I used to pal around with one of the Giants' outfielders from the mid-1960s to early 1970s (his son played ball with my son). Great guy.  He always said about the 1960s Giants' teams that they were always one starting pitcher short of being in the World Series every year.

McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal, Perry, White, Brandt, Cardenal, Pagan, Hart, Haller, the Alou's, Mota, Foster, Goodson, Kingman, Speier, Kirkland, Wagner, Maddox, Matthews, others.

And still no WC and only one pennant.

1968 was probably their best draft.  They picked Foster, Maddox and Matthews in the first three picks, all southern california outfielders.  All gone within a decade.

And i’d pal around with a Giant Cy Young winner :)

Mike McCormick, no doubt.  Incredibly ironic that he won one and Juan did not

Yes. Yes to both

RE: MLB draft - Phogge - 06-13-2020

Some guy named Koufax seemed to always be in the way.

RE: MLB draft - Mick - 06-13-2020

Marichal's two best years were 1963 and 1968.

In 1968, Koufax (25-5, 1.88 ERA, 0.875 WHIP) clearly had the better year over Marichal (25-8, 2.41 ERA, 0.996 WHIP).  And in 1968, Bob Gibson had the amazing year (22-9, 1.12 ERA, 0.853 WHIP) though Marichal had a better winning percentage (26-9, 2.43 ERA, 1.047 WHIP).  Same was true in 1966 when Marichal went 25-6 and 2.23 ERA, but Koufax (in his last year) went 27-9 with a 1.73 ERA.

The year McCormick won was a real oddity. Koufax had retired. The NL starters that won 20+ games also lost a lot of games.  McCormick, Fergie Jenkins and Jim Bunning all lost at least 10 games (McCormick lost the fewest, he was 22-10), and the pitchers with great W/L records didn't win more than 16 games (Gibson, Briles, Hughes).  Niekro had the best ERA, but went 11-9.  McCormick wasn't in the top 10 in ERA, but both Perry and Marichal were. Gaylord Perry went 15-17, Juan Marichal went 14-10, the hated Sadecki had a good year at 12-6.  Giants finished 2nd at 91-71, for the 7th time in the 1960s.

McCormick won 18 Cy Young votes, Jenkins and Bunning received one each.  The best pitcher might actually have been Ted Abernathy (6-3, 1.27 ERA, led league in saves with 28 and appearances with 70).

The best pitcher in baseball in 1967 was Stanford's own Jim Lonborg, at 22-9 and AL Cy Young winner.

RE: MLB draft - Phogge - 06-13-2020

McCormick was one of the original “Bonus Babies.” That meant that he had to be on the MLB roster in his rookie year. In 1962 the Giants had signed Santa Clara’s Bob Garibaldi to a bonus contract and thus was on the roster his first year. Neither guy got to pitch much and it stunted their professional growth. Garibaldi hurt his arm and disappeared except for a September callup in 1969. McCormick was on the cusp of a great career in 1961 and all of a sudden his fastball disappeared. Traded to the O’s the Giants got him back and he had the miracle 1967 year. Never got close again.

RE: MLB draft - BobK - 06-13-2020

In the Minors Garibaldi was 85-69. A Shame he never really made the majors.
Great basketball ref.

So non drafted players can sign on Monday and the Giants expect to go all out

Nor were any players from the current roster. So Beck will definitely be back next year and presumably Tawa will be as well.

Or maybe not Mr. Tawa. Not a good day on the Twittersphere for Tim. I won’t repeat or weigh in on the credibility of the allegations against him but they’re out there and people are going to start digging. The tweet I found rather easily already had 2K likes or retweets including one from an editor at The Daily seeking more info.

To close the loop on this, the accuser has since come out saying they had misinformation and that Tawa was not involved in any wrongdoing. Feel horrible for him that he had to endure this at the same time as dealing with the stress of the draft. My apologies for my role in spreading rumors. Social media at its worst.

Garibaldi was interesting for two reasons: first, his career minor league ERA (3.79) was more than his career major league ERA (3.08).  Second, Bob didn't play below AAA in the minors.  Played in eight full seasons (and parts of two others) for Tacoma, Phoenix and Hawaii (as Jim Bouton said in "Ball Four", if players wanted to stay on the Hawaii team and not get called up, they should be able to do so).  Garibaldi was actually 96-81 in those eight seasons:

As for the Giants' draft...I believe I understand what Farhan was trying to do.  I think he was looking for high floor rather than high ceiling players.  He's got lots of old, expensive players on his roster (Posey, Belt, Crawford, Longoria, Samardzija, Cueto) .  Samardzija comes off after this year, Longoria comes off after 2022, the rest come off after 2021.  I believe Farhan drafted for players with high floors (six of their seven were college picks), with the idea that these (or other players in the system) will replace the six expensive players.  And starting Monday, the Giants will be signing a ton of high school players who have the high ceilings, so to speak.

RE: MLB draft - Phogge - 06-14-2020

Garibaldi got his last Giants start during the final week in 1969 when I was working for the club. He was tossing balloons up to the plate. I still think his all out effort in the CWS cost him a much better career.

RE: MLB draft - BobK - 06-14-2020

The $20K signing parade going on now.

Honestly wonder if that was true for Lincecum at Washington.  He threw a ridiculous amount of pitches there.  Look at both his strikeouts and walks...both brobdingnagian numbers.  I'd read that he'd gone over 140 pitches on more than one occasion there.

I don’t think it was uncommon years ago for colleges to grossly overuse their ace.

I can't imagine that any high school players with high ceilings (or medium ceilings) will sign for $20k. Any legitimate HS prospect can enroll in a JC and then enter the draft in a year and receive a substantially higher bonus. The HS prospects who weren't drafted this week were passed on because their bonus demands were above slot, so they aren't going to sign for 5% of slot.

You're probably right.  I can only find one that the Giants have signed, and he was a senior at North Carolina Central.  Decent stats:

There will be some decent college players who sign, but it makes no sense for high school players who are legitimate prospects to sign for $20k now.

They can’t sign “a ton” of guys because each $20K paid out is taken from SF’s signing pool.  They will be very judicious is signing undrafted players regardless of whether they are HS, JC or college guys.
