“So we are in process to play our best football. We haven’t seen it, haven’t shown it on game day. There’s so much more on this football team, and we’ve got to get it out of us. It starts with me, finding a way to get us to play better.
There are times where we play really, really well, and there are times where we're a little sloppy. Not going to blame it on anything other than our execution...
So I'm not going to hit the panic button. I don't have a panic button. There's no panic button. There is focusing on what we need to focus on, make sure we have guys in position to do their jobs, make sure we have the right guys in there to do those jobs.
Trust the character of this football team, trust our work ethic, trust our resilience.”
I don’t see how one interprets this as throwing the players under the bus.
I will repeat, for clarity, “There’s so much more on this football team, and we’ve got to get it out of us. It starts with me, finding a way to get us to play better.”

"We are in a process to play our best football"?!? In today's college football, a team needs to be firing on all cylinders from the get go.
Sadly, it's too late for this season.
Reading some of the other posts, we've resolved ourselves to a "if we beat the Bears, all is okay" mentality. Where's a sense of urgency? Welcome back to mediocrity at best. No wonder we've no Skovs, DeCastros, Murphys, Lucks or Ertzes on this team. Orange slices for all, right?

So apparently Costello injured his right thumb on the first drive against Oregon. KJ said it was not an excuse and he simply had to be a gamer and be there for his team.
But at what point did it hurt the team? He was obviously not effective throwing the ball.
Are Mills and West simply in no position to back him up?

That's the first quote I've seen or heard in THREE WEEKS where he has put any responsibility on his shoulders or his staff's. Also, it should have been the FIRST thing he said. Instead, it's buried at the end of a post-game statement.
He should be leading with something like "Today's loss is on the entire program, from me down to the execution on the field." By the time you get to the end of the statement, it's too late.
I pay more attention to the radio post-game interviews than the post-game and Tuesday press conferences which aren't broadcast. I'll try to do more of the latter, but I'm sticking by my statement.

First the complaint is that he didn't take responsibility, and once it was pointed out that he did, in fact, call himself out, the complaint is that he is not self-flagellating hard enough.

This was my biggest wonder during the game.
Watching the game in the stadium I had no idea about his thumb but it was obvious something was wrong. I thought that maybe he wasn't fully healed from his head hit. After the first series in the 3rd quarter ended in another punt, my group agreed that we would sit KJ. Mills might not have been better, but he wouldn't have been much worse.
But we didn't expect it to happen, since the only example we could think of Coach Shaw benching a starter for non-performance in the past 7 years was Hogan for Nunes.

What about 2 years ago, when Shaw sat Chryst and installed KJ as QB?

We were specifically thinking about benching a player in the middle of a game, like Nick Saban famously replacing Jalen Hurts for Tua in the middle of the national championship game.
Chryst himself took over from Burns, but like KJ the decision was made before the game started.

The irony, of course, is that that was the single most critical substitution Shaw has made during his entire tenure as head coach. The trajectory of that season, and in some sense our post-Luck success, turned almost on a dime with that move.
Maybe he should try mixing things up more often...

It took him THREE WEEKS to say anything about him and his staff being part of the problem, and he did it at the end of a statement. He further dug a hole when he (unbelievably) claimed that the difference in these three games is execution on a handful of plays in each game. A statement like that clearly blames the players, not the coaches.
So no, I'm not letting him off the hook for such a small concession. He and his staff are highly-paid professionals. With rare exception it is always their responsibility first and foremost.

Some quotes from the head coach after the loss:
"I have a feeling I didn't do a very good job for our team...never got comfortable with what we needed to do on defense. Our secondary vs their receivers. It was bothering me going into the game and as it unfolded, those matchups were a big difference."
They have a really good team. I think the responsibility for us not playing well really starts with me. You know, we obviously didn't go out there and they did do some things that we weren't prepared for, but you always expect that -- a couple bunch passes that [they] ran and some other people that we had to make adjustment to at halftime.
But I thought the players prepared well for this game, and I think that they just got out-performed. It wasn't like we just didn't cover a guy. I mean, we tried to cover No. 8. He caught the ball, made a big play. We were in three-deep zone when No. 5 catches a ball and runs 50 yards, 60 yards for a touchdown, guy doesn't play the deep third properly. So you know, those responsibilities start with me, our staff and all the coaches who try to get these guys ready, and when we don't play well, I feel like that's a reflection on the job that we did, the job that I did."
"So I mean, this game could have been a little different if we'd have finished things a little better. But we didn't play well enough on defense to win because if you can't get off the field on third down you're going to have a hard time when you're playing against a good team.
But there was nothing going through my head except what can I do to help our team play better the next play, and we just kept not being able to finish things the way we wanted to. I feel like it's my responsibility that those things didn't happen properly."

As much as I'd like for it to happen, Nick Saban is not going to coach at Stanford.

Yeah not likely. But Shaw could learn a lot from him about leading with his own accountability. This is not the first time this has happened, but it's the worst I can remember. Probably because he's never lost 3 in a row before and certainly not by these kinds of margins even two in a row that I can recall.

Go back and reread the transcript (link is above). It was in the first third of his statement, and it was the first thing mentioned in terms of assigning responsibility.
