We’re on court now. Here’s where we are so far in doubles:
1. Arbuthnott/Blake lead 3-2 (on serve)
2. Gordon/Shin trail 1-2 (down a break)
3. Choy/Higuchi lead 4-1 (up double break)
1. Arbuthnott/Blake lead 4-3 (on serve)
2. Gordon/Shin lead 3-2 (on serve)
3. Choy/Higuchi lead 4-3 (up a break)
1. Arbuthnott/Blake trail 4-5 (down a break)
2. Gordon/Shin lead 4-3 (on serve)
3. Choy/Higuchi lead 5-4 (up a break)
Choy/Higuchi were serving for the set but were broken. Reverse happened on 1, where Arbuthnott/Blake broke to stay alive. 5-5 on both of those courts. Gordon/Shin are serving up 5-3, though!
Gordon/Shin win 6-3, but Courts 1 and 3 are in tiebreakers!

A different story in the second sets, as Stanford is down at least a break on 1, 5, and 6. Arbuthnott has battled back, though!

Choy is joy. 2-0 Stanford.
Higuchi makes it 3-0 Stanford!
Gordon is in trouble in the 3rd set. Looks like it needs to be Emily to win this thing.
Blake is pushed to a 3rd set. Shin is fighting to get a 3rd at 5-4.
And Shin gets a 3rd set. GO CARD!
After winning the first set 6-0, Gordon loses her match 6-0, 1-6, 2-6. Yuck.
Emily is 1 point away from winning.
Emily clinches it! 4-1 WIN!!

It’s a 4-1 win after Arbuthnott clinches! Blake was up 2-0 in her third, and Shin was on serve, so we had other pathways.

So, it’s Stanford-UCLA and UNC-Duke tomorrow in the semifinals. Duke winning again today was an upset only because Duke was underseeded. They look every bit a top 5 team in the country.
Stanford is the nominal favorite over UCLA due to seeding, but looking objectively at the two lineups and how they’ve been playing, Stanford will be *very lucky* to escape with a win. More likely, Stanford loses the doubles point (UCLA is terrific in doubles), and Stanford goes on to lose 4-2 or so. They may not be better than we are by the end of the season, but I have to be honest with myself—they sure as heck look better than we do right now.
Fingers crossed, though!

FYI, the semifinal against UCLA is at 1:30 Pacific today. If we lose, that’s it for the tournament, as it’s our third match, but if we win, the final is tomorrow at 9am Pacific.

The tenacity of the Stanford women's tennis team never ceases to amaze me. Go take down the Bruins! GO CARD!

Here are the anticipated singles lineups:
1. #6 Gordon vs. #14 Elysia Bolton
2. Arbuthnott vs. #5 Abigail Forbes
3. #77 Blake vs. #16 Jada Hart
4. #123 Shin vs. Abi Altick
5. Choy vs. #114 Annette Goulak
6. Higuchi vs. Sasha Vagramov
Man, those top three lines are brutal. If Gordon were in midseason form, maybe I’d give her an edge, but not the way she’s been playing. Forbes is a big ask for Arbuthnott, and the same goes for Hart with Blake. If Shin had been playing better, I might give her the edge over Altick, but again, her current form doesn’t give me a great deal of confidence. Choy likely has a coin flip, and Higuchi might be the only match where I’m more optimistic, but Vagramov is a really tough draw—she’s a very good freshman, and she’s the kind of tall, big-hitting player that gives Higuchi fits.
That’s not to say we don’t have a chance! We tend to rise to the occasion when we play UCLA. Gordon could *absolutely* beat Bolton, this could be the match where Shin shakes it off and finds the late-season form she had last year, and Blake could continue to show that she’s a force to be reckoned with. This team, as always, refuses to be beaten. Arbuthnott will force a third set out of sheer stubbornness, probably.

So what's up with Gordon: 6-0 first set yesterday, then blasted 1-6 and 2-6 the next two sets? Maybe an injury that was not affecting her the first set but compromised her after that? Hard to understand, unless the change in level of play after the first set was all her opponent's.

We're down a break early on all 3 doubles courts. :(

Yeah, we’re just not a match for UCLA in doubles. They’re so good.

6-1, 6-1 doubles, and we were down 5-2 in the third match. Ouch.

I'll take the moral victory of not being bageled and look forward to a war in singles. :)

This is a big part of why I think UCLA is a (maybe slight, maybe more than slight) favorite to win the Pac-12 this year. They’re just nails in doubles, like always, but the top 3 this year in singles is just so tough. And the back half of the lineup is no slouch, either.
From a tennis fan perspective, if we don’t pull this out, I’ll be really interested to see how well UCLA matches up with UNC.
Of course, I’m *more* interested in seeing how *we* do against UNC, but we’ve got some work to do first!

Yikes. Down a set at 1, 2, 3, 6. This is looking to be a 4-0 loss.
