Williams anchored our DL against the run. We're boned without him.
I agree. Don't know how this can be viewed as anything but very bad news for 2020 (and not a great reflection on the program).
Agreed +1,000 Teejers. A fifth year starter at a position of need is leaving after a down year. Very bad look.

What does it matter. Stanford needs playmakers. Agreed he was adequate but to win you have to be more than that. Recruiting DL has "boned" Stanford, losing Michael has not.

I'd argue being an average Stanford football player is an accomplishment about which most can only dream. Just say'n.

It seems like people in the past have grad transferred because they want to maximize any chance of playing in the NFL and they'd lost their starting job to someone younger.
DWP seems like a better fit for a 3-4 front than Williams. I could imagine Williams hopes a team running a 4-3 would give him a better chance to play and to shine, and thus, give him a better chance at the NFL.
I really enjoyed watching Williams play and I liked his story and I hope that, in the end, he chooses to stay.
Stanford does a great job of putting people in the NFL. NFL teams are aware of what kind of players Stanford produces and I'd think even the #2 DT would get a great opportunity after being 5 years at Stanford.
I was watching the Texans game last weekend and the announcers were raving about Justin Reid and saying how he is the person reading the formations and getting the defense lined up. He's in his second year!

I will congratulate him on his next step in his 40-year plan.
Not sure anyone disagrees with your "pivot" take. We're not losing sleep over whether he stays or goes; we're losing sleep over why someone who wants to play another year of football - and has received significant PT at Stanford - wants to go somewhere else for his last year of eligibility.
That's a legit concern, imo, and an alarming one.

Wow, have to agree with Teejers. A first. Time for a Woodward/Bernstein investigation. RJ will never do it.

Right, but my point is there very much could be an academic aspect, and that should take priority over football.

Agree. As a psychology major, perhaps he's looking to study at and get an advanced degree from the best school for psychology in the country. Wonder what that school is. . . .

Problem is that I don't think I've ever seen a player co-term in psychology. It might be hard to get into.

So Stanford football players don't have the same academic capabilities as their non-athletic peers?

Perhaps this is the wrong interpretation of this message,
but my read on this tweet is that Mike might not be playing
a fifth year.
