A few weeks ago, I was my typical late to the game, still driving to the game as it was about to start. I turned into KZSU in the middle of the anthem. It was so unexpectedly good, I literally thought there was some guest band, military or whatever, out on the floor playing the anthem. I don't mean to knock the LSJUMB, but most of what I hear them does not even seem to be intended to be high quality, so I didn't know that they could be that good.
Kudos to whatever forces or opportunities or student-musicians that have made this happen!

Near the end of the game, I pulled up Stanford records. IIRC, the lowest score by Cal vs Stanford was 35 (2008?), but with the 3s late in the game, Cal escaped that. It's been a long time since I remember a 40 point win (which was the lead when I was looking, but not at the end), but even that would not be in Stanford's bests.
Do NOT think this game showed off how good Stanford was. Instead, I think it showed how much of a mountain the Bears have in front of them. I believe there was a shot of the Cal bench during the game with no players visible (2 shortly came out of the locker room).
Against that very weak team, Stanford did have a really good defensive game, but how much of that was due to their inability to put the ball in the basket versus our making that very difficult to do? Offensively, we scored about average for us.
Rebounding: We got 16 of 37 chances (42% !!) at Cal's end and 34 of 42 at our end (81%). That is dominating. And I suspect it was much better when our regulars left the court. It is telling that there were more rebounds at the Stanford end even though we hit a much higher percentage of our shots.
The girl that dropped to the floor got a Lacie elbow to her mouth. I could not see the foul from the TV view during play, but they showed another angle. As Lacie went by, she raised her arm and her elbow caught the girl in the mouth (not jaw or nose). From what I saw at the game, and what I heard on the TV, it appears a tooth was knocked out. Ouch. I don't understand why Lacie (on defense) raised her arm at that time, which wasn't being restrained or interfered with. (Perhaps it is a move to narrow her body so she can get past an opponent more easily.) We see Lacie play a lot, and we know she doesn't have even that many fouls called on her. While I feel it wasn't intentional, I could imagine fans of Cal might think differently. IMO, the play should have been reviewed and a flagrant foul should have been called.
After 15 games, a freshman is leading in high score games:
Haley Jones 4 - Miss St, Oh. State, Davis, Cal
Lexie Hull 3 - USF, Buffalo, Texas
Kiana Williams 3 - Gonzaga, Tenn, UWash
Nadia Fingal 2 - CBU, WSU
Hannah Jump 1 - Syr
Lacie Hull 1 - No. Colo.
Ashton Prechtel 1 - EWU
Although Jones was high with 17 points in 26 minutes, Prechtel was notable with 13 points in 15 minutes.
Points/40 minutes playing time
Jump 100/189=21.2/40
Carrington 38/75= 20.3/40
Lexie 199/420=19.8/40
Prechtel 100/205=19.5/40
Moschkau 30/65=18.5/40,
Jones 185/405=18.3/40
Belibi 102/224=18.2/40
Williams 191/490=15.6/40
Fingal 119/323=14.7/40

Great statistical analysis, MT! I especially appreciate the points/minute breakdown. Quite revealing. It might show how much we miss Carrington--although she got her points against weaker teams. But as the assistant coaches have said over and over, the freshmen can play offense, the determinative factor is how well they can absorb the scouting report and use it to play defense. It was very clear before the game that the inability to absorb the scout was what had held Prechtel back, but Tempie noted that this week "she really seems to be getting it." Well, she went out and had one of her best games.
I could not help but compare the way Prechtel took the ball, back to the basket, defended by 6'7" Yue, and did a drop step to go around her and score--several times. That was a freshman going around a taller redshirt senior. Last week Belibi got blocked several times by 6'4" Darcy Rees. Belibi would try to face up and shot right into the block. She made one successful hook shot that reminded me of Brook the hook. More of that! Belibi has not been playing that long and I don't think she has yet developed all the offensive moves she needs to get around taller players. But the coaches seem to think Belibi is further along on defense. Prechtel improving her defense and Belibi improving her offense are their keys to more minutes and more success.
Saw this over at Bear Insider:
Quote:The Bears, who had struggled of late on offense, continued that trend. Cal scored only three points in the third period, the fewest ever in any quarter in program history.
“We had trouble putting the ball in the basket, and that’s been the case for a couple of games now,” said Cal head coach Charmin Smith. “It took a toll here in Maples, with who we were playing against, and the crowd and everything. We got a little quiet.”

Nice win, thought our defense was very good until the end and the offense was fine. Cal looked a mess, not sure if just a bad game and they are better or, well not. I think a key was our rebounding. Cal has been rebounding well so taking that away really hurt them. Also thought they had a ton of moving screens. Seemed to me their offense looked like two or three players "setting" screens in a mosh at the top of the offense a lot, mostly floating around and getting in the way, really.
I also thought the end of the game pressing was not in their best interest. Sure, it maybe felt good for them to turn over our reserves a few times and get the score into semi-respectable territory, but does that help them in the long run? Tara says pressing is fool's gold because you can't do it against the better teams very successfully. Probably would have helped cal more to leave off the press and run their offense against our reserves. If they had any success in that it may have been a positive. Pressing our reserves isn't going to help them for the next game. Getting their half-court offense in better shape might.

All around a great game. However I am going to nitpick a bit on the reserves who got extended playing time in the 4th. I feel like Jenna Brown is very talented and should be a good ball handler yet she struggled again against the press and turned the ball over multiple times. It could also be that the players she was playing with aren't the best at getting open for a pass. Also, I was hoping to see more from Jump and Moschkau. They are both such good three point shooters and we could use them in tighter games. Yes Jump does get some of those minutes but I was hoping to see from both of them, 1) ability to create their own 3-point shot and/or 2) ability to pump fake and finish either with a drive or mid-range shot. Instead the 4th quarter just seemed a bit of a mess and a lost opportunity.

I didn't record the ASU-Oregon game as it played, but had to settle for the PAC-12 channel replay.
Spoiler Alert: (Did I confuse you? I meant that the PAC-12 spoiling of the replay.)
The PAC-12 channel "modified" the replay to lose the game from Ore 56-52 ASU at Q4 4:35 up to Ore 56-58 ASU Q4 3:37. A rather critical minute of playing time.
Both teams played well. Oregon did not seem the juggernaut that some of their scores might suggest. I have to presume this was an off game for them.
One of the impressive stats was the information that no ASU player was in the top 20 scorers (PAC-12 pts/game), and they were the only team without such a player. (Today's stats show Tapley with 11.8 pts in 23.4 min (=20.2/40min) at #20. Lexie is at #16; Kiana #19. ) They have 6 players averaging more than 20 minutes per game, with the top at 25.5. Stanford has 4 players with > 20 minutes, with Kiana at 31.2. (On the other hand, Stanford has 11 (of 13) players averaging 12.7 min/game; ASU has 10 (of 13) players averaging 12.2 min/game. As this is an average per game, it does include DiJonai.)
As is often the case, officiating impacts the result. Sabally picked up a charge her 4th foul with just under 6 minutes left, when the defender's foot was clearly on the circle of the protected area. The 4th foul clearly affected Sabally's play after that.
--------
Stanford has to be well-prepared for the next 3 games. After Friday's win, Stanford may be looking past Sunday's game, which can always be dangerous. Even so, I'm not too worried about that. As for Oregon, I expect they'll want to take out their frustrations on Arizona. I do hope Oregon prevails, or we might have hell to pay when we visit them on Thursday. I expect the Oregon State - ASU game to be very interesting. Oregon State will be playing for a #1 ranking, and will be very focused on Sunday's game. ASU will have a lot of confidence but won't be overconfident. Even if OSU gets ahead, ASU will know they can come back from a deficit. If OSU loses, Baylor will take #1, probably for the rest of the season. I believe if OSU wins, they clearly should be #1, hopefully only for a week.
If Stanford were to win all their games this week & next, the polls should be very interesting. I'd think in such a scenario, Stanford will have a strong claim to #1, haven beaten 2 top-5 teams in the week. As I said, if OSU wins this weekend & next, they clearly should be #1. If OSU loses to ASU but beats us, I think their claim to #1 after next week would be as strong, or stronger, than Baylor's.
There are enough scenarios that it makes my head swim, so let's see what happens on the court. In some sense, all this mid-season mixing won't matter much, but the big games should pay off come tournament time.
(By the way, on my Sling Box, there is a "Stanford at Cal" scheduled at 3:30 Sunday on PAC-12BA. That is NOT the game you want. Tomorrow's WBB game starts at 5PM, and is also just labeled "Stanford at Cal". FYI: TiVo is apparently entering into some sort of relationship with Sling in the near future, so some of Sling's misfeatures may be avoidable.)

A few quick scattered thoughts:
Loving watching Jones improve from one game to the next. Yes, she makes some silly mistakes, but her upside is brobdingnagian and it's been ages since a freshman has impacted at all parts of the court (Wiggins?).
Also loved the Prechtel show. Her back to basket moves are the best I've seen from Stanford since Chiney and she has a lot of versatility for 6'5". Am I the only one reminded of Lauren Cox in terms of her ability to play the high post, assist, drive, screen, and shoot?
In terms of Jump or Moschau getting free to shoot the trey or create their own outside show, how? Jump in particular has too much of a reputation now - even if she does a pump fake drive her defender is still locked onto her, especially when the third string is in so weaker passes and fewer threats to guard.
Am I the only one who wonders what is up with Brown? She, not Lexie, was our McD's A-A last year, and yet Lexie is our leading scorer and Brown seems to struggle handling the press and doing anything other than drive into traffic.
Speaking of: I actually think Cal running the press was smart. Realistically, their wins are likely to come not from great teams but the bottom half of the PAC-12, where the press may be effective. Might as well practice against our third string, which is much closer to a Utah, Colorado or Washington than and Oregon or UCLA...

Both UCLA and Oregon were down in the first quarter but came back to win, in UCLA’s case a three point win over Colorado.
ASU is up 31-25 on OSU in the third.

The MBB team and the women (tied) lead the league. When did that happen last?
With the Lopi? Or 2004 Monty’s last season ?

The 1st part of the game seems to be a similar start to last time. Williams looking awesome. 18-9 after first quarter.

Call is putting up a better fight, hitting a few treys helps their cause. Jones is wonderful in transition.
But then several silly turnovers and some hot Cal shooting narrowed our lead to 3 before Jones hit a trey. Half closed Stanford 36 Cal 29.

One other factor - not a single foul called on Cal in the second quarter. My personal favorite - on a Cal 2 on 1 break, the second Cal player literally ran at the Stanford defender and pushed her ten feet out of the path of the ball. Two points for Cal.
I think Stanford also tried to play too fast for a lot of the quarter. They were tearing cal apart running the offense in the first.
