Agreed; the lure of a free graduate degree is real, especially for someone who isn't going to play professionally. But I just want to push back that getting into a Stanford graduate school is necessary for playing a fifth year at Stanford. Plus, I'm guessing that DiJonai will be able to be drafted into the WNBA.

In her interview with the PAC-12 podcast last season, she said she wants to be a forensic criminologist... so, what schools have good grad programs in that? ;)

are you saying that stanford has this rule?
No, I am saying Stanford doesn't have a rule that says you need to be enrolled in graduate school to delay your graduation after 4 years. There are a couple things that you have to do. For example, I think if you take more than 12 quarters, you have to submit an academic plan just to show that you are not going to stay indefinitely. In addition, housing is only guaranteed for four years so you might have to live off campus. For regular students, financial aid might be limited to 12 quarters unless students can show personal or academic circumstances necessitating longer aid.

Based on the following ranking given the comments of her career path, I can see why MD might be in the driver's seat:

Great gain for them if she were to choose MD, and we miss her so already!

The grad transfer rule has now made returning to play a calculation on the part of injured players and puts them in a position of power over their coach. If things are not going right for one reason or another and they have an injury that knocks them out for a while before they have spent their season of eligibility, then they can reserve their eligibility for elsewhere--even if they are physically able to come back. Dodson chose to come back. Carrington did not. I wonder now that the season was cut short whether Dodson feels she made the right choice.
My guess is that Carrington does go to Maryland for the grad program. This way she can get basketball to pay for 5 years of productive education instead of 4. And Maryland has the grad degree she wants and Stanford doesn't. Stretching out her BA doesn't help her in the long run. Remember, these women come to Stanford for the academics too. They don't stop caring about academics when they are seniors.
With Carrington's track record of injuries she has little prospect of a long WNBA career, and so a professionally oriented Master's may be important to her. Her degree choice also fits in with her undergraduate interests and her social activism. And as has been pointed out, the Maryland criminology program is at the top. As I recall, they produce a lot of FBI agents there.
I doubt it has anything to do with Wilson. It just can't be about the money. Tara could give the scholarship to Carrington if she wanted to and Wilson would almost certainly find the money--or grad transfer herself.
And I doubt it has anything to do with basketball opportunities. Stanford will be a much better team next year than Maryland, and Carrington--if she stayed--would have been one of its leaders. Next year promised to be her best year ever in basketball, if she stayed healthy.
Could it be some sort of conflict with the coaches? I suppose. I doubt it though, there has been no sign of that over the last 4 years.
If Carrington does decide to transfer to Maryland, I think it has to be for academic reasons first and foremost.

I thought I would expand a little on Stanford's grad-transfer dilemma.
While many of us understand the cache of the Stanford name, it is also the case that Stanford does not have many applied graduate programs--like criminology, optometry, certain kinds of nursing, etc. which have appealed to some of our WBB graduates over the years. Other applied grad programs, like our MBAs, are incredibly competitive and usually do not take undergraduates straight out of college. In short, Stanford is quite challenged either to retain 5th year students interested in masters degrees or to attract grad transfers.
I doubt that this matters to athletes whose only serious interest is their sport--they can no doubt find a generic MA degree that may be enriching to them but is not going to be particularly oriented toward preparation for a career.
But most of our WBB players are going to want to plan for a career after basketball. Not all can get into an Engineering MS program like Ruef did or the law school the way Kate Paye did, and a lot would not want a generic MA in an academic discipline that does not lead to a profession.
So it could be that the more poly technical universities that offer dozens of applied MA and MS degrees are going to have an easier time capitalizing on the grad transfer rules than we are. And that might partly explain Tara's irritation with the grad transfer rule.

Great observations 81. I do think people underestimate the degree to which the fifth-year option is less viable and/or available for many Stanford student athletes. For example, Marta Sniezek lists on
her linkedin page that her grad degree is a Master's in Non-Profit Management at the Business School. Not only does no such degree exist at Stanford, but as 81 noted, the MBA is insanely competitive to get into, especially straight out of undergrad. And for players who get injured their senior year like Carrington and Sniezek, I don't know that it's overly easy to obtain a fifth-year of undergrad if they were on track to graduate. Unless I'm wrong, I thought the only way you could get a fifth year was if there was an academic need. I guess it's possible you could take on a second major, but otherwise I have to imagine Carrington was so far along the path to graduation by January of her senior year that that route wouldn't be feasible.
Now, apparently Anna Wilson is an Art Practice major. Any idea what grad degree at Stanford would further that field of study?

Stanford has an excellent grad program in art, not just theory and art history. Anna could easily find an art grad program that would work for her.

There are Sr athletes who are in Co term programs. I gather Carrington is not. Wilson could be. Mel Murphy was so she was set for a 5th year
A 5th year for say a winter only sport like XC is easy. Take a class. For a 2 or 3 quarter class not so easy. Track does it often. I’ll have to learn how

Yes, co-terms for sure. But I think that requires more planning ahead, and I thought those had to be declared before senior year began? I was very briefly enrolled in one before realizing it was not for me, and I distinctly remember thinking I had to make that decision before senior year began. Maybe I'm misremembering or that's wrong, or maybe it's program-dependent?
Incidentally,
there does not appear to be a co-term in psychology, which would likely have been the best fit for Carrington.

I'm pretty sure as recently as 3 years ago, you had to be accepted into a co-term program before your senior year began (even if you were accepted, your grades from spring of junior year did make a difference, you couldn't slack off). I do not know if that is still the case.

I thought the 'choice' between Wilson and Carrington might simply have been timing. Wilson asked first before Carrington's injury. So if a commitment was already made, there simply was not another scholie available.

I could be wrong, but I think this has nothing to do with the number of scholarships. Not with Russell making $88 million in 2020 alone.

I recall somewhere that there is a limit on the number of players who are able to travel regardless of how many are on the team. If my memory serves, only 15 players can travel to away games on trips regardless of how much money is available for a player to pay their own way.

We can, sadly, count on one of 16 players being injured at any given moment in time, and if a miracle happened and all were healthy, those least likely to play could alternate on the road trips.
We had 16 on this roster:
https://gostanford.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/2013-14
We were going to carry Ruef as a 16th non scholarship player on that team. I seem to remember she wound up getting a scholarship after all, but clearly having a 16th non scholarship player, like Wilson could be, is feasible.

I think medical retirement is the correct term, quaint or not. It entails giving up the rest of your eligibility and switching to a different type of scholarship that doesn't count against the team maximum scholarships for the sport.
