That's one area of potential concern. While the game was still relatively close, Washington had more offensive rebounds that we did. There was one stretch where they got several 2nd and 3rd chances. However during that dominating 4th Q, we evened that up a bit and they only ended up with an 11-10 edge in o-rebs. Nadia was just a tiger under the boards in the 2nd half!
At one point before the subs came in the announcers noted we were on a 20-4 run. That was awesome, and shows what we can do when we are in a defense/transition game.
Unfortunately, that's nothing new. As noted in a previous thread, we've given up double digit offensive rebounds to all but a handful of teams. Not that important against an overmatched team, but would be lethal against an elite team. You do not want to give multiple chances to Ionescu, Hebard and co. to score, because they will. Oregon had 16 offensive rebounds and Utah turned the ball over 20 times in the Ducks' easy win today.
And not just Oregon, but any good team will make you pay, like we did against UW today. We got second chance opportunities and converted on a bunch of them, especially in the first half.

Loved how Williams played. That is what we need from her - a heavy load on her but she is capable. Also loved Lacie in her few minutes. Jump[ has been quietly impressive and not just the threes. She has been good enough on defense against a few teams to stay out there. Not Jones' best game shooting but she still contributed some good things. Lexie played great defense on Melgoza when it mattered.
We still really need Carrington back. And a healthy Dodson too. No boot today, if that means anything.

A few personnel notes.
Dodson was back, helping the team warm up, and as noted--no boot and no outward sign of injury. Over the break she appears to have stayed home since she was not at the last couple of games, so I was relieved to see her back even if she was not dressed to play.
At the chalk talk someone asked about Anna Wilson and her redshirt appeal. Kate said "in progress." At least it wasn't "no." Of course, this says almost nothing, since even if she won a redshirt it would not necessarily be with us next year.
Some else asked about when Carrington would be back and Kate was less forthcoming than Lindy had been. "We don't know."
Kate talked about incoming Australian Agnes Nnopu. She was describe as a solid 6' guard in the mold of Carrington, strong and physically tough and a good defender. Kate noted that Carrington was graduating, so no hint of a possible redshirt for her.

KUDOS TO OUR YOUNG TEAM for scoring 47 points in the second half of the UW game and for being 13-1 at this point of the season! I think that our message board community rings far too much impatience and not enough praise for this young work-in-progress team.
The GoStanford.com site has compiled a set of pretty revealing seasonal stats, with headings that can be tapped to rearrange the data numerically by player. There are several take-ways from the data—Lexie is our leading scorer and rebounder, the team has eleven players averaging double digit minutes this season, Hannah Jump is one of the five top scorers on the team, and five of our players are hitting 75% or better on their free throws. Follow the URL below and select "Individual." Composite statistics are available for both the entire season and for the conference play.

I certainly agree with your sentiment. I am overjoyed at our current record and thrilled about the progress of our freshmen and sophomores in particular. They deserve great credit for adjusting to college basketball so rapidly. Among the highlights for me:
1) Lexie returning to her great early form.
2) Fingall's return to form after a devastating injury a year ago can also be added to the list of things for which we should be thankful.
3) Haley Jones' ability to give 30 minutes a game and fill a stat line--something that only a handful of Stanford WBB freshmen have ever been able to do. Despite her #1 ranking, this was not a given.
4) Hannah Jump's ability to hit threes that no one else would have the time to hit--to hit them accurately, and to already show moves that Karlie did not display until her Junior year.
What you may sense, though, is some fan angst about the rest of the season. We knew coming into the season that we were weakest inside and that Dodson had to show significant improvement and consistency for us to go far. And Carrington was possibly our most important returning player--she provided the energy and points needed to defeat Oregon in the Pac 12 tournament last year. The loss of those two makes it much less likely that we can compete with Oregon, and we may struggle with other Pac 12 and NCAA tournament teams if they do not come back.
It makes the difference between whether this is:
1) A rebuilding year in which our talented but green freshman class gets a lot of experience that will be beneficial in the future, or
2) A year in which we might reasonably be expected to win the Pac 12 regular season, tournament, and make it to the final four or beyond.
Fans always want more. The first alternative is actually a good one, but we of course want the 2nd. And there are growing signs that the second option will be very difficult to reach. I think we will know a whole lot more after the Oregon trip.

IIRC last season we got blown out by Oregon during the regular season and then beat them in the conference tourney. There is no reason to fret about this team at this point in the season. They are doing wonderfully. Just watch and enjoy.
How about this fact -- Stanford basketball is now 25-3. All right now!

I think reasonable ambitions for this team are:
1) Finish in the top-3 in the (stacked) Pac-12
2) Make it to the elite eight
Anything above that would be gravy!

As to the specific (game vs. the Huskies), first half was obviously non-ideal, though it seemed like we were missing a lot of bunnies. That, plus a lot of turnovers (nothing new for us, but esp. likely given how good UW is on defense), and some weak outside D on Rees, was the difference in the first half.
Second half, we looked like a well-oiled machine, and man oh man, when Williams turns it on, she's nearly unstoppable. What can so hard with her is that she will often run hot and cold, either within games (often cold in the first half and hot in the second half, as with last night), or from one game to another (compare the past two games to the two prior). It's clear how much of a difference she will make for us against top teams like Oregon and Oregon State, especially with Carrington out.
In terms of the general (our season to date, and ahead), I guess I'm fairly sanguine because if you told me at the start of the season that we'd not only be without Smith, but also Carrington and Dodson, and we'd be playing 2-3 frosh for most of the game, I'd definitely not thought we could go 13-1. Without Carrington and Dodson, I just don't think a Final Four run is a realistic expectation - I'd view us a tier back from UConn, Oregon, Oregon State, South Carolina, and Baylor, which right now seem like the best 5 teams in the country, with us, Louisville, NC State, and possibly UCLA just a tier below. Think about it - other than Williams and Fingall (still coming back from ACL), who are other our senior leaders on this team? I think Wilson and Jerome are spirit leaders, but they just don't have the floor minutes to lead on the floor. That was supposed to be Carrington, and unfortunately we just don't have her right now.
In this sense, I view this season less as a "rebuilding" year as a "transition" year, because we're building for the future
now. If Carrington can't come back soon, and isn't going to seek a medical red-shirt, then we essentially need to start thinking about the future now - getting the shooting guards who can replace her like Lexie & Lacie, Jones, and Jump (to some degree) as much time as possible. That means more turnovers and some sloppy play, that means we sometimes will give up a rebounding edge by playing smaller lineups, and that means an Elite Eight rather than Final Four run is a more realistic milestone to shoot for. If we're without Dodson this season, then the more minutes Belibi has to develop her back-to-the-basket moves, the better. Fingall is really strong around the basket, but she's also a terrific high post forward, and Belibi isn't. But that means accepting some of her back-to-backet plays will get rejected, or will end up as a bunny.
I guess once I heard that Carrington and Dodson were out with no timetable for return, my expectations rather radically readjusted, and the net effect, among other things, is that I'm enjoying a team largely comprised of freshmen and sophomores developing before my eyes. 40 point blowout wins? No. But so much to invest in now and see the fruits of over the next 2-3 seasons. :)

For this year, given the Carrington/Dodson situation, this makes sense to me. Of course, we want more for the players (and the fans), but the Pac-12 is indeed stacked. And a result like this would really lay a foundation for next year. If this is the way it goes, I want to see both the Oregon schools in the final four and one of them take it all. But we'll see. In the meantime, I'm heading to Eugene and Corvallis next week to see how we do. Two years ago I went, with limited expectations, and the Card took down both Oregon schools on their home courts. Of course, those were the games in which Carrington closed out OSU at the end of the game and McPhee went on a tear against Oregon. One can hope for another sort of totally off the charts game from someone again. One can hope.
RE: WBB: Stanford 77 Washington 56 -

I have reset my expectations downward as well, but still think we are capable of a Final Four run. Of course, if you wanted to maximize the development of all your players, you'd have Di and Maya sit for half the season to give the frosh as much experience as possible, then by the time your big guns are up to speed and ready for the post-season, you'd have freshmen that are already playing like sophomores.
I also think that Di is the heart and the soul of this team and the longer she sits, the more the other players have to step up in terms of leadership and intangibles.
So...assuming everyone can be healthy by the end of the year, having a key big and a key perimeter player down for an extended period might just lead to the best possible team by the time the NCAA's roll around.

If an ambition is something you strive for then, give me final four and pac 12 championship. Neither are out of reach.
Elite eight and top 3 feel like milestones to settle for.

Hopefully Di missing games will be like Plummer missing 10 matches. It allowed the others to find their mojo. Whe she returned, the team was solid and she was brilliant.

That's why I put the modifier "reasonable" in front of it. Winning the Pac-12 will be a tall order. And getting to the final four, while possible, requires some degree of luck.

Totally agree with everything 2006alum and everyone else has been saying about expectations. And I do think there is a top tier of final four teams in Oregon, UConn, Baylor and South Carolina. However, I am not sure I would include Oregon St. in that group. I think they are quite similar to our team and would have similar expectations for them (PAC-12 top three, elite eight and anything above that is extra)

Above "Elite 8" is gravy/extra. Hmm. Above Elite 8 is Final Four. Hard to ever poo-poo or diminish such an achievement.
And btw, the Stanford women are going to the Final Four THIS YEAR!!
