That does require a bit of prior planning though. If by some accident you have fulfilled the requirements to graduate, are you allowed to not do so?

Interesting question.  Since graduation requires an affirmative action by the student (that is, the student/athlete needs to file for graduation) I wonder whether someone who has fulfilled all the requirements but hasn't filed for graduation would actually graduate?  You could envision a scenario where someone wants to take a couple extra classes that don't lead to a degree.

You can fulfill all requirements for graduation and not graduate. I did this in my sport. You need to apply to graduate. I came back for my last year with eligibility despite having finished all undergrad requirements. I did end up coterming but I never got my undergrad degree until the end of my last year despite having qualified for it a year earlier. I played a non-NCAA sport where graduates couldn't compete which was my motivation for not taking a degree earlier.

Question I have Samuel is if your friends would have had the opportunity to get a “free” year of grad school somewhere else (and assuming for the sake of thecquestion, no such option at Stanford) would they have done differently?  I think it’s safe to say that today most coming in as a Frosh, playing 3 and graduating in 4 is going to take that opportunity if the NFL is not an option. It’s certainly is the smart choice.  

From the programs perspective to me this means you dont redshirt anyone physically ready to play as a Frosh.  Play them early and often. And if merited more than the 4 games. Why worry about “burning redshirts”?

Do we know this to be true?  Changing the expected date of graduation usually has to be approved by an academic advisor.  At some universities it would not be approved as a routine matter--it is sometimes seen as giving an educational slot away that could better be used on the freshman class.  But I admit I don't know Stanford's policy...
