That's what I've always thought. But it seems like players such as Peek and Hamilton redshirted their true frosh years for preparation and growth, not injury, as, until last year, was the custom for just about every true freshman at Stanford.

The counter argument is IBS, who did get a sixth year even though there was no known injury in at least one of his lost years.  Then again, the word “known” is doing some work here. We all assume that a player who doesn’t play freshman year for whom an injury is not announced voluntarily takes a redshirt. That may not necessarily be the case.

That's my whole point. IBS wanted a sixth year (like Peek and Hamilton), and so their redshirt freshman year is judged to be via injury when it seems it was for other reasons. But perhaps, for reasons such as these, the team has its medical staff document injuries for their redshirt freshmen just in case something like this happens, even though the player would have redshirted (redshort?) anyway.

That rule has apparently been changed as of April 2018. The relevant NCAA bylaw reads:

Quote:12.8.1.7.1 Waiver Criteria. A waiver of the five-year period of eligibility is designed to provide a student-athlete with the opportunity to participate in four seasons of intercollegiate competition within a five-year period. This waiver may be granted, based upon objective evidence under the following circumstances: (Revised: 4/17/91, 1/11/94, 8/10/94, 10/12/95, 4/27/00, 7/30/10, 7/31/14, 4/25/18 applicable to a student-athlete who qualifies for a waiver that would provide the opportunity to participate in four seasons of competition within a five-year period)

(a) The student-athlete did not use a season of intercollegiate competition in his or her initial year of full-time, collegiate enrollment due to an institutional decision to redshirt the student-athlete; the student-athlete was listed on the institution's squad list and was eligible for competition during the segment of the season that concludes with the NCAA championship; and the student-athlete was deprived of the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate competition in one other season due to circumstances beyond the control of the student-athlete or institution; or

(b) The student-athlete is deprived of the opportunity to participate for more than one season in his or her sport within the five-year period of eligibility for reasons that are beyond the control of the student-athlete or the institution.

NCAA Eligibility Bylaw

Subsection a) seems to have been inserted specifically to allow a frosh year redshirt to not count in the total, apparently with the logic that one is still playing four years within five consecutive years.

You do still have to apply, and not all applications are granted.

Thanks CTCard.  I was unaware of the change in rules, but I am glad it was made so as not to disadvantage players who have taken a voluntary redshirt.

I don't think any would get in. The tradeoffs that would be expected for both the football team and the GSB would be too great.
