Giants currently have the eighth worst record in baseball at 39-47, which projects to 73-89.  They've scored 40 runs in the last 4 games, getting their first three game sweep of the season.  They're 17-14 for their last 31 games, a 55% win rate.  They have 76 games left.  If they keep up that pace, they'll finish 80-82.

The new guys are doing pretty well.  Dickerson, Pillar, Solano and that Slater guy from down the peninsula, batting .500 with four extra base hits of his five hits.  Team BA finally over .230.

The question is what will Farhan do?  Judicious trades to bring in young talent while keeping competitive?  Fire sale?  Just the relievers?  Nothing?

RE: The Giants - Phogge - 07-04-2019

Plenty of shortstops in the international signings. Consensus is that the best young athletes play short and pitch. Hope they signed the Joe Nuxhall of Venezuela.

The Yankees have had success with the international draft... witness Gary Sanchez. They have been watching this kid since he was 13. Built like a brick *&$#+%$#@. They are not afraid to spend.

Unless I could get somebody like Verdugo I would keep and resign Will Smith. They should insist on quality for Bum, a regular outfielder and two prospects in the 3-7 range of an organization’s stockpile. Otherwise keep him. Belt is hot... time to unload. Also I think the Panik concussion has made a .235 hitter out of a .280 hitter. I’d dump him and play Solano while waiting for youth to emerge at Richmond or San Jose.

Agree with you Phogge, especially about Panik.  I don't think Crawford has any trade value either, but he looks to have maybe 1-2 years left at best, got old quickly.

lex24 - lex24 - 07-04-2019

They have to build bottom up. Farhan is doing that. MadBum is one of my all time favorite Giants. No 2 pitcher. Behind Juan. Yet I’d trade him. His value should be fairly high right now. He’s pitching very well and his “stuff” has gotten better. And, of course, he has that post season record.

Smith also should bring value. And it’s somewhat of a waste to have a top flight closer on a lower division team.

I wonder about Belt. He could have some value. High OBP. Good glove. And his power plays outside of Oracle.

Farhan is making a believer out of me. One thing is certain, he’s not going to sit around and watch a bunch of old vets play.

Speaking of old vets. It’s painful to watch Buster hit. A shell of a once great hitter. But he’s still a terrific defensive catcher. He’s signed through ‘22. At present, he has little value if he’s playing first base. Why do I raise this, Joey Bart. I’d give him a first baseman’s glove right now. Get him out of the squat. Aramis Garcia is a decent catching prospect. He can back up and perhaps take over for Buster.

The Giants don’t win three Championships with Buster playing anywhere but catcher. But all those games have caught up with him. I don’t want to see that happen to Bart.

RE: The Giants - BobK - 07-04-2019

Bum has to be traded He’s a free agent and of the Giants don’t make the playoffs Bering he’s gone anyway.
Must keep Smith

Belt goodbye. But I’be been hoping for years. Play Austin at 1B

Hate to bring this up but the Giants are 6-6 games out of the play off positions. Yes hard to believe they can make but that’s close. And yes many teams are that close

Plus the Giants are once again fun to watch

RE: The Giants - OutsiderFan - 07-05-2019

First of all, you don't trade young prospects for veteran assets unless you are making a move to win a championship.  So any idea that the Giants should trade for veteran players to bolster their roster for a Wild Card push this year would be insane. If they get younger prospects that catalyze improvement, that's fine.

Bumgarner and Smith are both Free Agents after this season.  If the Giants want them and they want the Giants, they can both be re-signed and and get prospects for a couple 2-3 month rentals. It would be insane not to trade them even if the Giants are sniffing Wild Card contention.

I still want Miguel Andujar from the Yankees as my top trade asset. A 24 YO 3rd baseman on IL with torn Labrum in shoulder this year, with four years until he's eligible for Free Agency. Slashed .297/27/97 with a .855 OPS in his one year (2018) as a starter.  The Yankees have a strong pen, but really need a starting Pitcher.

The Red Sox, Nationals, and Cardinals need bullpen help badly, and I'm guessing most other contenders do too, so Smith should fetch some intriguing prospects.

Not just Smith, but Dyson, Moronta and Watson are having terrific seasons as relievers.  Even Melancon is doing okay - though his contract makes him untradeable on a dollar-for dollar basis.  And Trevor Gott is 5-0.

I would only make trades for SIGNIFICANT value; e.g., a front line starter for Bum or Smith.  I'd trade to get rid of Crawford, Panik and yes, Posey.  Belt has a .799 OPS, about average for a first baseman, but he's .866 away from home and .714 at home.  I'd trade his contract.

RE: The Giants - BobK - 07-05-2019

Had no idea Smith was a free agent even though I printed out the salary list at the start of the season. Guess it didn’t matter then. Sign Smith now 3 years $30M.

Trade Belt try to get some of his salary to go with him.

Have to trade Bum. We shall see how good our GM really is.

RE: The Giants - Phogge - 07-05-2019

Mick is correct. Got to have value or don’t trade the Big 2, especially Smith. Stu Miller, Moffit, Jerry Johnson, Nenn, Beck et al were never PERFECT. Moronta has great stuff but doesn’t have a closers mind set. Plus Smith has had his Tommy John.

RE: The Giants - BobK - 07-05-2019

Just don’t trade George Foster for Frank Duffy. Stanford connection or not

RE: The Giants - Phogge - 07-05-2019

Bobbbbbbbbbbbbb could you please not bring up Duffy anymore? LOL.

RE: The Giants - Goose - 07-06-2019

I can't figure out what the Giants see in Slater Austin. He is hitting below the Mendoza line, and, worse still, it seems the only pitches he can hit are fastballs right down the middle. Anything else, no chance. Naturally, teams know this and give him nothing he can hit. He is 26 years old. If he hasn't figured this out yet, he isn't going to.

You mean Tyler Austin?  Slater Austin isn’t a player, and Austin Slater, a Stanford guy, is playing pretty well.

Yes, sorry about that. Both players pinch hit last night. Austin Slater got a much better result, but that is just one AB for both of them. Maybe it is my Stanford bias, but when I look at the more "long term" results, it appears to me that Tyler Austin just doesn't have the ability to hit at the major league level. Austin Slater may not either, but his career batting average is at least a respectable 272, while Tyler Austin is 221. Neither has a lot of career ABs, but Tyler Austin has also shown an inability to hit right handed pitching. He also seems to be unable to hit anything that is not a fastball down the middle. He has good power when he hits it, but he just doesn't hit it that often. Austin Slater has not shown such a defect. That says to me that Tyler Austin has a lot further to go before he could even hope to remain in the majors.

Given where the Giants are in their "rebuild" process, trying other players who at least may be potential major league quality in Tyler Austin's roster spot seems preferable to a guy hitting 188. He is apparently not considered a good enough outfielder to play left field regularly. He can't be an every-day first baseman because he can't hit right handed pitching. So until one of these constraints goes away, I don't see why the Giants don't bring up somebody else and see what they can do.
