Maybe they switch Andres Fox back to DE. The other possibility is shifting away from the 4-2-5 to a formation that requires fewer DL (this also has the added benefit of providing more support for our LB's).

Fox was a class of 2018 signee, so he doesn't count in my two-year class evaluation.  Secondly, we have issues at OLB as well (Herron signed last year, zero OLB in this year's class).

RE: Class of 2020 - Spiny_Norman - 12-18-2019

Am I correct that two recruits (Filkins and Gilman) flipped a commitment to Stanford from another school?

We could kick DiCosmo back outside if Damuni looks good. Originally wanted to be an OLB. Sinclair already looks solid at ILB once he puts on weight, and having 3 in the same class seems a bit like overkill.

Good news is the staff is going hard on defense in '21, I believe. Should be 3 DL and 4 LBs.

Music to my ears.  I posted (here) that 3 DL and 2 OLB were critical for the class of 2021, and 2 ILB were in the "important" category, so 3 DL and 4 LB sounds about right.  Thanks, by the way, for compiling the list of defensive targets in that thread.

DiCosmo going back outside does make sense.  In addition to the three class of 2019 ILBers, there are two from 2018.  Then again, there are
four OLBs from 2018 if you include Fox, so that's ok for another two years.  But it boggles the mind that we would go through an entire year and not recruit any linebackers.  It's almost as if the lessons from the whiffs in 2016/17 were completely ignored.

RE: National Signing Day - BobK - 12-18-2019

Yes Elkins from cal and Gilman from iirc Washington State

RE: National Signing Day - 82lsju - 12-18-2019

18.  Alaka'i Gilman

It does indeed seem to defy logic. I simply can't imagine that nobody on the staff noticed this issue and that it just "slipped through a crack". Did we not have any viable options, or did we lose out by guys going elsewhere, or is it just a mystery?

We lost out on a couple guys going elsewhere, and stood pat rather than going for plan B's. IMO only taking 1 ILB and 1-2 OLB would've been fine (depending on the DiCosmo/Fox situation), but taking zero was stupid.

RE: National Signing Day - Langdude - 12-18-2019

Maybe we're planning on IBS taking a seventh year and converting him to ILB.

What am I not understanding here? Lee is a walk-on, but what about Pulsipher?

Right.  Sometimes taking a flyer on a project or a plan B is necessary.

Careful guys, this thread may end up in the Stanford Football / Shaw Sucks thread wasteland. . . .

EMMITT, SR:  "Carve your own legacy, Son".  The Hall of Famer looked real proud with the decision.
AGGIES are clearly disappointed.  EJ made a big splash in Division 6A in Dallas, big media market.

Now:

Key comments:

- Nobody in portal hasn't or won't have graduated if they indeed transfer
- Shaw is all in favor of guys transferring who have graduated; some guys will be coming back
- One more OL and one more DL expected in the class
- RBs are 3-down guys "which is where football is heading; no more downhill runners for 1-2 downs"
- Aiden Hector will start out at SAFETY
- Tanner McKee signed his LOI today

RE: National Signing Day - Langdude - 12-18-2019

In the press conference, Shaw just said that there were no spots available for ILB, so that's why we did not sign any.

Really? So what about the guys you were recruiting for that position?

He also said there was 1 OLB spot (presumably the spot held by Casey Toohill). I thought that comment
was more interesting for what it suggested re Pryts and Jordan Fox (i.e. that they are returning along
with previously announced Curtis Robinson).

As far as recruiting players, I am sure we offered academically qualifying players, but with the returners
we apparently have, that position appears to have become less of a priority. As such, at that point, I presume it was
in both our as well as the student-athlete's best interest to pursue other options.

Just 1 guy, a mega-stud. Wesley Steiner. I guess the thinking was "if it's him then great, otherwise we're standing pat." I think this means Pryts is also returning, which means the ILB room is up to 7.

I disagree with the way these numbers are calculated. Shaw said we had "a couple spots at DL" and one spot at OLB, which means staff thinks about this in terms of RIGHT NOW, not in a couple years when the players will be contributing. Fatal flaw in the logic.

The "one more DL expected in this class" is current commit Lance Keneley, who has not yet been admitted and therefore could not sign today.

Right.  This is why I do the math for two-year classes.  Figure over the course of two years, you take 40 players.  The breakdown should be approximately:
2 QB
2 RB
1 FB
4 WR
8 OL (3-4 tackles, 3-4 guards, 1-2 centers)
2 TE
5 DL (3-4 DEs, 1-2 DTs)
7 LB (3-4 OLB, 3-4 ILB)
7 DBs (3 S, 4 CB, including 1 to play NB)
1 specialist (P or kicker)

You can go ± 1 to 2, except at a position like QB, where you really do want a QB every damned year.
