RE: OT: Cheap Eats around Stanford - Mick - 02-28-2020

My flavorites:

Hamburgers: First choice is Clarke's Charcoal Broiler on El Camino in Mt. View.  Yes, it's a little far afield.  Worth it, trust me.  Second choice, Gott's.  Product is very good, but the client service is generally the worst I've ever had.  People behind the counter who really don't want to be there.  And there's two In-N-Out franchises, both in Mt. View, one on the El Camino right near 85, and one on Rengstorff, right near 101.  BTW, I basically prefer Mt. View restaurants over Palo Alto restaurants.

Pizza: Loved Applewood, but it's gone.  So is the downtown Palo Alto Round Table Pizza, though there's one near Oregon Expressway / Colorado.  Terun on California is very good.  Patxi's on Emerson is pretty good.

Chinese:  Chef Chu's on El Camino on the Mt. View/Palo Alto border.  Dumpling City.

Coffee:  Philz on south end of University.  Blue Bottle on north end of University.

Mediterranean: Evvia, Just of University.  My wife's favorite restaurant.

for pizza I would add

- Howie's in Town and Country
- Delfina on Emerson (where the Empire Tap Room used to be)

Our favorite breakfast place...

Thanks for all the posts here. I live near University downtown, but my favorite restaurants over the years keep closing and I have to find some new faves.

The only one I've been to a lot that hasn't been mentioned is Sancho's. It's a pretty good fast Mexican place. The fish tacos are good.

for thai, we like thaiphoon on emerson south of university. salmon green curry, lettuce wraps - yum.

agree on asian box in town and country.

for japanese we eat a lot at onigilly on university near emerson.
on the same block is sprout cafe for very good salads with a variety of toppings.

sushirrhito on university near cowper is fun.

for dessert consider tin pot ice cream in town and country.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Didn't have much time today, scrimmage at Avery was pretty much nonstop. That said, a quick shout out to the Rhody softball team. Wandered through their pregame, or perhaps postgame, tailgate to and from the parking lot, commented how good everything smelled and a dad from Fresno treated me to fabulous tri tip sandwich. Talk about great cheap eats!

Tomorrow we will certainly be hitting something new, as the rugrat will not let me watch her clinic. . . .

RE: OT: Cheap Eats around Stanford - cardcrimson - 03-01-2020

Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

Hit Town and Country for the simplicity, of sorts. Gotts was good, as Mick pointed out, service (if you call counter service, service), fair to partly cloudy. Didn't realize the food was a la carte, wish I had fries to complement the burger--would have thought the help would have pushed sides with the meal. Not too expensive, though, and enjoyable food.

Enjoyed Sushi House for a quick bite before they closed mid afternoon. Reasonable prices, and pretty tasty. Spiciest rolls we've ever had, and my wife craves spicy. Surprised they don't offer wine, just beer and saki. Will probably go back.

The h u g e hit was Howie's pizza. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Daughter had two clinics at Menlo (taught by two Stanford guys with two NC rings each), so we got her a slice to eat between them. She loved it, so we ended up going back and ordering a medium for afterwards. She ate half of it on the way home. She loved it!

I’m a burger guy.

Has Kirk’s dropped off that much?  I only saw it mentioned once. It was a fantastic burger when it was on University.  But that was a long time ago.  Clarke’s (Mick’s suggestion) in MV is terrific.  But I always thought the old Kirks was better.

For Chinese, I liked Su Hong’s. (A little closer to Stanford than Chef Chu’s.  And, I think less expensive.)

Also nobody mentioned Rosatti’s. How is it after the face lift?

they did a good job with the Zott's remodel.  Prices went up a little but not all that much.  The food is much better.  The food choices are much broader, they have added salads and pizza.  It is much more family friendly now.

in the fall the place was generally packed, I'd image that has slowed down a little this winter, but given the lack of rain so far maybe not.

I like the Wahlburger on University

Su Hong's in Menlo Park has been gone for quite a while.  Su Hong's in Palo Alto closed a few (6?) months back (another Chinese restaurant opened there - I haven't been so I can't comment on it).

I like Kirk's, it's still our pre-game choice.  Gott's just feels to anti-septic, especially with a more local option like Kirk's 20 feet away.

RE: OT: Cheap Eats around Stanford - CompSci87 - 03-02-2020

Kirk's has been a sentimental favorite since my student days, so I kind of resented Gott's opening next door. I've eaten at Gott's a few times anyway and found it good.

Kirk's has really upped their game in some ways. Remember the old California Ave. location with no deep fryer, so no fries or onion rings, and the rather faded and greasy decor. The current location has good fries, onion rings or strings, and generally a bigger menu. The burgers are a little inconsistent, though, depending (I guess) on who's cooking. Never bad, but sometimes tastier than others.

Service is whoever they can get. Usually just fine, though sometimes the cashier is underage and you have to wait for someone from the back to have a chance to come out and pour your beer. For a little while they had a cashier who perpetually needed a shower... Ugh.

Does any one remember Jose’s which was a Cuban place on El Camino in Palo Alto?   Barbecue duck empanadas and other interesting fare.    1980’s to put a timeframe.

First Gott's I went to was the Gott's just outside of St. Helena. Thought it was extraordinary, or maybe it was just the halo effect from a Napa vacation. Still eat at Gott's 4-5 times a year.

I'm surprised at how few mentions of Mexican food this thread generated. My old go to was Tres Hermanos but I recently learned they closed up shop. That's a shame.

Absolutely!  Jose’s was excellent.
