Night games at Buck Shaw brought out a bunch of drunk five foot tall Bronco fans who should have been doing their homework in the dorms. The taunts were were so explicit driven and sophomoric that instead of pissing us off it loosened us up. We called them the Leprechauns. We finally knocked off the top 10 ranked Broncs one night and had a happy ride back to Lake Merced.

Sounds about right.

Just about the time that SCU decided to shelve football, I remember a close football game against SCU's rival at Buck Shaw, won by St. Mary's in the last few minutes.  The visitor stands were portable and right on the field, and the St. Mary's fans clearly intended to tear down the east goalpost.  SCU had hired 16 rent a cops, and 14 of them, along with about 150 SCU fans surrounded said goalpost.  Game ends, St. Mary's fans rush the field, lots of fistfights all over.  After about five minutes, the St. Mary's fans employ their rigid Logic classes and realize there's another goalpost with just two rent-a-cops and no SCU students around it just 120 yards away, so the mass of students both SCU and St. Mary's Junior College rush to that end.  In the end, neither goalpost goes down.

The fistfights spread to stands and between fans.  The stands emptied and there is a true melee on the field and in the parking lot.  Police called from Santa Clara, San Jose, Campbell.  Lasts nearly an hour after the game.

I noticed in the far end zone an alum standing alone in the top row, a former DB and one of the more impressive PED users I'd ever known back when he was a player.  Today he's a very successful head of sales at one of the large tech distribution companies.  I walked over and said "Tim, I thought you'd be in the middle of all this."  He shook his head sadly and said, "my wife told me she wouldn't bail me out of jail again."

Ah, memories of Buck Shaw stadium.  The new Steve Schott stadium clearly tried to emulate the beauty of Sunken Diamond, but the CalTrain and condo background reduces the experience somewhat.  Still, it's a nice place to play, and I look forward to the Stanford v. SCU baseball games, when and if they ever happen again.

So who was the Head Coach when St Mary’s dropped football ?

Former Stanford stud running back and heir apparent to Darren Nelson, Vince White was the head coach.  He still holds the record for most receptions in a game with 14 (tied with Eric Cross, Brad Muster and Jim Price)

I had a nice interaction with Vince when I was at SCU.  My close friend was the school's social VP, so I worked all the concerts.  Vince, who was two years ahead of me, had a class at Stanford that involved working concerts.  At the time, SCU didn't have classes on Wednesdays on the theory that it was supposed to be a day dedicated to quiet, thoughtful contemplation, which I suppose it was if nursing a hangover = quiet, thoughtful contemplation.

Tuesday nights were party nights at SCU and Tuesdays offered a good midweek payday for some pretty terrific bands. At the time, there was a local SFBA club band called "Huey Lewis and the News," and their first big hit "Workin' for a Livin'" had just come out.  Vince and I and a few other Stanford and SCU students worked a variety of tasks around the concert.  Remember, to this point, the biggest crowds that had seen Huey Lewis were a few hundred people in a Bay Area club.  That night, there were 6,000 people in Toso Pavilion, and as HL&N launched into "Workin for a Livin" the crowd shook the roof.  Vince and I were sitting on the back of the stage, and an obviously delighted Huey turns around when the instrumental portion begins and screams at his drummer "can you fxxxing believe this?!?!"

Nice night, one of my better memories.  And Vince was a terrific guy. And I like him all the more because he's coaching football at Fordham, the SCU of the East...

Who was once VDub’s RB coach in Moraga for one year. Hint: Stanford guy.

RE: 49er Trivia - BobK - 09-04-2020

Dot? Mike Dotterer?

RE: 49er Trivia - Phogge - 09-04-2020

Yep. THE Dot.

RE: 49er Trivia - Papa John - 09-04-2020

Vincent White had a jaw-dropping punt return and Mike Dotterer had some nice runs versus #1 UW in 1982. I was there. Then the apocalypse happened in Strawberry Canyon three weeks later. I was also there.

Not as interesting as Mick's Christian Brothers versus Jesuit war stories, though...

RE: 49er Trivia - BobK - 09-04-2020

I was there for both also.

Mick is from Sacramento?

RE: 49er Trivia - Phogge - 09-04-2020

The all time SF brawl was the Brothers of SH and the Jesuits of SI at Kezar Pavilion during the playoff championship in '62. Russ Gumina of SH stole the ball and was on a breakaway when Ed Doran ran him down and tackled him at the foul line. A melee ensued on the court with collared clerics trying to stop the skirmishes. Ultimately order was restored, nobody was thrown out and SI won setting up a special playoff with the Irish who had won the round robin. Alas they edged us and went to the TOC where they lost in the final to Joe Ellis led McClymonds.

The SCU brawl story with rental security reminds me of a few Big Games, and one in particular at Cal.  Stanford was in the midst of a winning streak (Willingham years?) and won the game at Cal.  A small but not tiny - I'd estimate 500 or so - group of Stanford fans spilled out into the end zone in front of Stanford section.  UnhappyCalMob, in much larger numbers, came toward them in a wave.  All that stood between them was a line of yellow-jacket wearing "security guards."  There were some fisticuffs thrown on the border, with the yellow coats caught in the middle.

I distinctly remember watching that unfold and turning to my buddy and saying "the security guys are not getting paid nearly enough for this $hit."  It was ugly.

And I'm pretty sure that was the last Big Game I have attended at Cal.  Just not worth the angst/bitterness, takes all the joy out of the game.  But maybe now that Cal has the Axe (after a too-long drought) - and given that I expect them to hold it for a while - maybe it will be more civil up there.  It is a great place to watch a college football game, so I'd like to attend again before kicking.

RE: 49er Trivia - Phogge - 09-04-2020

You here about crap from the home team fans all the time. Perhaps the worst is at Hawaii games. Lots of threatening looks and gestures from some very big people. The Cal problem is the cadre of 150 pound shirtless dicks who define their toughness in strength of numbers. One on one most would run home. I actually find the Trojan crowd much more enjoyable to be around and they have such mystified countenances when they get drubbed by Stanford. Almost apologizing when they lose.

Sorry for the confusion, BobK. The Christian Brothers run Saint Mary's and the Jesuits run Santa Clara. I was referring to Mick's stories about that rivalry.

Phogge must have been referring to Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Christian Brothers) and Saint Ignatius College Prep (Jesuit) in San Francisco? At least I think that's what he meant by SH and SI.
