RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - 81alum - 03-01-2020

We lead 46-29 after 3 quarters.  Belibi is 9/9 and just passed up a dunk for a finger roll.

ASU is going to get emotional as their five seniors contemplate their last game in this gym.  Expect a run in the 4th.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - mbdude - 03-01-2020

Almost a 4 min scoring drought, asu on a run

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - Jskass - 03-01-2020

I can only follow via ESPN Play by play due to travels but why wouldn’t you keep Belibi in for Q4 andnow we lost half our lead?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - stanford22 - 03-01-2020

Why isn’t Fran in, and why is Alyssa in?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - 81alum - 03-01-2020

Well, the run came, but we win 55-44 after leading by 22.  Traded time for points as we ran the clock down.   Whew.  I guess we hope for Utah to beat UCLA now :)

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - TheFarm07 - 03-01-2020

Ugh, even after this win, I feel like we lost. The fourth quarter really put a damper on the rest of the game. Why wasn't Fran playing for most of the fourth? Why do we get so lackadaisical on offense when we have a big lead? Yes, ASU will fight, but doesn't mean we have to make it easier for them.

I am still troubled by this team.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - mbdude - 03-01-2020

good win but turnovers 2nd half.  we had over 6 minute drought

I calledfor Prechtel earlier but I recall announcers casually mentioned before AZ game that she was under the weather and may not play. i'll have to check replay

The run shouldn't be preordained or gifted. We have to expect that and we made that run possible with 4 straight turnovers at the beginning of the fourth. We have to put our foot down and just don't let them go on a run, just because it's Senior Day.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - stanford22 - 03-01-2020

Did Prechtel even play?   I don’t get why Fran didn’t start the 4th quarter.   They would have had to guard her which would have made the shots easier for the other people. Instead, Maya is in and the offense goes no where.  I don’t get the strategy here.

If you're troubled by this team, I recommend you become a Duck, Gamecock, or (Baylor) Bear. Literally every other WCBB team this season has had lapses, bad nights, and shoddy stretches. And even those three teams have all suffered at least one L this season.

As the time-tested sports adage goes, a win is a win. We're a beat up team that went into back-to-back hostile environments in under 36 hours to face two Top 25 teams. We're in the midst of an emerging international pandemic, and our ladies are about to buckle down for finals. I imagine they're tired, sore, (in some cases) hobbled, and (in all cases) stressed.

Let's take the win, be grateful that our B- game can produce a double-digit win, and hope Kiana Williams is provided with unlimited massage therapy between now and the PAC-12s...

...speaking of which, am I the only one wondering whether March Madness will go off as normal now that it appears COVID-19 is very likely spreading uncontrollably? I saw something about the NCAA considering running the tournament without fans in the stands to reduce the risk of its spread. But doesn't that leave unaddressed the risks to the players from all the travel and (unavoidable) physical contact among the players? If major corporations are voiding all non-essential travel for their employees, at what point does it seem reckless for universities and the NCAA to require their student-athletes to run those risks?

What's something else those three teams have in common? They are the heavy favorites for the national title. And you know why they are the heavy favorites? Because they limit their inconsistency, bone-headed plays and have the ability to put away opponents. We all want the team to win the national title, but it's not going to happen unless they fix these mistakes that are under our control.

For example, we often use youth as an excuse or explaining factor on mistakes or why the team is not performing as well as it should. South Carolina just completed conference play undefeated, beating quality teams like Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi State, with THREE freshmen starting. It appears that youth hasn't stopped them from having an excellent season and being a national title favorite (and probable #1 overall seed in the tournament)

Yes, we have had more than our fair share of injuries that has put us at a disadvantage. But that shouldn't explain away why we make bad passes or let teams come back from second half deficits or rely so much on Kiana on offense, especially when we are trying to burn clock.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - Jskass - 03-01-2020

OMG did Cal just win despite West missing 2 FTs?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - StanFanFam13 - 03-01-2020

WOW. Cal just did to Arizona what Arizona did to us on Friday. Last-second, one-point win! I like the announcers' characterization of the Pac-12 this season as "iron sharpening iron." I still love the days when we won our Pac-12 games by 20, but this sure has been an exciting time to be a fan in a long-underrated conference!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - WBB fan - 03-01-2020

Fantastic finish for Cal at Arizona -- doesn't affect our tournament seeding since Card beat ASU, but great for Bay Area pride. And great for Charmin. More evidence of just how tough the Pac-12 is.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - PVTree - 03-01-2020

Barring an upset in Westwood, we'll finish third in conference and have gone 0-4 vs. the other 3 teams with 1st round byes in the P12 tourney.

Likely that our road to the championship will be River Rodents => Polar Bears => Quackers.

I see a 3-seed in the Baylor region in our future.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Arizona State 44 - 81alum - 03-01-2020

We are hoping for Utah to beat UCLA to make us a 2 seed.  That is about as likely as Cal beating Arizona....ooops... :)  We will probably play Oregon State on Friday, but we could play Arizona State if we climb to a 2.  That is assuming that those two teams win their games on Thursday.

As for the ending of the game, I would not be too down on the team for the 4th quarter run on us.  Once we were up by 22 I am sure that Tara told the team to run the clock down on every possession.  When you have 10 seconds in the half court to execute, you are not going to be as successful as if you take the first good open shot in your possession.  Several of those turnovers came on desperation passes at the end of the shot clock.  But so long as we were taking 25 seconds off the clock for every 2 points we gave up we were gong to win.  Would it have been better if we had executed our offense more successfully?  Of course.  But we did what the coaches wanted us to do the most--win the game by draining the clock.  We did not actually need any more points to do that so long as we made every possession a long one.

Also, something I did not note in my write-up, which is done up top.  Remember we were just bemoaning our inability to drive from the elbow to the basket?  Well, both Belibi and Dodson did that today.  Steps in the right direction.

I (for one?), didn't. I agree with someone (I don't know who) who said something along the lines of, athletic competition is only meaningful if there is an appreciable risk of losing. Back in those good ole days of conference domination, we did not have a significant risk of loss for most of our conference games. No thrill in attending for me (and I didn't). Now, almost every game's worth watching!

Looks like the 6pm replay is vs UA

Replay vs ASU is 10:30pm Sunday (but from descriptions of our offense it may not be a ratings smash)

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Arizona State 44 - oldalum - 03-01-2020

Comcast shows the 6 pm replay on the national network is vs. ASU, but cut to 1.5 hours. (if we're lucky they'll cut out the fourth quarter :)

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Arizona State 44 - JJJ - 03-01-2020

We did seem to have trouble with their press in 4Q, and attempted ill-advised passes. In the first 3Qs, the passes were pretty. Not sure if the difference was a function of a desperate ASU D, us getting tired, or both (or something else). I'm sure there are lots of teachable moments on film.
Glad we got out of the desert with a split, and that no one else was injured. Good luck with the tourney and finals, team!
