This would be an error.

Look, Terry's talent is undeniable; and his eventual contributions to a pro franchise are easy to conceive of.  But he would greatly help his case with another year of college ball.  When freshman mistakes are one of the characterizing facets of your most recent full season, you aren't ready.

Of course, and this is considering everything else going into the decision -- he might not think another year in school would give him the proper seasoning, which would be an indictment on the coaching quality in the program.

I don't get this at all.    Fun to watch and very promising plus a few assassin moments, but also many opportunities missed.    Hoping (expecting?) after further thought and research he continues his student-athlete journey on the Farm for at least a bit longer.

Nope. Don't sweat the things that you have no control over. Hard knocks school of growing old.

What if there is no "athlete" part of that journey next year?

If the NBA goes and NCAA does not, I would accept that logic although I still don't see him as being "ready".

Well, even so, a few years down the road there's a reasonable chance he might still be wishing there had been a "student" part next year [and a year or two after that, as well]...

I also hope he decides to come back. I'd like to believe that would be a win-win situation.

Not to start thread drift, but this article of "top available grad transfers" caught my eye. Includes Harvard and Yale players but no one linked to Stanford as a destination.

Well...the Ringer lists Terry 8th best among all players for the 2020 draft.  https://nbadraft.theringer.com/

Quote:
  • Elite shooter with a quick, high release. He can run off screens and find his balance midair (48 percent on catch-and-shoot 3s), or unload off-the-dribble jumpers from deep behind the arc (32 percent).
  • Advanced off-ball movement: He manipulates defenders with pivots and fakes to get himself open. The Curry family would be proud of his tendency to relocate for corner 3s after giving up the ball.
  • Crafty interior finisher with an expansive layup package. He has a keen sense for how to contort his body on layup attempts, and the soft touch to score from awkward angles or against contact.
  • Makes an impact in the pick-and-roll. He has the burst to turn the corner and generally makes smart decisions when deciding whether to shoot or pass.
  • Solid passer who can make fundamental plays, plus the more advanced ones like whips to 3-point shooters and wrap-arounds to rolling bigs.
  • Competitive defender who will take a charge and dive for loose balls. On switches, he’ll try to battle against bigger players.

I had heard O'Connor praise Terry on a couple of podcasts, but putting him 8th was a surprise. If it is indicative of genuine NBA interest then I can't see him staying.

Terry nowhere on this mock draft:

https://www.nbadraft.net/ranking/bigboard/

He shows up as #40 (up 11 from previous ranking) on this Big Board. This site says it was updated on 12/27/2019 and he appears to be on the radar of some scouts even back in December. I suspect this board will get updated several times in the next couple months and we'll see where he is consistently ranked.

Posted this on another thread and was told to send it here:

Writer here sees Terry as a first round pick.

He better get a whole lot stronger.  He got pushed around in Pac-12. He will be eaten alive in NBA.

RE: MBB: Terry declares for the draft - magnus - 04-29-2020

The Athletic (paywall) has a new article on him with some quotes from Terry.

Quote:“I’m trying to look for information that favors me, to try to figure out if it’s better for me to come out this year or next year,” Terry said. “There are certain things I’m looking for specifically, but I’m confident in my ability to play at the next level right now. My intentions are to stay in this draft, but with the new rules, it would be irresponsible for me not to take advantage of maintaining my eligibility. But at the moment, my intentions are to stay in this draft.”

So looks like if the opportunity is not there,  he's open to returning.

RE: MBB: Terry declares for the draft - JJJ - 04-29-2020

Thanks for the heads up of the Terry piece. I was looking for pro vs con of staying and not having a proper season or having a year of nothing but hoops, which may be the next article on him. :)

Didn’t quite realize he was on pace to graduate in 3 years!

RE: MBB: Terry declares for the draft - Snorlax94 - 07-12-2020

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but I only thought to check back on this topic tonight.

With the moving of the NBA draft, which didn’t happen two weeks ago, does this mean that Terry has until October 6 to decide whether or not to withdraw from the draft?

So, hypothetically speaking, if it looks like college basketball is going to happen this winter, and the draft doesn’t look great, he could return?

If college basketball looks unlikely this coming season, I expect few if any to return to school. Might as well get paid to develop

100% on staying in the draft. Sure money vs big question mark.

100% on letting HS kids skip college if they can be drafted but there should be skilled observers hired by the NBA to advise.

Been an issue for decades.  Warren Coolidge, in a 1978 episode of the White Shadow is tempted by a pro contract...

Don’t know anything about the authors but they have Terry going 13th in this mock draft, fwliw. I’ve always thought these things had too many moving parts to be of much worth beyond giving us something to do on a slow day.
