RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Losing doubles isn't a major shocker--more of a mild surprise. I felt we'd get it with wins on 2 and 3, and 2 was pretty close, but oh well. We've gone down this road before!

Pepperdine 1, Stanford 0

1. Gordon trails 0-3
2. Lord leads 3-0
3. Lampl leads 3-1
4. Arbuthnott leads 3-1
5. Shin leads 2-1 (up a break)
6. Higuchi leads 3-0

Surprised Gordon is struggling as much as she is so far, but you can't complain too much when you're up a break on 5 of 6 courts. That said, it is a bit surprising at how uncompetitive a lot of Lampl/Yee's matches have been at #1 doubles lately. Playing #1 doubles is always tough, because you get everyone's best shot, but still.

Pepperdine 1, Stanford 0

1. Gordon trails 2-5
2. Lord leads 5-1
3. Lampl leads 4-3 (back on serve after being up 4-1)
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-1, 0-0
5. Shin leads 5-1
6. Higuchi leads 4-1

Pepperdine 1, Stanford 0

1. Gordon trails 4-5 (on serve!)
2. Lord leads 6-1, 0-0
3. Lampl leads 5-3 (back up a break and she'll serve for it)
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-1, 0-0
5. Shin leads 6-1, 0-0
6. Higuchi leads 5-2

First sets went Arbuthnott, then Lord, then Shin.

Pepperdine 1, Stanford 0

1. Gordon trails 4-6, 0-1 (on serve)
2. Lord leads 6-1, 0-2
3. Lampl leads 6-3, 0-0
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-1, 0-0 (not updating the second set right now, but Pepperdine's Kuczer is mad about something, talking to an official and her coach)
5. Shin leads 6-1, 1-0 (on serve)
6. Higuchi leads 6-2, 0-0

Five first sets to the good!

Pepperdine 1, Stanford 0

1. Gordon trails 4-6, 2-2
2. Lord leads 6-1, 3-2 (back on serve)
3. Lampl leads 6-3, 3-0 (up a double break)
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-1, 2-2
5. Shin leads 6-1, 3-1
6. Higuchi leads 6-2, 3-0 (up just one break)

Things are going rather well at this point, but these things can turn on a dime.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - Treefence - 05-17-2019

Anybody else having trouble getting the stat feed?  I can get the live streams but the link to the stats doesn't load properly.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Mine is working fine now, but I was having trouble earlier, and refreshing it didn't help. Instead, I had to close the window and click the link again.  Here it is, if it helps: http://ncaachampstennis.smtinternetservices.com/srd/?su-ca-w_vs_pepp-ca-w

Pepperdine 1, Stanford 0

1. Gordon trails 4-6, 5-2
2. Lord leads 6-1, 5-3
3. Lampl leads 6-3, 3-2 (up a break)
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-1, 4-3
5. Shin leads 6-1, 5-1
6. Higuchi leads 6-2, 5-0

Pepperdine has to stop the bleeding on 2, 3, 5, and 6 or this one will be over soon. Absolutely everything is going Stanford's way right now. Let's hope we keep our collective foot on the gas and don't let up--the Waves are too good to let back in this match.

Gordon has really settled in. If she can keep this up, she'll take the second set before we clinch the match (she'll serve for the set shortly). Note: Pepperdine's Twitter account says Failla is leading that set 3-2 rather than Lampl leading it, so there may be a scoreboard issue (our Twitter account agrees with the scoreboard). I haven't followed that match closely enough to know if and when there was a scoring error. EDIT: Pepperdine's Twitter account changed its mind and agrees with the scoreboard now.

Awesome, that works.

2. Lord leads 6-1, 5-2
3. Lampl leads 6-3, 3-2 (up a break)
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-1, 4-2

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Stanford 3, Pepperdine 1

1. Gordon tied 4-6, 6-2, 0-0
2. Lord wins 6-1, 6-3
3. Lampl leads 6-3, 4-2
4. Arbuthnott leads 6-1, 4-3
5. Shin wins 6-1, 6-1
6. Higuchi leads 6-2, 6-0

Shin the first to book a win, followed shortly by Lord and Higuchi (the scoreboards changed simultaneously for me, so I can't say for sure who won first between those two).

(Note: If the match is clinched before the 3rd set gets going on #1, UTR will treat that match like a narrow Gordon win because she won 10 games to Lahey's 8.)

Lampl up a break at 4-3 in the second, while Arbuthnott is up a break at 5-4 and will serve for her match after the changeover.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - qwerty49 - 05-17-2019

Arbuthnott needs to hold serve for the match.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - terry - 05-17-2019

Nice to see a score at #6 of the kind we've come to expect from Higuchi.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Arbuthnott holds on deuce point, and that's that! A 6-1, 6-4 win completes a dominant singles performance from Stanford.

At the time she clinched, Gordon had gone down a break at 0-2 in the third set, while Pepperdine's Failla had drawn level with Lampl in the second set and was a point away from taking a 5-4 lead in that set. If Gordon ends up losing, Failla forces a third set, and Arbuthnott gets taken to a third? That's a scarier situation.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - Spiny_Norman - 05-17-2019

Lele Forood is up there among the all time great coaches in Stanford history. Her teams always seem to raise their games when the stakes are the biggest. That was a great effort against a team that had won 2 straight vs. Stanford during the regular season.

Next up - North Carolina, part 3. Stanford has eliminated the Tar Heels each of the past 2 seasons.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - Canalejas - 05-17-2019

Do we have any cheering interests in the other two quarterfinals?

Georgia vs Vanderbilt
Duke vs South Carolina

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Recall that Emma Higuchi was a big underdog today, too. Iamachkine had a 0.56 UTR advantage, and Higuchi just crushed her.

If Shin and Higuchi are rolling, folks, then this is a different ballgame. I've been steeling myself against the possibility that UNC might be just a bit better than we are or that Georgia could prove too tough at key spots. But if we can count on wins at 5 and 6?  I like our chances.

So both Stanford and UNC win 4-1 after dropping the doubles point and turning on the gas in singles. With the UTRs the way they are right now (not taking into account today's matches), every damn match is a toss-up. I can't get over that. I'm sure that's happened before, but it didn't last year when I saw UTR used more frequently by tennis bloggers at NCAAs.

Here it is, match by match:

1. #24 Gordon (14-5 in dual matches) vs. #5 Makenna Jones (18-5) (Gordon by 0.04)
2. #26 Lord (19-4) vs. #7 Alexa Graham (24-2) (even)
3. #66 Lampl (21-0) vs. #20 Sara Daavettila (19-5) (Daavettila by 0.02)
4. #44 Arbuthnott (20-2) vs. #46 Cameron Morra (20-2) (Morra by 0.07)
5. #108 Shin (17-3) vs. Jessie Aney (23-4) (Shin by 0.01)
6. #107 Higuchi (14-4) vs. Alle Sanford (14-6) (Sanford by 0.05)

In last year's Round of 16, UNC won the doubles point, but then Lord beat Sanford 6-4, 6-1 (gosh, Sanford has come down in the world--she was ranked #26 then and playing #2 singles for the top national seed), Higuchi beat Chloe Oullet-Pizer 6-1, 6-4 (who is still on the team, but is now the first off the bench rather than the #6), Arbuthnott beat Graham 6-3, 6-1, and Shin clinched it with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Aney.

At the time the match was clinched, Gordon had lost the first set to Makenna Jones in a tiebreaker but was up a break in the second, but Daavettila led Lampl 6-4, 5-2 and Lampl was saved from a loss only by Shin's timely clincher.

Earlier this year, Jones beat Gordon in group play at the USTA Blizzard Wild Card Challenge, but it was as tight a match as could be. They split the first two sets by 7-5 scores, and then Jones won a match tiebreaker for the third set, 13-11. At ITA All-Americans, Gordon lost a disappointing match to Graham, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3. The only other Stanford-UNC match I see is Yee losing to Aney in three sets at a fall tournament.

Slam.tennis favors UNC slightly, calling them a 60% favorite to win, which seems fair enough. Both teams have only lost once, and in each case it was a 4-3 loss to Georgia at Indoor Nationals. The individual UTRs are darn near identical, and the UTR Power 6 favors UNC but just barely (68.49 to 68.39). But UNC is the better doubles team, so on paper, I'd absolutely agree that UNC should be slightly favored.

In doubles tomorrow, I think Lampl/Yee lose again, and I think Lord/Madurawe win on 3, so it all comes down to that match on #2.  Here are the doubles matchups:

1. #19 Lampl/Yee (11-8 in duals) vs. #2 Aney/Graham (23-2)
2. #29 Arbuthnott/Gordon (16-3) vs. #12 Jones/Morra (13-3)
3. #57 Lord/Madurawe (17-5) vs. Daavettila/Sanford (10-5)

I have no idea how this goes. I am very nervous about this match. I know I'm nervous about every match, but I'm extra nervous about this one.

Georgia vs Vanderbilt
Duke vs South Carolina

Vanderbilt over Georgia; South Carolina over Duke.  We should cheer especially hard for Vanderbilt, as we match up the worst with Georgia of any of the remaining teams. (And, you know, we beat them 6-1 this season already. But caveat emptor: we lost to them 7-0 in the regular season last year before winning the NCAA title match 4-3.)

Here's how we match up against each team (again, just as a hypothetical exercise, not a statement of any confidence in beating North Carolina, as the woofing gods should know by now I am exceedingly nervous about that match and have no confidence at all in predicting any outcome):

Georgia: We're a slight favorite at #2, while Georgia is a big favorite on #6, and slight/moderate favorites at #1, #4, and #5. Lampl's match at #3 would be a toss-up.

Vanderbilt: Stanford is a big favorite at #4, a moderate favorite at #3 and #5, and a slight favorite at #1, while Vanderbilt is a slight favorite at #6. The match at #2 (Lord-Contreras again) would be a toss-up.

South Carolina: Stanford would be a moderate favorite at #6 and a slight favorite at #3; the matches at #1, #2, #4, and #5 would be toss-ups.

Duke: Stanford is a moderate favorite at #4, while Duke is a big favorite at #6 and a moderate favorite at #5. The matches at #1, #2, and #3 would be toss-ups.

Note, of course, that a lot of those matchup issues are due to trailing big at #6. But if we're rolling out Peak NCAA Higuchi rather than Scuffling Regular Season Higuchi? Different story.

FYI, Georgia has already beaten Vanderbilt twice this year, 4-3 at National Indoors and then 4-1 (indoors again) at home in Athens.

According to UTR, Georgia is a very big favorite at #4 (0.87), and a moderate favorite at #1, #3, #5, and #6, while Vanderbilt is a slight favorite at #2. Vanderbilt is generally a better doubles team than Georgia, so if Vanderbilt doesn't take the doubles point, I don't see them winning four singles matches. It's early, but so far, Vanderbilt is up a break at #1 and #3, and on serve at #2.

She's unbelievable, and you're absolutely right. You can't talk about the great coaches in University history without mentioning her name. From recruiting, to developing players, to sending them to the pros, to raising the level of play in key moments and at NCAAs, to being a master of the schedule so you've threaded the needle between playing just enough top teams to get your seeding where you need it to be, but not so many that your players aren't coming into NCAAs fresh--she's been at the top of the sport for a while. Long may she reign.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Vanderbilt takes the doubles point. So far in singles, Vanderbilt is up a break on #2, #4, and #6, and they're down a break on #1, #3, and #5.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Vanderbilt is up 3-2, with the remaining matches into third sets.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - BobK - 05-17-2019

Georgia up 5-1 3rd set
I think the other match is 1-1 early in the 3rd set. I’m watching but they aren’t commenting on the other match

Now 3-3 and 2-1 3rd set in the deciding match

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-17-2019

Georgia takes them both for the 4-3 win. Last quarter of the day on now, and Duke just took the doubles point.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - BobK - 05-18-2019

Dook won

So we play at 11 correct. Might be on tv at 1 when it starts on the tennis channel

No I think they're going to show a men's semi. They won't put us on the courts where the TV cameras are set up.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - BobK - 05-18-2019

Thanks old alum.

If anyone had a link please add

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - ColoradoTree - 05-18-2019

Correct, we're at 11 Pacific, and the team is warming up now.

Here's the link to live stats: http://ncaachampstennis.smtinternetservices.com/srd/?stan-ca-w_vs_unc-nc-w

And here's the link to video (we're on Courts 7-12, so just scroll through to the right for the court you want to watch): https://www.ustanationalcampus.com/en/home/watch.html

UNC has to have a special motivation today--we've taken them out of the tournament the last two years. Last year, they were the #2 seed (and #1 team in the country), and we beat them in the Round of 16. The year before, UNC was again the #2 seed, and we beat them as the #7 in the quarterfinals.

This year, they're the #2 seed again. And they're playing us again

I don't have a lot of confidence in how this match goes, but I'm certainly not picking against Stanford. Bobby at CTN thinks Stanford wins 4-2 (https://www.collegetennistoday.com/item/1848-ncaa-women-s-semifinals-preview.html) behind the doubles point and singles wins from Arbuthnott, Shin, and Higuchi. I'll pick Stanford to win 4-3, with UNC winning the doubles point, and Stanford getting singles wins from Lord, Arbuthnott, Shin, and Gordon with the clincher in a tough third set. I love that we got vintage Higuchi in the last match, but Alle Sanford is 5'11" and a big hitter, and that's Higuchi kryptonite. I hate picking Lampl to fall short, too--it just feels so wrong--but I think Daavettila will take advantage of Lampl's inconsistent serve just enough today.

RE: Women's Tennis: Team Finals - oldalum - 05-18-2019

I think all the pressure's on UNC to climb the mountain they haven't been able to climb before.
My hoped-for path to our victory includes singles wins from Lord, Arbuthnott, and Shin; we then need to pick up one point from any of doubles/Gordon/Lampl/Higuchi. I'm feeling good about it.  (but not good enough to watch live -- I can't take it!) :)
