Stanford Women’s Tennis
UPDATE: Due to inclement weather in the Seattle area, today's match has been moved up to 2 p.m

I live a couple miles from UW. It's snowing lightly with less than an inch of accumulation. However, it is supposed to snow all night and end up with 6-8 inches. This much snow in Seattle is very unusual, and the city doesn't have the equipment to keep the roads clear. We had 3 inches on Sunday, and schools were closed Monday and Tuesday. Seattle is very hilly, if you haven't been here. The main east-west street in my neighborhood has been closed for 5 days as it is too steep to navigate with any slickness. I have lived in Colorado (Denver), and snowy driving in Seattle is much more demanding.

I suspect the cancellations are for the safety of the staff, including building/concessions/etc. who would have a difficult time getting out of their neighborhoods. The teams are probably fine, as there is a light rail line that goes underground from near the tennis center straight to the downtown hotel district. FYI, UW also cancelled the women's basketball scheduled for Saturday.

(I wasn't criticizing Seattle, I understand the challenges, just struck by the irony.)

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-08-2019

N.C. State leads Georgia 1-0

The match on Court 1 right now would be fun to watch: #2 Katarina Jokic (UGA) and #25 Anna Rogers (NCST) on serve in their third set.

Georgia should really win this match without a ton of trouble, as they have better depth (including five ranked players to NC State's one). But #10 Marta Gonzalez is down a break in her third set on Court 2 against an unranked opponent and #102 Lourdes Carle lost in routine fashion on Court 3 to an unranked opponent.

And now it's 2-0 to N.C. State as Smith beats UGA's Gonzalez 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. On Court 1, Jokic was serving for the match, up 5-3 in the third, but Rogers broke to get it back on serve, and she'll serve now to level it at 5-5. UGA won the first set on Court 4 but is down a break in the second, and Courts 5 and 6 are both on serve late in the first set.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-08-2019

Stanford is getting started now that the first three courts in Texas-Northwestern finished up:

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 0-0
2. Lord trails 5-7, 0-0
3. Lampl leads 6-3, 1-1

The other three matches will have to wait for one of these to finish, or else the Texas-Northwestern match to finish.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-08-2019

Gordon being the first off court is just awesome, because that never happens. A comprehensive 6-4, 6-2 win over the #19 player in the country? Yes, please.

Lampl follows soon thereafter with a 6-3, 6-4 win and it’s 2-0 Stanford.

Remaining on court:

2. Lord leads 5-7, 6-1, 3-0
4. Arbuthnott leads 3-0
5. Shin trails 1-2
6. Higuchi tied 1-1

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-09-2019

Lord won her third set 6-0, and Arbuthnott sped to a 6-2, 6-2 win to close out the win. A weird format, but a 4-0 win nonetheless.

Shin lost her first set, but I figured Corley would test her.

Looks like they’re going to play the quarterfinals at the STC today, with Stanford going last at 8:30pm against Texas. The winner gets the Vanderbilt-Georgia winner sometime tomorrow.

They might need to do doubleheaders tomorrow just to get all the consolation matches in if teams aren’t sticking around through Monday, so tomorrow’s schedule promises to be pretty jam-packed.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-09-2019

Never mind—all matches today have now been cancelled.

No idea how they’ll handle the logistics starting tomorrow. If everyone planned on flying back Monday evening, then you can do 8 matches tomorrow (the 4 QFs and the first 4 consolation matches), and then do added matches Monday along with the semis, and then do the final on Tuesday, with just those two teams pushing back a flight.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - Spiny_Norman - 02-09-2019

CT - do you follow the men too? They won the final 3 matches vs. #5 USC in LA for a thrilling 4-3 victory yesterday. Stanford plays UCLA today then off to Chicago for the National Indoor Championship next weekend. Maybe the team is not in a position to challenge for national championship (yet), but Coach Goldstein seems to have them headed in the right direction.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - BobK - 02-10-2019

Looks like we play at 10 today

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-10-2019

Spiny, I do follow the men, though not nearly as closely as I do the women. (The frequent recent championships have cemented that loyalty, too.) The two programs were on roughly even footing when I was in high school, but that obviously hasn’t continued. I’d be thrilled if they reclaimed their spot atop men’s college tennis, though!

And yes, we’re up at 10am, and at Nordstrom, so the live video should work.  One thing to watch for: does Petra Granic play? Texas is much weaker without its #3.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - BobK - 02-10-2019

It’s doubles first today and it has started

We trail slightly. Very early though

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - BobK - 02-10-2019

We win the doubles. Up 1-0

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-10-2019

In singles, here are the matchups:

1. #23 Gordon vs. Bianca Turati (currently unranked due to skipping the college fall season to play low-level pro events, but she was the preseason #1)
2. #46 Lord vs. #52 Anna Turati
3. #57 Lampl vs. #101 Bojana Markovic
4. #16 Arbuthnott vs. Fernanda Labrana
5. #37 Shin vs. Katie Poluta
6. #44 Higuchi vs. #107 Tijana Spasojevic

Stanford 1, Texas 0

1. Gordon leads 5-4 (on serve)
2. Lord trails 3-6, 0-1 (down a break)
3. Lampl leads 6-1, 1-3
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 0-0
5. Shin leads 6-1, 1-1
6. Higuchi trails 2-6, 1-2 (on serve)

Stanford 2, Texas 0

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 2-1 (on serve)
2. Lord trails 3-6, 2-4
3. Lampl won 6-1, 6-3
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 3-2 (on serve)
5. Shin leads 6-1, 2-5
6. Higuchi trails 2-6, 4-4

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-10-2019

Stanford 2, Texas 2

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 4-1
2. Lord lost 3-6, 3-6
3. Lampl won 6-1, 6-3
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 3-4 (down a break)
5. Shin tied  6-1, 2-6, 0-0
6. Higuchi lost 2-6, 4-6

Order: 3, 6, 2

Stanford 2, Texas 2

Remaining matches:

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 4-3 (Turati might have gotten a boost from her teammates, as she won the last two games handily)
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 4-5 (down a break; Emily had a few game points at 4-4 but couldn’t finish)
5. Shin leads 6-1, 2-6, 2-0

Order: 3, 6, 2

I haven’t been watching at 6, so I can’t say for sure what happened there, but when Higuchi struggles, it tends to be against taller players who are big hitters.

And Lord’s loss is just disappointing. Anna Turati is a good player, but Melissa clearly didn’t have her A game today.

Nice to see that Shin turned the page on that second set and has righted the ship in the third.

Stanford 2, Texas 2

Remaining matches:

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 5-3 (nice job to break back; she’ll serve for her match now)
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 4-6, 0-0 (sigh)
5. Shin leads 6-1, 2-6, 2-1 (on serve)

Order: 3, 6, 2

Stanford 3, Texas 2

Remaining matches:

1. Gordon wins 6-4, 6-3! VERY big win for Michaela.
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (on serve)
5. Shin tied 6-1, 2-6, 2-2

Order: 3, 6, 2, 1

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-10-2019

Stanford 3, Texas 2

Remaining matches:

4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 4-6, 3-1 (at 1-1, Emily was up 40-15, lost the next two before holding on deuce point; absolutely pivotal, and she then broke for the 3-1 lead)
5. Shin trails 6-1, 2-6, 2-5 (Poluta has won five straight games and will serve for that match now)

Order: 3, 6, 2, 1

Anybody’s match right now....

Stanford 3, Texas 3

Remaining matches:

4. Arbuthnott leads 6-4, 4-6, 5-1
5. Shin lost 6-1, 2-6, 2-6

Order: 3, 6, 2, 1, 5

Shin can’t figure it out in the third, but thankfully, Emily has been in this position before. Fingers crossed!

I can’t recall the last time we lost at both #5 and #6 singles, though. Stunning.

And Emily closes it out, 6-1 in the third!

A hard-fought 4-3 win behind a *massive* win for Gordon over one of the very best players in the country. I had that one tabbed as a probable loss, and we needed it to counteract fairly shocking losses from Shin and Higuchi.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - 2006alum - 02-10-2019

Congrats to our women for a hard-fought squeaker!

And wow, UT is like a model United Nations; 2 players on the whole team are from the US and neither of them played singles today. I realize tennis is an especially international sport, but do we just not produce enough good juniors to field top D1 teams? If there's any school you'd think would want (and could get) homegrown talent, it'd be a sports-rich state like Texas.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - Spiny_Norman - 02-10-2019

Looks like Stanford vs. Georgia in the semis. Georgia defeated Vandy 4-3. 5 of the singles matches went to 3 sets. Georgia won 4 of those 5.

What a comeback for Georgia! Their #5 was down 5-1 in the third and took it 7-5. If I were Vanderbilt’s #5 right now, I’d be crushed. To have the team win on your serve a few times and not to convert is devastating.

It means we don’t get a repeat match against Vanderbilt, and we get a rematch from last year’s NCAA quarterfinals, when we won 4-0 behind straightforward singles wins from Lord, Lampl, and Arbuthnott (the other three matches were very tight).

I’m glad we get Texas at our place. That is one tough team.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - oldalum - 02-10-2019

(CT) " when Higuchi struggles, it tends to be against taller players who are big hitters."

spot-on: her opponent was a 6'3" freshman from Serbia. The Texas coach joked afterward that she beat a Stanford player who loses about once a decade.

If Granic plays against us at Taube, that might otherwise bump the 6'3" player off the lineup, but I'm guessing the Texas coach will figure his chances for a win would be better matching the Serbian up against Higuchi again.

Dumb question, but isn’t this supposed to be an indoor tennis tournament?
