Posey is a much better than average HoF catching candidate at the moment (at least statistically).

RE: OT: Baseball trivia - Phogge - 07-31-2019

I think he gets in but I wouldn't vote for him.

Poor Bobbbbb, he's still touting Nini Tornay.

I'd vote for Posey.  The non-candidate that intrigues me is Bill Freehan.  Good, not great numbers. 200 HRs, only behind Berra and Bill Dickey for AL catchers.  Only led the league in getting HBP three times. But he was an 11-time All-Star, five time gold glove winner, finished in top 7 in MVP voting three times.  Held the career fielding percentage record, total chances and total putout records for catchers until 2002.  Isn't that the definition of a Hall of Famer?  Someone who is the best at their position while they were in the big leagues?

Other non-Hall of Famers and their All-star appearances:

Steve Garvey (10)
Elston Howard (9)
Fred Lynn (9)
Davey Concepcion (9)
Frank McCormick (9 -- mostly WWII)

Mick, those guys were very good players, not HOFers. I remember Freehan behind the plate. Close call.

RE: OT: Baseball trivia - BobK - 08-01-2019

Elston Howard would top my list of Mick’s

Phogge I cried when the Seals traded Ray Ortig

RE: OT: Baseball trivia - Phogge - 08-01-2019

Howard is another of those “close” guys. MVP, three times over .300, versitle and a winner. But not great.

Funny, looking at the baseball register Mission High SF grads like Triandos and Judnich have Mission High of Fremont listed on their bios. I called attention through an email last year and they replied but did nothing.

As for Orteig big mistake by the Seals. Tornay was a worst hitter than you were. The Angels had the Tappe brothers and Vinnie Smith was in Sacramento but Orteig was the best catcher who never made it to MLB.

Fred Lynn's stats were pretty close to Jim Rice's.  Rice had one more great year, Lynn had four subpar years (instead of Rice's three) at the end of his career.

And of course he was a USC grad.  So he shouldn't be in anyway...:D

If you support Freehan, then how do you feel about Yadier Molina? He has 9 All-Star games, 9 Golden Gloves, leads all active catchers in caught-stealing pct., is often considered the best defensive catcher of his generation, and also can hit - five .300 seasons, a career .282 average, and 1,918 career hits.

I consider him a first ballot hall of famer.

ROY. MVP. First NL catcher to win Batting title since Ernie Lombardi. Face of a three time WC champion. 4 Silver Sluggers. Gold Glove. 6 time All-Star.

I think you forget how good he was. Catching has destroyed his bat – don’t know if it will come back. He’s an elite catcher defensively now. Far from it at the plate. (I find it almost painful to watch him hit now) But he is the best catcher of his generation and the mainstay of a three-time champion. He is a Hall of Famer

Molina should make the HOF. He’s won some of those GG’s on rep. But he still has been an elite catcher for a decade.
