I think California will do better when it comes to masks. I imagine most retail outlets will require them, particularly since I think there's a much higher number of people who want to shop at a store that require masks, than people who would refuse to shop at a store that requires masks.

Could Face Shields Be the New Masks?
(For *Outdoor* Activities)

I was wondering about outdoor dining at restaurants (when that is permitted) and thought, if we shift activities outdoors, isn’t the concern just large droplets? And if so, in many ways, wouldn’t face shields be better than masks?

They protect the eyes (I wonder whether some Asian countries and some places like the Czech Republic are doing better because more people wear glasses vs contacts), you only need one (addressing shortage issues, plus a YouTuber shows how to make one out of a 2-liter soda bottle), you can dine with one on, and people might be more willing to wear one socially because others can still see your face.

The main drawbacks I can think of are that they would do less for aerosols and they probably wouldn’t do as much for source control as masks (Yesterday I sneezed with my mask on during a walk and yes, it traps a LOT of the sneeze in).

Thoughts?

I don’t think they’d replace masks — maybe wear both when shopping indoors, but I could see them being especially useful if dining outside or when socializing with friends.

A recent JAMA opinion article recently suggested this:

I'm pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong) that eyes are not a significant entry point for viral particles.

Masks are the quickest effective solution to getting this under control if the economy re-opens, and still people want to protest.  To borrow a quote from Letterkenny, "Oh get off the cross.  We need the wood."

No, my intent was to point out where actions are happening, not generalizing people by state. There are way more responsible people everywhere, including Michigan and Oklahoma than irresponsible.

The mask wearing defiance is the dumbest thing I’ve seen from people in a real long time. It almost reminds me of this:

RE: Effectiveness of masks - Snorlax94 - 05-04-2020

We have gone from people  protesting they have they have the right to violate health orders, by democratically elected officials, intended to protect the public health, to people protesting with guns, to people abusing staff while brandishing guns, and now we have sunk to murder. As I said before, I worry the US will be uniquely incapable of avoiding an Italy-style collapse, with even a possibility of a broad collapse of social order. Coming back to murder a security guard? Because they required masks???

Security guard fatally shot in Michigan while telling shoppers to wear masks

A Family Dollar store security guard was fatally shot in Flint, Michigan, on Friday after telling a customer her child had to wear a face mask to enter the store, prosecutors said.

An argument began when the security guard, Calvin Munerlyn, 43, told Sharmel Lashe Teague, 45, that customers needed to wear face masks in the store, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said at a Monday news conference. She yelled at him, spit on him and drove off, Leyton said. About 20 minutes later, her car returned to the store and her husband and son, Larry Edward Teague, 44, and Ramonyea Travon Bishop, 23, stepped out and confronted Munerlyn, according to investigators who spoke to witnesses in the store and reviewed surveillance video. Bishop shot him, Leyton said.

Leyton said Munerlyn was doing his job, protecting others and enforcing a statewide executive order. In Michigan, people are required to wear face coverings in businesses. Stores can refuse service to anyone who isn't wearing a mask.

If you're going to stand right next to multiple strangers, what's the point of wearing a mask? (perhaps to avoid recognition?)

I kinda hope that these people all live together.  All the sacrifices that people have made these last few weeks to lower the new case count and avoid healthcare overrun and all you need is one super spreader in this group and the toil/sacrifice will all be for naught.

Don't get me wrong, I understand protesting and feeling that the government overreached. But by congregating so tightly, it means these folks don't believe the virus is a threat. Alas.

My congressman just announced masks aren’t necessary. Good ole McClintock

This seems like where we are headed:

Quote:The coronavirus scenario I can’t stop thinking about is the one where we simply get used to all the dying.

I first saw it on Twitter. “Someone poke holes in this scenario,” a tweet from Eric Nelson, the editorial director of Broadside Books, read. “We keep losing 1,000 to 2,000 a day to coronavirus. People get used to it. We get less vigilant as it very slowly spreads. By December we’re close to normal, but still losing 1,500 a day, and as we tick past 300,000 dead, most people aren’t concerned.”

2000 a day is while we've been actively trying to lower the count.   We're likely not going to be any more cautious than we were a week or two ago which means our number is likely to increase before it hits a new plateau (unless it doesn't plateau).

So it's possible we'll be getting desensitized to a higher number by the end of the month.

RE: Effectiveness of masks - dabigv13 - 05-06-2020

I think the desensitization is a real problem. But I suspect that if an area relaxes too much, it will see NYC like spikes. Pretty difficult to truly allow for a slow burn without overshooting into a big spike. When your local hospital has bodies in the hallways, I suspect/hope that will break through the desensitization.

RE: Effectiveness of masks - fullmetal - 05-06-2020

One would hope.  But I remember the NYC "citizen reporter" videos attempting to show no signs of activity around NYC area hospitals.  There are always grifters looking to make a quick Google ad revenue buck off of Youtube videos in the support of any popular/controversial cause.

Growing up, I remember on the nightly news, the anchor intoning the latest count of Vietnam War casualties each and every night. Then, while a student at Stanford, the number of days Americans had been held hostage in Iran. Maybe with social media, we're less influenced than we would be if it were still just the three networks but hard for me to imagine us all becoming desensitized with the unrelentingly growing toll.
