RE: Softball starts Friday - BobK - 02-08-2019

Great to have Mandy Dwyer back pitching again.

So when did they eliminate drag bunting? That was a shock

They started enforcing players staying in the box on bunts last year. Hannah H. got called out for that a couple of times last year.

Maddy was solid today. Not her best outing, but certainly more than enough.

Starting to get a little bit excited about this team.  Two 12-spots in two games, 2-0 record.  I know it's not Pac-12/9.  And there are five other undefeated Pac-12/9 teams, with Cal yet to play.  Still, I'm optimistic, like what I see, particularly in the field.

In the first game of a two game set today, freshman Emily Klingaman goes deep for a 3-run HR (she has 4 RBI today) in the bottom of the sixth to give
Card a 5-1 lead against Western Michigan.

Cardinal are three outs away from a 3-0 start.

And the Card finish off the Broncos on a gem from Carolyn Lee. A ridiculously efficient 64 pitch complete game gives
Stanford their third win in three games.

In Game #4 this season, Emily Young continues the torrid pace for the Stanford offense
with a 2-out grand slam (inside the park no less) to left center field. Card lead 4-0 heading into the Top of 4th.

And Kristina Inoyue follows up on the Emily Y. HR with a 2 run HR of her own to just about ice
the game away for Stanford in the bottom of the sixth. Stanford leads 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth,
and poised to head to 4-0 on the season.

It got a little nervy at the end, but Stanford staves off a 3-run rally by Seattle in the top of the seventh
to win 6-4, improving to 4-0.

I was going to ask if there was a live feed somewhere until I saw we gave up 3 in the top of the 7th! Was about to quickly shut the browser down to preserve our luck but we win 6-4 to go 4-0.

The 2 Freshman Emily Young and Emily Klingaman combined for 8 of the 11 Stanford runs today and holding down the middle infield. Freshman Emily Schultz was 2-4 today. Emily X 3..... lol

Keeping all of the Emilys straight is going to be a challenge for all of us fans for the next four years. But a welcomed challenge obviously, since they are all great student-athletes. Can't even imagine how the coaching staff handles it. Last names maybe?

Final game of the tournament will get started at 11:00am (30 minutes late), as we look to go 5-0 at the Kajikawa Classic to start the year. We get Weber State, who are coming off a 21-1 loss to ASU last night (and perhaps stunningly, it was even worse than the scoreline indicates). We might be getting an angry WSU team today, so I hope we are ready to face a motivated opponent.

RE: Softball starts Friday - d4cohn - 02-10-2019

Carolyn Lee strands two WSU runners in scoring position with 1 out on back-to-back K's.

Then Emily Schultz drives in Emily Klingaman after Emily Young led off the inning with a single. :)

Card out in front 1-0 heading to bottom of 2nd.

Well, WSU saving their ace for their game against us (who nearly got a win against Oregon State 4-3; she didn't pitch at all during
the 21-1 rout last night at hands of ASU) is having
the predictable effect on the game. Pitcher's duel through 5 1/2 innings. Tied at 1-1.

Bonus softball in the desert. 1-1 heading to the 8th.

RE: Softball starts Friday - d4cohn - 02-10-2019

We don't capitalize on 2nd and 3rd with one out, and it costs us.

Stanford falls 2-1 in 8 innings. Hard to be perfect, and a 4-1 record at this tournament is a
big improvement from last year. However, these types of games are the next step in the
development of the program. Finding ways to win when you are tired and at end of long weekend,
facing another team's ace and best shot.

Still a lot to be happy about after this weekend.
