RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - Hulk01 - 05-26-2019

According to GolfStat,
Conrad may replace Snyder, Golf Stat's #33 collegian,
with Nate Menon.
I'm betting against it,l
despite Snyder's +18 performance.

Conrad likely was just preserving that option last night.

He did it, hope it was the right move.  Menon +2 after 5 holes following a double.  Daluet is struggling, but as stand, his score will be dropped, team now +4 overall.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - oldalum - 05-26-2019

After the front 9, Menon is +5 and Daluet +8. But no way to know how Snyder would have done.
Salinda -4 on the first 5 holes is keeping us in the same relative position to the teams right behind us.

We are gradually losing ground.  Salinda now just Even, Wu +1 and Shimp +2.  Daluet has now made a few birdies dropping to 6 over and Menon is now 5 over, so 8 over on the day.  Still tied for 2, but gap between us and 8 has shrunk a bit.  Need some birdies on the last few holes.

With just 1 hole each left to be played by Salinda and Shimp we are about to end with one of the 4 worst rounds among the top 15 and tied for 3rd with only a 7 stroke cushion over #8. We have to play better the next round. We should also simply declare OSU the stroke champion and move on. The chance of anyone making up 23 strokes on OSU in the final round is, shall we say, very unlikely. The top 8 contain 6 of the top ten ranked teams, but it is more like Oklahoma State and the 7 Dwarfs. Hopefully the final round will result in us playing better and making match play. Beating OSU in any format will remain a significant challenge. I think we need Snyder back for the final round.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - BostonCard - 05-26-2019

Ugh, we are +11 for the day and dropped to fourth.  Still a decent cushion to eighth place, but not the sort of day you can afford more than once.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - oldalum - 05-26-2019

Got to hand it to 4th-seeded Vandy: after a terrible first round of +19, they got themselves back into it by improving 19 strokes yesterday to shoot even par, and are -7 so far today and in second place. They've dropped so far that the absolute value of their score to par is the same as the absolute value of OSU's!

We are back up to a tie for 2nd place with Texas. So it looks like we will be fine regarding our positioning heading into tomorrow. Oklahoma State continues to lap the field, and just dominate the competition.

Pac-12, outside of Stanford of course, is really having a tournament to forget. #2 seeded Arizona State is in deep trouble just to make the three round cut. Cal and SC also battling just to make the Top 15 (let alone Top 8 for match play). SC is only one shot off Top 15 pace, and just starting their round.

Meanwhile, it is a banner tournament for the Big 12 so far.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - Hulk01 - 05-26-2019

We had to start our round at 3:50 am Stanford time .
I assume we're paired with Oklahoma State and Texas tomorrow,
and will be the last groups out.

Note: Wasn't aware when I mentioned him yesterday:
20-21 incoming golf commit Michael Thornbjornsen
won the US Junior Amateur last summer,
beating Akshay Bhatia.
Anyone who can play with that guy--
so good he's skipping college to turn pro--
is a nice addition to the Stanford team.

And Karl Vilips arrives in September.
Right now, Vilip is even better that MT, and sometimes goes absurdly low.
This summer, Vilips carded a 62 or 63 in a major junior event.

Cal and SC just make the cut, Cal after posting a +18 to drop 7 slots; SC climbed 8 after going four over.  #2 ranked ASU was on the wrong side of the cut line, missing by a single stroke.  They are 7 and 8 strokes, respectively from the #8 team.  On the flip side, we have a 16 stroke cushion on #9, so we can withstand another bad round, though getting back into form would be preferable.

We not only had to start play at 3:50 in the morning Stanford time,
but we were awakened at midnight for a tornado warning.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - winflop - 05-27-2019

Snyder is once again not in the lineup. At one of the home events this spring, someone made a comment to me that alluded to Snyder being out there more for himself this year than the team - something along the lines of "if he makes this putt, he's doing it more for him than for the team." He could be injured, not playing well, and/or some kind of attitude issue. I'll check with my people :)

One other note about Snyder. He was assessed a one shot penalty for slow play on Saturday.

LSU’s Nathan Jeansonne and South Carolina’s Ryan Hall each received three-shot penalties for missing three of the four checkpoints in Friday’s opening round. South Carolina subsequently missed the cut yesterday by 2 shots.

Tell us about that aspect of the college game.  I wasn't aware that they had to meet time limits on their play.  It makes sense.  How does it work?  How much faster than "normal" must they play?  Is the time allocation generous?

Quote:For much of the season, pace of play is loosely enforced in college golf. There are no checkpoints. There is no timing. No penalties are handed out.  But when the postseason begins, things are different. Penalties are handed out after the second missed checkpoint.

Based on the difficulty of the course, the organizing committee determines a pace of play. At the NCAA tournament, they set 4 checkpoints for elapsed time from the start of the round. The overall pace of play for Blessings is set at 5 hours, 5 minutes, the longest ever which factors in the challenges on the course as well as the distance between holes. I think that each group also has a monitor or rules official that times the players as they play each shot. A player should not take longer than 45 seconds.

The article that I read indicated that pace of play picked up significantly yesterday after the slow play penalties had been imposed.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - martyup - 05-27-2019

Thanks for the explanation. Damn, that wouldn't work for me.  It takes me way more than 45 seconds to find my balls in the weeds.

Ooh that's gotta hurt. Plus the 3 shot penalty took Ryan Hall out of the apparent playoff today for continuing play as an individual.

But a few questions:

Are they informed at each checkpoint that they missed the deadline?

How did the third player in their group escape being penalized? Was there some determination that he was not responsible for the group's slow play? How?

Also, is the 1-shot penalty added to their score on that hole?

Thanks.

RE: NCAA Championship - men's golf - Phogge - 05-27-2019

Marty there are bad things in the weeds. Snakes, thistle, poison oak. Just play like this old man and drop so you won’t need anti-venom and calamine lotion.

The players should be informed at the time of the assessment. But we have seen cases on the PGA Tour where players were not informed until after they finished play that they had been penalized for slow play. But PGA Tour players are warned when they are falling behind. I don't know if the NCAA players were similarly warned.

I believe that each group has a monitor or rules official who puts players on the clock when the group falls behind. He or she determined that the 3rd player in the group was not at fault for the slow play so no penalty for them.

Btw, looks like David Snyder returns to the lineup today.

Yep, unfortunately +2 after two holes (double bogey on 2).

Vanderbilt's just passed us with a -8 after completing holes 4-6. But what matters is our distance from the cut line, which is still 16 strokes.

There are four checkpoints during each round - after 5/9/14/18. Two things are measured:
- Time of completion of the hole
- Time since the previous group finished the hole

Based on actual tee time, there will be a time on the clock by which they need to have completed a hole. That can vary by course - for NCAA regionals I believe it was 4h40m.

If you miss your time on the clock AND are more than 15 minutes behind the group in front of you, then you are deemed to have missed the checkpoint. First miss is a warning, second miss is one stroke, third is two strokes, and four is DQ. You can appeal the penalties after completion of the round. Typical reasons for appeal are waiting for a rules official or looking for a potentially lost ball. What is not OK is to have to go back to the tee because you didn't hit a provisional ball. Also, when a group misses a checkpoint, a rules official starts following the group and timing each player.

Snyder is a notoriously slow player so I'm not surprised he got penalized.
