Uh, no.
I forgot to add :=) to my comment. Lester Hayes is the guy that I most associate with Stickum.
Quote:Stickum is is probably most associated with Raiders defensive back Lester Hayes, who won the 1980 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award with 13 interceptions, then added five more en route to Super Bowl XV. Hayes smeared a half a jar (about nine ounces) on his body each game, the honey-like goo dripped from his forearms, hands and uniform.
Competitive advantage, baby.
The NFL banned Stickum and similar adhesives in 1981. In his final six seasons, Hayes never tallied more than four interceptions. Of playing with Stickum, Hayes said this to the Houston Chronicle in 2004: “I could catch a football behind my back on one knee. It was tremendous stuff.”

Quote:fellow Raiders such as running back Mark van Eeghen and receiver Fred Biletnikoff had used the substance before him. In fact, Biletnikoff introduced the substance to Hayes when Hayes was a rookie.

Caleb Bowman should have used stickum.

Darrelle Revis doesn't appreciate Sherman's ability.
The guy got his pound of flesh apparently waiting for Sherman to give up one long pass completion in a 34-13 game, so he could say Sherman isn't that great because he doesn't play man-to-man coverage at an elite level.
We seem to have had this discussion before, right? Sherman isn't an elite athlete who wins with superior speed and quickness. He uses his mind to process things and react while playing a defensive scheme that suits his ability. Revis is saying he'll be in trouble against KC because they will force him into man-to-man coverage responsibilities. We'll see, but the Niners play zone with the fastest Linebackers in the NFL, and a very fast deep Safety in Jimmie Ward that make this equation not as simple as it might seem. The Niners will probably play Nickel pretty much the entire game.
Steph Curry can't dunk, but is he a lousy basketball player because of this? He's not an elite defender, but does that take away from his greatness as a basketball player? What about Madison Bumgarner? He never threw 100 MPH, probably topped out at 94 MPH fastball at his peak, but do we say he wasn't a great Pitcher? Hell, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith - arguably the best carriers of a football in league history - are known for not having elite speed, but getting the job done better than 99% of players to have played the game.

Also, Darrell Reevis doesn’t know the difference between “accept” and “except”.

Sounds like Kobe Bryant describing Steve Nash. He said "he's not an elite athlete -- but he's a good enough athlete. He's not an elite defender -- but he's a good enough defender." Sherman was graded the #1 CB by PFF.com, as they rated the 49ers the second best secondary in the NFL:

The "good enough athlete" thing comes from
Sherman himself:
Quote:“Athleticism has never been what made me special, you know I mean?” Sherman said in a sit-down interview this week. “I’m a good enough athlete. I’m not terrible. You can’t be a bad athlete and be successful in this league. But I always felt like my mind was my advantage because I can think through case scenarios …” — and here he snaps his fingers seven times in quick succession — “… in split seconds.”

Briefly, on Wikipedia, the entry for Mostert said: "Dominque Raheem Mostert (born April 9, 1992) is an American football running back for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Purdue. He previously played for the Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, and is the current owner of the Green Bay Packers."

Actually no.
You don't quite need elite sprinter speed to win any of those HS events. It helps most in HH, but good form, especially in HS, will get you far.
Generally those that run HH are doing it because they aren't fast enough to run the 100 or 200. No doubt he was/is faster than most HS sprinters, but there are some that are faster.
Most days the WRs in the NFL are not really able to utilize that extreme top end speed often, so Sherman's understanding of the formation and the routes is enough. In most games the best DBs are faster than the WRs, and that just isn't true in Sherman's case. That's OK. More to being a good DB than 40 times.
The Chiefs WRs are exceptionally fast and Mahomes' passing abilities may allow them to get a long TD or two on Sherman. No doubt the Chiefs' WR beat Sherman in the 40, but can they get into plays that give them enough time to exploit that difference? Will the WRs get the TDs or will Sherman get the INTs? It will be fun to see.

BobK responded to the question regarding Sherman's athleticism, not his speed.

Thank you akiddoc. I was about to point that out. I would say Sherman in HS had extreme athleticism. Plus Sherman jumped 50-0 at Stanford. # 9 all time at the time at Stanford

Sherman's got a lot of capability. He catches the ball well, and QBs rarely test him. He was the #4 tackler on the team over the regular season and at 6'3", 205 pounds he's a very big cornerback. Basically, he's pretty darned capable. I assume they don't give out All-Pro slots -- even second team -- like candy.
