RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - TheFarm07 - 03-25-2019

I hope Tara is working her halftime coaching magic.  We need to solve the zone.

We haven't been terrible on defense, of course, we need to defend against that floating teardrop jumper, but it's our offense that is holding us back. If we had made just 3 more three-pointers (which would have taken our long range percentage to 30% -- which would still be below average), we would be holding a double digit lead right now.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Mondayis justb - Griffins78 - 03-25-2019

They’re quick and using that on both offense and defense. Able to keep pressure on the ball and contesting shots and making us rush. Need to relax.

We’re not rebounding very well and Shannon’s hands are like bricks - she can’t hold onto the ball. If not for DiJonai...

Missy Barlow is just terrible. But the other refs aren’t much better.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - d4cohn - 03-25-2019

Crowd roaring on this 14-0 run by Card.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - martyup - 03-25-2019

What a great 3rd Q.  Tara is so good.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - d4cohn - 03-25-2019

Well, that was an embarrassing sequence.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - martyup - 03-25-2019

Sloppy ending, but a sweet 16 ticket punched.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - d4cohn - 03-25-2019

But all in all, an otherwise effective performance from Card (that other than 3rd quarter, was largely devoid of style points).

Card advance to Sweet 16, and favorable matchup against Missouri State for likely ND and shot at Final Four.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - M T - 03-25-2019

I left the game thanking how nice it was the team gave us some excitement for their last game at home.

I guess we know what they’ll be working on this week — dealing with a press.   They were doing great with turnovers until the last couple of minutes

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. BYU 8pm Monday - TheFarm07 - 03-25-2019

Very curious to read Tara's postgame comments. Also would love to hear what she is saying to the players about this game.

That was a sloppy game on the offensive end except for the third quarter -- terrible three point shooting in the first half, poor FT shooting and then those turnovers one right after another, 6 straight points. I was having nightmare visions of being the top story on Sportscenter and how Stanford coughed up a nearly 20 point lead in the last 5 minutes of the game to lose

I hope we got out our bad game with this one, because we could lose to Missouri State if we play like this and then it would be a repeat of the 40 point loss if we had this performance against Notre Dame. The competition is just getting tougher, we need to play 4 high quality quarters if we want to make a deep run, not just one

Wilson's perimeter defense was excellent once again.  The Hulls sometimes struggle with screens.  And in the first half that led to BYU's guards devouring Coffee on defense.  Wilson is much stronger and bounces off screens and recovers much better.  Very happy to see she is becoming a crucial contributor for us.

Write up done at the top, but I am tired and will edit it again when rested in the morning.

Happy for the win but alarmed by the shooting.  Also eager to learn more about Missouri State.

RE: WBB: Stanford 72 BYU 63 - Viking_Guy - 03-25-2019

BC--

It's not just her defense, though.  She's one of the few players on the team, other than Williams and Carrington, who seem to be really comfortable off the dribble.  The Hull sisters tonight, cold as liquid nitrogen from outside, and with an immobile if tall center on defense, NEVER looked to drive, or, if they took two steps in, immediately retreated to the three point line.  Against the BYU zone, I watched a whole lot of three players standing still on the far side, and only two players moving on offense - the two closest to the ball.  Just ugly.

And her defense on Gonzalez was just outstanding.  She did commit the first of the spectacularly bad turnovers at the end of the game, but I also was wondering why the hell Kiana didn't retreat further into the backcourt to receive the ball - she was running away from the pass across the halfcourt stripe, under pressure.  If she actually had successfully caught it, that was a trap or a backcourt violation waiting to happen.

I think our guards just checked out when we had the 16 point lead late.

Yeah, it seemed like they didn't seriously expect BYU to go that hard for steals when the game was practically out of reach.

Fortunately that's not a hard issue to correct.

Stanford's next opponent will be the Missouri State Lady Bears. Shannon Coffee take note! More Bears to conquer!

Love it CompSci! And thanks for your summary, as always, 81! I felt like this was a variation on a lot of our games this season - each of Williams (early in the 1Q), Carrington (2Q) and Smith (second half) carried the team offensively, but otherwise no one really broke out in terms of scoring. Maya continues to struggle finishing her layups - they always seem like they just need slightly more OOMPH. She doesn't look weak either, so it has to be something about not knowing quite where she is in relation to the basket.

I was lucky enough to have second row seats and the team looked very nervous at the start - they did not have their usual confidence in their eyes, and it really showed. I was not at all surprised that we fell behind, but what I could understand was why we kept chucking up lower percentage threes in the first 10-15 seconds of a possession.  Lacie, in particular, was something like 0-8 from the arc - at some point, recognize that you need to try something different! We also seemed really slow underneath the basket - I can't remember seeing so many balls drop without a single tree in sight trying to collect them. At the end of the 1Q, they were outrebounding us and our 3PT shooting percentage was .09 - yes - 9%. Egads. We didn't ever panic, but we definitely seemed nervous and not like ourselves.

Thank goodness Carrington came to the rescue with those treys in the second quarter. That got both the crowd going and the team. And as much as I can't believe I'm saying it, I think Missy was (unintentionally) more of a force for good than for evil, because when she called that ridiculous charge on Carrington, it go the crowd in a total freaking uproar - nothing like an otherwise polite bunch of octogenarians all yelling BOOOOOO at the top of their lungs for thirty seconds straight. (Most of the fans around us were very polite grandparent types and we often found ourselves starting the cheers for lack of anyone else doing so, but even they were willing to hop up and down and start screaming when Missy would abuse her whistle!)

After that it felt like we played with more fire, and when the team came out after the half, Williams, Carrington, and Smith were all knowingly eyeing each other like "we got this" and, sure enough, they did. The different in the confidence they exuded was night and day compared to the first half.

Honestly, I was pretty discouraged by our underclassmen not named Williams (does she even count as one at this point)? Dodson wasn't doing a very good job boxing out on rebounds and, as I said, was short on her layups. Both Hulls didn't seem quite as good on defense as they usually did, and they combined for 1-11 from long range. If you take them out, our team otherwise went 11-24 (45.8%), which is well above our average 3PT shooting percentage. My friend who'd never seen our women's team this year was like, "get those Hull sisters off the floor or else stop giving them the ball!" I've liked a lot of what the Hulls have done in other games, which makes me think it must have been in part freshman nerves. That said, wow, Gonzales - I couldn't believe she was a freshman given how poised she is!

However, Wilson was a revelation. She was kept out of the first half because Missy tagged her with a ridiculous second foul early in the first quarter, but in the second half she was the primary guard on Gonzales and it was night and day and how much BYU's offense was neutralized. Just as Wilson was the one who smothered Ionescu in the PAC-12 finals, so she did with Gonzales here. I love her tenacious defense, and I think that coupled with Smith finally connecting on a few treys is what blew it open for us. As good and important as our big three were, I think Wilson is the one who got us a double digit lead through her stellar defense. (And crazy as it is, this is the first time she's not been injured during March Madness, so she's getting to play in the tournament for the first time this year).

I like the team's attitude going forward, as exemplified by Carrington during the press conference: the sky is the limit for our team - we have so much we can still improve on. We missed, what was it, like, a ton of threes (motions to Tara) - - 23 treys ("Oh wow") -- yeah, so we have so much more we can do better. On an off shooting night overall, I'll take that attitude going into our next game, and hope it improves our shooting at the line, too, which was, wow, not inspiring if the game had been down to a single possession.

All in all, an enjoyable game to see in person - close first half, enough of a lead in the second to relax and enjoy it, some fun plays from most of our starters, and a very respectable opponent. I'll take it!

Missouri State is coached by Kellie (Jolly) Harper, whom some will remember from her time as a guard on 3 Tennessee national champion teams in 1996, 1997 and 1998. In 15 years as a head coach at 3 schools, this is the first time she has coached a team past the NCAA first round. But you have to give the Bears credit. It is really tough to win at Hilton Coliseum in Ames which they did last night. They will be a tough opponent.

What was with the ref assignments? On Saturday, when I saw Missy Barlow do the first game, and Cheryl Flores do the second, I thought we'd dodged a bullet for the Monday game. Yet the three refs last night, plus the spare, were all one one of Saturday's crews.

I've never seen such a thing. Looking at the box scores for the games in Waco, none of the refs were redos last night.

It is not complicated.  Missy is a recurring bad dream.  We cannot escape her, she represents all that our basketball sub consciences fear.  Fortunately, last night she was only a mildly unpleasant dream rather than one of those "oh my God I am falling when will I hit the bottom" bad dreams.

I read somewhere that we recruited Gonzales when she was in high school. How seriously did we consider her, or, conversely, did she consider us?

From the post game, someone from the press says to Gonzales "You were talking yesterday that Stanford had recruited you a little bit".  I'm interpreting that as there was interest but "a little bit" probably means no offer.  Gonzales was the 27th ranked point guard according to HoopGurlz.  Shows you can be a very good college player even if you aren't that highly ranked.
