I am sure this has been shared before, but since his absence is raised in this thread, I thought it might be informative for some readers to have more background on the subject. I am certain it did not help that Turley was promoted to an athletics-wide Director position that effectively moved him outside of Shaw's direct influence. There are several names listed on Shaw's staff with the titles of "Sports Performance" coaches (Perez, Farniok, Contorno). Perez and Farniok are in their first years, so they probably have had little positive or negative effect on the program, while Contorno is in her third year and has several side gigs in men's volleyball and women's lightweight rowing. However you cut it, the model is not working for Stanford football. This article underscores clearly the impact Turley had on reducing injuries on the football team; and whatever decisions were made to move him away from his previous 100% dedication to football have really hurt the team. Shaw should insist that Muir gives him his own dedicated S&C director. https://www.stanforddaily.com/2019/04/17/stanford-fires-award-winning-sports-performance-director/
So, I did remember correctly. Turley was fired for cause and it was not by the football program.
Correct. The reason was never divulged. Speculation indicates that he did something in opposition to the university's standards of conduct. But that is only speculation. And I was unable to figure out where he is currently working (if at all). Clearly, the S&C program has been in decline for several years, so his effect on the program had already diminished through his move to the Director position for all athletics. Maybe the whole thing was political (i.e., Turley wanted to move to bigger things and couldn't achieve them in the limited framework of Stanford football, or maybe he and Shaw were not in perfect harmony -- there are a host of possible reasons).
It was no secret that Harbaugh had been trying to poach him to Michigan (which is partly what prompted his promotion to head of the S&C for the entire AD). Had Turley and Shaw not seen eye to eye, I think Turley could have elected to rejoin Harbaugh at Michigan and been part of their EUTM. That he did not accept means that either Stanford offered him so much money that even with some friction with Shaw he elected to stay, or that he had some unstated friction with Harbaugh or that he and Shaw actually got along fine.

Thanks for this insight. I was unaware that Harbaugh had been trying to poach him. However, retaining Turley with such a promotion certainly didn't help the S&C pogram: the increased distance from day-to-day football operations certainly had a negative impact.

I’ll read between the lines on this one; Turkey had an offer from Harbaugh and went to Stanford and asked if it could be beaten. The only way to keep him was to offer him the head S&C job, so the choice was between him moving up within Stanford or heading to Michigan.

Most certainly. It would be great to have someone in charge of overall S&C, then put the money into hiring the best S&C coaches for each sport (or sports for those that don't require a full-time coach). Someone whose role it is just to make sure the S&C coaches have what they need, share information, etc. Doesn't have to be the highest-paid in the department.
