Beau Baldwin is the new head coach at Cal Poly SLO. The past three years Baldwin was offensive coordinator and QB coach at Cal.

When in SLO, I recommend Firestone Grill or F. McLintocks.
And I just learned that John Madden played football at Cal Poly SLO.

Wow Marty, small world. That pic you posted may have been the Poly rodeo team the year after my dad finished. My dad came in third in saddle bronc at the national finals held in Colorado Springs, Colorado in1956. I only recognize Marvin Roberts in that photo (who would become a renown horseman and author) I recall Marvin playing a role in some of my dad's stories from his days of being on the Poly rodeo team.

Rodeo moved to football stadium the last few years - 2 day affair. professional company prepares stadium with plywood base (similar to BB flooring) and a lot of dirt

As a local my favorite is High Street Deli, and Firestone Grill or Old Slo BBQ. McClintocks isn't what it used to be

Who would have thought that CPSLO Rodeo from the 50's would be a more interesting topic than Stanford football of the 2020s. Actually, fascinating stuff and connections.

cardcrimson, the Central Coast is underrated and, for a lot of Californians, undiscovered. Next time anyone drives from the Bay Area to SoCal, take US 101 all the way instead of cutting over at Pacheco Pass. Lots of hidden gems between Paso Robles and Ventura, especially if you are willing to wander just a bit off the beaten path (thinking SLO and SB wine country, towns like SLO, Cambria, Avila Beach, Solvang, Santa Barbara of course, etc.). Not to mention that Stanford plays Cal Poly SLO and UCSB in a variety of sports more often than you'd think. I attended a Stanford men's soccer game at UCSB just a few years ago.

My hometown in flyover country has had annual rodeos since well before I was born. When I arrived at Stanford, the closest thing to rodeo that students talked about was cow tipping. Santa Barbara holds its annual rodeo in early August during a big party called Old Spanish Days. It's nice to see that rodeo culture is thriving in Cali.

And, of course, the “World’s Most Difficult Mini-Golf Course” located in Morro Bay.  I believe it is no longer in business.  It was a monster of a course.

Add to that the Apple Farm in SLO - a certain stop on the way home from SoCal. 

On our annual trips to the Southland with the kids, it was 5 down and 101 back.

A must is a trip to the Hitching Post. Not the one in ”Sideways” but the one west of Lompoc out in the middle of nowhere.

For lodging, I've heard the Madonna Inn is... different. We've stayed at Apple Farm before and, Giants, I agree, the restaurant there is top-notch.

The Madonna In. Is very Neat. I think especially for kids. I’ve stayed there 4-5 times. But the main attraction is the waterfall in the men’s room

Big fan of Firestone Grill right here.  Stop there whenever I'm in SLO, along with a few other places.  F. G. highly recommended.

I took my teenager to tour Cal Poly a couple of weeks ago.  We spent the weekend in Cayucos, a tiny beach town north of SLO.

Technically the campus is closed to visitors for Covid but we drove around a bit.  It's more modern than I expected, with lots of new construction.  The place looked idyllic with all the young people hanging out in the sun working on their laptops.

One of my buddies who went to Cal Poly said that at his freshman orientation the university president apologized to them all in advance, telling them that they're going to have a wonderful four years in SLO and then they'll have to leave because there aren't enough jobs in the central coast for all of the grads.

We tried to eat at Firestone Grill, which a lot of people here are recommending. Not surprisingly the line was out the door around the corner.

Went to Old Slo BBQ instead.  All weekend I was hoping for some tasebud-blowing tri-tip. This one was just OK.

mbdude, I meant the McLintock's Saloon in Pismo Beach/Shell Beach. Where the waiters do the trick in which they have you hold an empty glass upright on top of your head, they get up on a stepstool, blindfold themselves and attempt to pour ice water into said glass on your head. They also sing a righteous variation of Happy Birthday to anyone who says it's their birthday. I agree that the McLintock's in Arroyo Grande and SLO aren't anything special, although SLO has awesome creekside dining if you ask for it (as do many of the restaurants along the west side of Higuera Street).

Line at Firestone scares a lot people but it moves suprisingly fast. The only thing missing in SLO  is more breakfast places, especially on busy weekends

Wish I could go to Cal Poly SLO.  If I had to do it all over again...
