ball matters, but not as much as you might think it would.

Since Shaw's comment was in reference to number of QBs on the roster, I think what he means is it doesn't matter if QBs participate in Spring or not. The reason might be that there are so many volunteer workouts where QBs and receivers get to practice route running, throwing, and catching. Mills and Costello are at this point expected to participate in Spring drills, but reading between the lines, you might expect Mills and West to get most of the reps. We'll see.

Yeah, I agree that Mills and West will probably get most of the reps in spring ball.
This will be a test of whether Mills's knees will hold up, although since QB's don't take much in the way of hits during spring ball. perhaps not a great one.

of course, the acid test of whether Mills's knees will hold up would be playing on the artificial turf of the Sun Bowl.....
