My god, did no one at the CMA stop and think "This is a bad idea" and advise Newsome of the same? I mean, the French Laundry is not worth dying over, or, worse, sending the public mixed messages.

Many think it is worth it. It's "to die for" is taking on a whole new meaning during pandemic.
The effort expended to point fingers and be outraged - even at public figures/politicians - is a bit over the top. Just try and do better in the future. And try to make reasoned policy - not extreme in one direction or the other. That way you don't give ammo to those who want to rail away.
P.S. When this is all clear, I'd like to dine at French Laundry - maybe even a bucket list item.

I think there are two concerns about this event:
1) At a time when we are all being asked to sacrifice for the common good, this even undermines the sense of joint sacrifice
2) Given the importance of consistent messaging from authorities, this confuses rather than clarifies the messaging
Whether the dinner "adhered to all health and safety measures" or not is not the issue. The average person is not going to perform a detailed review of their local county's ordinance to determine whether a get together with friends they are thinking of is allowable or not; they will base it on what they are observing around them, and if they observe the governor engaging in a large get together, what are the chances they will follow the spirit, let alone the letter of local healthcare directives.

My best lunch ever. Similar to Gov Newsom, it was for my wife's 50th birthday. My boss at the time was a part owner of the French Laundry. It was amazing. 14 courses (3 bites each), got to tour the kitchen, meet Thomas Keller, toured their roadside herb garden in Yountville. Great, great time.

The Reagans started that administration trying to be open and available, but that ended abruptly when he was almost killed. Now the security logistics and infrastructure burdens are almost enough on their own to eliminate the public schools for any future young kids. So I don't see a POTUS putting a child into a DC school unless it is absolutely part of their image, brand or campaign.
Quite probable Amy Carter will be the answer to that trivia question for a long, long time.

FWIW - Not sure if you were talking about the Clintons or Obamas. However, thanks to the USA's extensive history with racism the Obamas had quite a few death threats. I don't think it would have been possible for the Obama daughters to go to a public school without dramatically altering the schools they were attending. And that would have only added fuel to the racist rage.
As Chelsea is an alum, I trust you weren't going there.

My Hanukah, Christmas, Boxing Day, etc. get together will be over zoom. We had an outdoor Thanksgiving dinner with my in laws, who live about 3 miles from us. While I am confident that we could do Christmas safely as well, it's just not worth it.
