Cardinal Duck also passed and the great Steve Durrett is no longer with us. Both mainstays on the Boot. McGrath still going strong down in San Juan although has parted with his goats but still is the spiritual father of Rory McElroy.

Cardinal Duck was a very good friend. I stayed with him in Eugene for many track meets

Thanks Terry on GHC. I was afraid of this

Don't miss the boorish loudmouths over there. Left it years ago and never looked back.

I love that we keep the politics out of here. Plenty of other places on the web if that's what you want.

To the CEB and the thunderdome.
Dennis was a good friend died a year and a half ago.  I haven’t talked to gray haired in several years.

A number of us including Phogge would get together for lunch.  Fun even though I was the only liberal.  But all jabs in fun at lunch

Very sorry to hear about Dennis.  We locked horns many a time. But I think gained a measure of respect for each other despite our differences.  Which is how it should be.  But alas....

As one of the loudmouths (hopefully not boorish...) I enjoyed it.  At times some very good discussions.   It does get over the top at times.  But I take  that largely with a grain of salt. BTW - slight correction - it now exists only for Bootleg subscribers on the Premium Board.

Having said that,  I very much like like that this board is mostly apolitical.

Seems like no posts for a year, at least until the most recent one announcing the demise of the t-dome.

Yes, he was a good guy. His passing was a real loss.

I’m also very sorry to hear that. We had lunch together one time when he was up from SB for some Stanford sports event, and I really enjoyed his company. I have found myself wondering about him recently. Rats.

One of the nicest human being I ever met.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - akiddoc - 06-10-2020

I had not looked at T-dome for a while. I looked at it about a week ago and frankly, it was filled with barely disguised racist drivel. I couldn't believe Abeytia was allowing it to continue. I just looked again it appears that people are still posting if they are members of the Bootleg. I'm not sure because I dropped my membership a couple of years ago when the owner refused to get rid of the blatantly racist posts.

There was a time that the CEB was a good place to express political and other ideas. It was invaded by racists and was no longer a place where ideas could be exchanged.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - murky - 06-11-2020

I sorely miss the CEB back in its prime.

I enjoy benefiting from the perspective of Stanford alumni and fans.  There was much excellent free content generated by members to read, and occasionally reply to - not to mention many excellent links shared that had little or nothing to do with Stanford.

The last straw for me wasn't the discussions, its when a new format took over which indiscriminately wiped out my private message history without warning or recourse.  I had cherished exchanges there with other members, some former player parents.   Some connections of handles to real life that I knew I could refer back to if I didn't always remember.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - Phogge - 06-11-2020

With all due respect to the kid Doc I think the problem was more with the yelling online.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - 81alum - 06-11-2020

As a political scientist I think the evidence is insurmountable that the internet has contributed to polarization and incivility in our political discourse.  We absolutely need the left and the right to talk to each other--and the lack of such communication and shared understanding is behind our nation's inability to solve critical problems in a way that most people can support.  But the internet encourages discourse without responsibility.  When you put your own face and your own name behind a statement in front of people you know and who will see you again--there is a level of accountability that encourages you to be truthful, polite, and understanding of other people.  On the other hand, when you make a statement using a pseudonym to other people using pseudonyms there is very little accountability.

It reminds me of the driver on the freeway who cuts you off aggressively, only to find out that you are both going to the same place.  When you both get out of your cars and face each and realize you are acquainted, there is a sheepish apology.

I do think we need to come up with ways for difficult conversations to happen between people who come from different ideologies.  The internet is the last place this will occur.  Partners in such conversations need to be face-to-face, where they can read body language, understand the sincerity, grief, or empathy of the other person, and moderate their own tone on the basis of the visual cues that come back from the other person.

Bob's example of left and right getting along, with a sense of humor, at a social setting is exactly what I mean.  Take someone with a different ideology out for a beer (six feet apart?)  Don't talk to them on a chat forum.

By the way, this is exactly why online education fails spectacularly at certain subjects.

And it is also the reason I fully support the Cardboard's ban on political discussions.  But send me a private message and we can get together to talk :)

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - Phogge - 06-11-2020

I thoroughly endorse the beer idea.

I only met the DOC once in person; he was very different than his online persona.

Fantastic post.  Thank you. Internet.  24/7 news stations with ideological bents.  Landslide districts. The ideological bubbles we live in.  Troubling to say the least.

Jonathan Haidt.  “The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Poltics and Religion.”  Terrific read on the polarization of which you speak.

I have it on good authority that the CEB was shut down due to racist posts by three particular posters. Unfortunately the site's owner wouldn't ban those posters.

He wasn't the cause of the shut down.

He was reasonable when PM'ed. A blowhard on the board.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - Nan3cy - 06-11-2020

I’m finding this discussion particularly interesting because of an unfortunate thread on Nextdoor tonight started by a complaint that someone’s Trump yard sign had been stolen (multiple signs stolen multiple times). The resulting “discussion” (read: scores of ad hominem attacks and people talking past each other) was depressing, to say the least.

Didn’t mean to imply he was; just using him as an example of someone whose message board character was different than in private, as you point out, supporting 81alum’s contention.

I think next door should change its tag line to “when neighbors start talking... hilarity ensues”

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - Phogge - 06-12-2020

Actually Kidd Scout banished the site to Premies only and it was one poster who in the past left an anti-Semitic blast and who made a comment about BLM this time. Was it was racist? Matter of interpretation but it was stupid to post anything like it during the Floyd era. Was the board full of racists? I think not. Perhaps one or two. Anyway the axing of TDome was coming. It only needed a spark.

I love his line, “I may not be right but I’m never wrong.”
