switching gears a bit on this thread, a friend just sent over this link claiming a mutation related to the "spikes" that could frustrate vaccine efforts.   Curious if anyone has seen anything more rigorous on this specific topic?

UW virology researcher Trevor Bedford estimated a few weeks ago that mutations that could alter immunity or response to vaccine would likely take several years.

It is certainly a risk. But mutations can also reduce lethality, though given degree of presymptomayic spread this won't happen any time soon if at all.

Genuine question, have you actually seen anyone saying those things? Because I sure haven't, least of all on here.

But, even if you had, I think it just shows how asinine this whole thing is. Like, if I were a sociopath who didn't care about the human consequences of this but just wanted it to be as bad for Trump as possible, I'd want swing states to reopen ASAP. There's loads of evidence that premature reopening is worse economically than staying closed (here's just one article on it from yesterday that has a good overview, from a Stanford alum no less), and the virus preferentially attacks Republican constituencies (primarily older people). If all I cared about was winning in November, I would desperately want Florida to stay open, collapse their healthcare system, savage their economy, and lose a large fraction of their older, more Republican voters.

But I'm not a sociopath, so I've been aghast at their response so far. Hopefully it works out for them, but I'm not optimistic, and they're at least moving in the right direction.
