Most will probably be fine. But some will not. How many people get it will dictate how many end up with problems. And of course these folks play a game with well known concussion risks. So I'm sure the number skipping for health reasons will be low in any case.
So, the story is, some got real sick but recovered. And there may be some “long term effects”. May be. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t bronchitis scar lungs a bit. Isn’t that a “long term effect”. Pneumonia definitely does. PEDS have long term effects. Concussions have long term effects. Drinking. Sex. Heck, living has long term effects. Perhaps we should just stayed locked in our rooms.....

My perspective is perhaps a bit different because the folks I see with this have been through a war with it. New development, starting to see some of the folks who got off vents months ago but now have very difficult to surgically correct vocal cord problems from having a tube in their throats for a long time. Reducing the number of people who get this disease should be our guiding principle, even if most people who get it will probably be fine long term. This is a new disease we don't fully understand. Humility is smart when dealing with it IMHO.

Getting this back on topic...
This thread's subject might more accurately be changed to "College football should not be played this year" or "Should college football be played this year." Because as much as everyone on the outside isn't believing the games will actually be played, and well over half of people polled don't think it should be, it sure doesn't look like anything is stopping P5 conferences from playing games if they get the safety concerns ironed out with the athletes.
Of course, ESPN has yet to run a single promo for a 2020 college football season game that I have seen, which might be the biggest leading indicator we have. This could be out of an abundance of caution, but the fact is we are less than a month from the first scheduled game, and the conferences appear to be full speed ahead.

The MAC decision puts holes in the OOC schedules of AAC members Pitt, Boston College, and Notre Dame.

The NCAA could make life a bit easier by not only cancelling the upcoming football season but most if not all other fall sports. As far as the $$$ impact on college athletic programs, the NCAA in concert with the NFL, NBA, MLB, Amazon, Musk, Apple, Google and the rest of the tech gang should be able to cobble together some sort of financial support and maybe Wall Street could help just for grins. I would hate to be in the shoes of a university president or an athletic director who would like to see fall sports cancelled, but have not been able to secure the necessary support from the administration/board of trustees.
I have two family members who both recently retired from teaching and doing research at the university level in computer science/GIS/information systems/AI and in bio-medical research (cancer/Aids/Ebola). Both have serious autoimmune conditions and would have taken early retirement had they not retired. Both expressed the concern of the potential for this virus to decimate the scientific and medical communities, especially those groups of individuals who work in the university teaching and research environment. Many of the senior members in these professions have existing medical conditions which when coupled with this virus will most likely kill them.

The Big 10 is meeting this afternoon. It has already delayed practice in pads, with first games currently scheduled for the first week of September.
RE: There will be no college football this season -

I believe that when the Big 10, Pac and SEC announced the postponement of their seasons, they were pinning their hopes on a big drop in cases by the first week of September.
Is such a drop still possible? While Texas and Florida have covid-19 testing rates above 15%, many states in Big 10 country have much lower positivity rates. In Michigan, for example, the covid-19 test positivity rate is 2.5%. Other Big 10 states are higher. But an optimist could say that perhaps they could come down given a few weeks time: Ohio, 4.9%; Illinois, 4.1%; Wisconsin, 6.2%; Iowa, 9.6%.
So, despite the news this morning, I would be very, very surprised if the Big 10 doesn't give it another week or two before making a decision on pulling the plug on the football this fall.
(There are, I believe, other possibilities that *might* come into play, like trying to split the season between fall and spring. But because I haven't heard anything like that actually reported, I'd say this is very unlikely.)
Ultimately, the higher covid-19 rates in other states, especially the south, likely mean that multiple conferences will pull the plug and then all will follow to preserve the chance of a CFB football playoff in the spring.
But there are other possibilities...it is still possible, imo, that there will be some Power 5 games this fall.

Note that the Pac-12 and SEC will start in late September, but the current Big 10 schedule still starts in early September but has added bye weeks.

Lots of places hardest hit in SEC country, and maybe parts of California, will be approaching 20% already infected. With good mask usage and continued present restrictions that could keep Rt low enough to get to NY's current state. Really depends on how each community handles it- like that ball player said, sports are a reward for a functional society.

Looks like Tuesday could be decision day for the Pac.
Quote: A Pac-12 administrator said league presidents are getting "squirrely," and several league sources said they wouldn't be surprised if the presidents vote Tuesday to cancel fall sports.

Of note: per MaxPreps, no HS football is being played this fall in Calif., Wash., Ore. or Colo.
Utah is starting football (first games this week!) and Arizona has delayed football.

I'm not convinced that heart concerns specifically should be driving the decisions about covid-19 and athletics, but this story definitely is concerning:

Once again, sports organizations are taking more responsibility than government. I know a few weeks ago I saw a study showing heart damage in people that had tested positive for Covid-19, even in those who showed no symptoms. It was then that there seemed to be tangible evidence that we are being way to cavalier about this virus, not because it’s new and we don’t know what its impacts could be, but because we do now know it can cause long-term heart damage.
Of course, we don’t know how this will manifest in people over time. But the myocarditis Boston Red Sox Pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez suffered was a cautionary tale. He had tested positive and showed no symptoms. Then after he was cleared of Covid, the Red Sox gave him an MRI (don’t know if this is their SOP or Rodriguez experienced anything that made them do it) and they found the heart inflammation.
How many people have hear damage that hasn’t been caught? Have all athletes who have tested positive and recovered had MRIs, or even some random scans been done? I keep thinking about a guy like Russell Westbrook, who had Covid and plays a high cardio demand sport. Will we see a Hank Gathers moment?
The story of the former FSU player dying after cleared of Covid is a cautionary tale for universities that have had the DJ Durkin experience, and like Cal had with Ted Agu. They simply can’t afford the liability if players die or otherwise suffer from post-Covid complications on their watch. They don’t have the resources to do adequate testing as it is.

The Big Ten is canceling their football season. Which means there is absolutely no chance of a college football season this fall. Which means there is no college sports this fall or winter.
