Went hiking this afternoon with my daughter in the Berkeley hills (Tilden) and a good 1/2 the people had no masks. Not on, and not on their person.

I was out for a walk last night without a mask.  No one around, but that didn't stop people in two different cars from slowing down and yelling at me... ;)

In my neighborhood most people out and about don't wear a mask while walking.  People are good about maintaining social distancing, even going into the street to maintain a 6+ foot radius.  I wear a mask mostly as an advertisment to others to maintain social distancing, but I could easily go out without one and not get dirty looks.

I've noticed that restaurants and other enclosed locations have started requiring facial coverings for entry.  I had to go to the bank on Friday, and it required face masks, which is a far cry from the pre-COVID-19 days when facial coverings were prohibited in banks due to concern about robberies.

I've heard of some banks where the guard makes you pull down your mask and look at the camera before you're allowed to enter. Seems like a reasonable compromise.

Do they give you hand sanitizer after you touch your mask because your hands are more potentially "dirty"?

Speaking of which,  for all those that carry a mask with them,  do you take extra care handling the mask after each use?

RE: What is happening in Southern California? - BostonCard - 04-26-2020

I use the mask to protect other people from me.  Though I have no reason to believe that I would be COVID-19 positive, there is a small possibility that I have the virus and don't know it.  They are most effective in preventing someone who is sick from generating droplets.  The second purpose is to remind everyone else that we are in the midst of a pandemic so that everyone maintains their distance.  The third purpose is to remind me not to touch my face.  I think they are probably not very helpful if I come into direct prolonged contact with someone who is sick.

For that reason, I don't worry about a "dirty" mask.  I'd feel differently if I were a healthcare worker.

And for what it's worth, both the bank and the restaurant I went to for take out had hand sanitizer available for customers (even without making me take off my mask).

RE: What is happening in Southern California? - stupac2 - 04-26-2020

I'm with BC, for everyday use I'm not touching anything that someone else may have touched recently (I suppose unless I get tremendously unlucky and someone else has just touched the tree branch I grabbed for balance in the creek) so I don't worry about it. This is just a random stretchy cloth thing my mom sent us unannounced, not an N95 or anything. If I'm going to the grocery store or another place where touching shared surfaces is unavoidable then I wear gloves and don't touch anything on myself with my hands.

It's a good point about the bank, but I'm not really sure if there's any way around it. Maybe Asian countries where masks are more common have a procedure for this, I have no idea. (I also couldn't tell you the last time I set foot in a bank, fwiw.)

That's funny.  Six weeks ago, I got on a plane where I was the only one wearing an N95 mask.  As I boarded, a first-class passenger jumped in front of me, clearly intending to impede my progress.  She demanded "Are you sick?"  I said no, this is preventive, at which point she let me pass.

Now, it's the opposite.  If you're not  wearing the mask, people flip out.  Crazy.

RE: What is happening in Southern California? - dabigv13 - 04-26-2020

It's something that works best if everyone does it. People need to get that altruistic message. Unfortunately not sure how well that moves behavior, so why I think requiring masking indoors or if unable to maintain distancing should be legally mandated. If we're going to try reopening without good test and trace, we will definitely need to do everything possible to keep Ro down to give us enough lead time to shut things down if necessary.

I personally just wear a bandana, and I don't really worry too much about touching it, when I'm out and about. It's mostly to trap my own respiratory droplets anyway.

At work I am very careful to only handle my mask by the loops or straps and I wash before and after touching when I store them.

Looks like the throngs of visitors that showed up at several LA and SD area beaches have caused the governor to close all beaches (and state parks) starting Friday.

Birthday party with extended family members after shelter in home was in effect.  One participant had a cough.   More than 5 have since been diagnosed.

Silverlining?  Contact tracing worked.

Deaths and infections in Southern California continue to grow despite completing our 5th week of shutdown.  Over half of California's deaths and cases are in LA County (it makes up 25% of the state's population), California's highest death rate per 100K is LA county, and LA's death rate continues to climb long after the Bay Area death rate has stabilized.
....
https://www.latimes.com/projects/california-coronavirus-cases-tracking-outbreak/los-angeles-county/

What are we at now, 10th or 11th week?   11th verse, same as the first.

Quote:Over the past two weeks, Los Angeles County has recorded 17,590 new cases, failing one of the governor’s performance metrics. In that time, 522 deaths have been reported.

Over the past week, the county has averaged 1,356 new cases and 41.1 new deaths per day. The number of confirmed infections is currently doubling every 27.2 days.

One metric is whether counties have kept the number of new cases reported over the last 14 days to less than 25 per 100,000 residents.
Los Angeles County currently fails that test. Over the last two weeks, officials have confirmed 17,590 new cases, which amounts to 174.2 per 100,000.

Wow, doubling every month.  Why, in a year, that's an increase of over 4,000x.  If it could be sustained that long, that would amount to 2/3 of the population of the US having COVID-19 in Los Angeles County alone,  by the end of May 2021.

Orange County is just as exponential, just smaller.

Orange County currently fails that test. Over the last two weeks, officials have confirmed 2,074 new cases, which amounts to 65.5 per 100,000.

I have a next door neighbor in Santa Clara County, who is having his 2nd multi-family gathering within the last week.  Is that what's going on in L.A.?

(I'd attach the graphs, but attachments have never worked; But exponential line spacing surely does. Sigh)

That's the kind of stuff that is spreading it, that's for sure. Stupid and selfish.

Well, that, and massive crowds, shoulder to shoulder, roaming the streets of major cities for hours while yelling loudly through marginally effective face coverings...

Interestingly, given the truly harsh things repeatedly directed at church goers and peaceful protesters a few weeks back, virtually nothing has been mentioned here about the more recent activities.  Perhaps we have a growing consensus that First Amendment rights are more worthy of consideration during the pandemic than previously admitted.

I was wondering about the lack of "late breaking" posts.  I figured maybe many were like me...so much going on in the world, that it's hard to continue to focus so much on any one topic.  And perhaps, some fatigue as well.

For sure, the MSM has pushed anything Coronavirus related way way down in their coverage, almost to the point you have to hunt for it to find it.

Rachel Maddow dedicated part of her A block to Covid on June 3. It hasn’t gone away, but she made clear the federal government is acting like it has. That is bad news for everyone. It sure will be fun to see what happens if a new spike that is similar to Sept. 1918 manifests in a few months, won’t it?

One instructive note. Sweden reported 2,200 new cases yesterday. Finland 22.

RE: What is happening in Southern California? - 2006alum - 06-04-2020

I can only speak for myself, but I haven't said anything here because (a) I'm totally emotionally worn down and dismayed by the past week; and (b) what I'd say would be 98% political and 2% about the virus. Mindful of the Terry Rule, it just didn't seem worth it.

I will say this though: between the pandemic and our utterly vacant leadership ("where are you?"), it's beginning to feel like we live in a failed state -- to the point that several of my international Stanford undergrad friends from "developing" countries have reached out to ask if the U.S. is going to be OK. It's dismaying to answer I'm really not sure at the moment.

Indoors vs. outdoors.  Evidence for outdoor transmission is quite minimal at this point.  That could change after the protests, but we don't know yet.

And I've seen lots and lots written with concerns about virus transmission among protestors.  Even the liberal NY Times ran an article on that several days back.

You really need to put liberal in air quotes there, dude. That rag gave "Senator" Tom Cotton a platform to say he believes the United States military should kill American citizens for exercising their First Amendment rights.

Weren't soccer matches key superspreader events in Italy and Spain? I'm not sure what distinguishes a protest from a match, if anything it seems like a protest could be worse. The only potential saving grace is widespread mask usage.

We'll probably start finding out if it's an issue in a few days, maybe a week.

RE: What is happening in Southern California? - dabigv13 - 06-04-2020

Another issue is the fact that protests are events some people come back to day after day, not just a one time event like a soccer match.

Hopefully masks and the relative youth of the protestors reduces the possible risks, but no bueno to have civil unrest in the middle of a pandemic, no sir.

Yeah, sorry, that was a bit of sarcasm.  I was a subscriber for over a decade but cancelled last year because of that sort of thing.
