Unclear. Blake’s absence is a surprise, too. Perhaps late scratches, since there were some unexpected byes in the first round? Hopefully something minor!
FYI, Choy and Higuchi are in the doubles semis against an Oklahoma State pair.

Choy/Higuchi move onto the doubles final! They’ll play UNC’s Jones/Sanford shortly!
If we can get some clarity on our doubles teams as a result of this tournament, that’s all to the good.

Looks like Choy/Higuchi lost 6-2 in the doubles final—it’s not yet clear whether they’re playing a second set—while Gordon is trailing 3-4 in the singles final (she was up 3-0, so that’s a disappointment).
**
Make that 8 games lost in a row. Thamchaiwat won the first 6-3 and is up 2-0 in the second. Sigh.
**
Gordon breaks back on deciding point to get the second set back on serve at 1-2. Hopefully she can consolidate the break for 2-2!
**
She cannot. Gordon trails 3-6, 1-3. Without being able to watch, I can’t say for sure, but “Gordon struggles again with her first serve and her opponent is capitalizing on her subpar second serve” is a story we’ve seen plenty of times before. (She just broke back for 2-3, though.)
**
Held to 3-3, and then broke to go up 4-3! Nice job, Michaela! And then from 30-40 she wins two straight to get to 5-3!

Gordon now has the chance to force a third set, serving up 5-4.
**
She sure didn’t make it easy on herself, but she takes deciding point to win the set 6-4 and force a third!
**
And Gordon breaks to open the third! She then goes up 40-0, Thamchaiwat gets it to 40-40, and Gordon finally wins the game to go up 2-0.
**
Another break for 3-0! Don’t let up, Michaela!
**
Held for 4-0 before Thamchaiwat held to 4-1, but Gordon is still up a double break.
**
Gave one of those breaks back. 4-2 with Thamchaiwat serving, but Gordon gets a pretty routine break and she’ll serve for the championship, up 5-2 in the third.
**
And that’s it! Gordon wins it 3-6, 6-4, 6-2! After a frustrating first set, Gordon figures it out and finishes strongly. A nice win over the #29 player in the country, and another singles title for Michaela!

In the semis, Choy/Higuch won 6-2 over the OSU pair who had crushed Gordon/Shin 6-1 the round before -- a great result for them.
In Stanford at the Australian Open news, Kristie Ahn lost in the first round to Wozniacki -- but still won
$62,325.
In not-Stanford at the Australian Open news, CiCi Bellis is playing in the first round, so she must have been doing well lately.

Yeah, I'd figured Gordon/Shin was going to be our #2 team after Arbuthnott/Blake, but this wasn't a great performance from them and then Shin teamed up with Mossmer in an added match, so I think it's fair to say doubles is still very much in flux. But if Choy/Higuchi have found some chemistry? That's great news.
