Will actually be pretty interesting to see if a couple of the frosh who burnt shirts end up retaining them this season. At this point the questions are the status of our portal guys, and after that, who takes the guard spots since we have Little, Dalman, and Sarell pretty firmly entrenched.
It of course depends on health. If all the tackles stay healthy all season, you can redshirt Miller and McLaughlin. Unless Hattis or Hamilton comes back or we get the grad transfer, we are looking at three guards (assuming Stratford is unable to play) and it is hard to see how you set out to redshirt anyone, let alone someone with experience. In fact, you are probably looking at Hornibrook and Bragg as your starters. Though maybe we move a tackle inside, and if injury hits, we might have no choice. IF Hattis and/or Hamilton and/or grad transfer come in, that affords us some more flexibility.
Although we have a little more depth than we did last year, we are still pretty precariously thin on OL, and I hope we have another four-plus lineman haul in '21.

Yeah, should've specified. But you know Stanford folks and their pedantry. (I know well because I do it too!)
Also, @Langdude, Ayden Hector will be playing - or at least starting out at - safety.

The target number is 3-4. I would be ok with 3 if we sign a fifth this year, as we are expecting to.

UCLA's starting tackle Chris Murray (but he was a guard in high school) is now in the transfer portal. Stanford offered when he was a HS recruit. I thought at the time he had serious interest in Stanford before choosing UCLA. Maybe he will take another look.

Moved Ayden Hector from CB to S. (Thanks BC and SMF.)
Glad to hear about that switch; we need it. He instantly becomes probably the best safety on our roster.

Raises an interesting question about four-year-ago admission issues. What if grad students raise their game, academically speaking? If he graduated with a 3.7 from UCLA, would that obviate door #1 issues from high school?

I would be utterly shocked if every single person who got accepted to Stanford grad school would've been accepted to Stanford undergrad. They're pretty different things, a lot of people are a lot more mature/capable at 20 than they were at 16, and as far as I know no grad school on earth gives a shit about what you did in high school.

When I was 32, a tax accountant asked me what I got on my SATs. He was interviewing me with the office managing partner who struggled unsuccessfully with rolling his eyes at the question. I told him, then asked what he got on the SATs. He looked a little surprised to be asked. Yes, I got the job.

Yes, that's a very good point. This would be a slightly different story perhaps (though still beyond a longshot, as any football grad transfer is) were Murray a grad transfer. He's not. He's a sophomore.

I'm confused. Are frosh and soph year college grades and transcripts inadmissable for consideration? Or do the high school transcripts and test scores of three years earlier carry the most weight?
RE: 2020 Stanford Football Personnel -

I'm saying we don't do undergrad transfers for football (or basically any sport, almost ever). But I don't want this thread to drift into a discussion of something irrelevant, because Murray isn't coming here. This is the 2020 personnel thread. Let's focus on them.
Interestingly, if Pryts does return (as is hinted at by social media), ILB suddenly becomes one of the deeper positions on the team. If Sinclair puts on 20lbs, that's 5 guys to rotate through right there, without counting the other 2 redshirting frosh - and who knows what they will become.
Also curious what happens with Andres Fox. Does he put on weight and play with his hand in the dirt again? It seems the OLB experiment may not have worked out.

I actually lived across the hall from Taylor Uhl after she transferred in from Minnesota. Really nice and REALLY smart. Plus I got to meet a bunch of women's soccer players, which was a welcome bonus for an eligible 19-year-old bachelor.
And so this doesn't keep the thread drift going, another observation about the 2020 team: check out what the injury bug/forced burnt shirts did to the class balance. ELEVEN burnt shirts in a scholarship class of 23. My hope is we see a few frosh (but not as many as last year) burn shirts this year to even out the counts a bit. If a guy is ready to play, you play him...and in the age of the portal, you can't rely on someone being around for a fifth season anyways.
My fingers are crossed that one or two of those OL burnt shirts can be re-worn this season. That rebuild will still be going on for another year or two. Poor Carberry...the guy inherited a total mess, and then half the room died. We were literally down to our final five guys by the last game of the season. Hopefully our injury karma pendulum swings the other way.
That said, to me the starting five actually feel pretty set, with Little and Sarell at OT, Dalman at OC, and likely Bragg at OG. If one of the portal guys (Hattis or Hamilton) returns, IMO it's because he likely gets the nod at the other OG spot, and first crack at OT if Little or Sarell goes down. Otherwise it'll be Barrett Miller. Myles Hinton is a stud and ready to play right away too - and much more so than our frosh were last year (not their fault of course...most OL take a couple years to be ready...hell, some never are).

Yes, deep, the question is whether there is quality in that depth. But five players with two redshirts is better than what we were previously looking at (three players, of which there was a total of maybe four games worth of experience, combined).
Now let's get those defensive linemen back!

As Bob said, there is 1 more probable '20 signee besides Keneley, and the LDS guy won't count til '22. Thus we actually need 9 or more players to transfer/retire.
Given there are 10 scholarship guys still in the portal, we will be extremely close to full if even just a couple of them return, depending on the number of retirements/additional transfers.
Given that there are now 9 scholarship players in the portal, and assuming two late signees, we could be at 85 (though pending a medical retirement). And if other players come back from the portal, we may well be at the limit.

14 linebackers on scholarship now, none of whom are true freshmen. Plus Keck and Caleb Phillips and a few other walk-ons. Not bad. Can any of these guys play on the defensive line in an emergency? Because, um, the defensive line is really looking like an emergency if Williams and Swann leave. A lot of them played d-line in high school (Umerah, Kaufusi, DiCosmo, Andres Fox), but none of their listed weights scream "lineman." Can any of the defensive ends play tackle at least? Could the Opening Day depth chart (if everyone is healthy) at defensive tackle be
DWP
true freshman Tobin Phillips
end of list

Stanford can run the innovative 1-3-7 defense.
