Sorry but the best Stanford QB game was Bobby Garrett in ‘53 leading SU to a 21-20 comeback win over the UCLA juggernaut of Red Sanders. He threw for over 300 yards when NOBODY did that. He also played the entire game at safety and kicked all three extra points.

Chaney was the Rod Garcia 0-5 game, iirc. Rod made up for it.....Chaney was a terrific college linebacker.

It was my first Big Game. Still one of the greatest sporting events I have ever been to.

It took several minutes to clear the cal fans from the field. The loudspeaker kept saying: "Please leave the field, the game is not over". Classic.

Remember that we had won 4 (I think) Big Games in a row at that point. The cal fans were desperate for a win. To then get it yanked away with the fans literally causing the loss was just unbelievable.....

Worth noting that since 1982, Stanford has a 25-12-1 record against Cal in Big Game. 1990 wasn't revenge of the play; revenge of the play has been the rest of the 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's, and now 2020.

CI, Arkansas was hoping to redshirt Ferguson but Montgomery was ineffective in the first half and Boyles put in Joe. Montgomery came back in the second half and played much better but not good enough.

On the fourth down stop of Jimmy Jones Simone had his hair on fire and as SC was huddling Mike was slapping every Stanford defender firing them up. Kauffman made a great play.

BC, thanks for posting this 15:00 clip - at least half of which featured ND's offense and some outstanding plays by Lynch.

But what struck me about this clip: in about 15 plays of Stanford on offense, we saw more formations, more misdirection, more scheming people open than we've seen in the last 10 years under Shaw. The difference is so stark. How about the TD play to JJ Lasley (which may be one of the most well-conceived offensive plays ever run by Stanford)? And then the big third down pass to a wide open TE late in the game? THAT is scheming people open - something completely missing under this regime.

It's sad what Stanford's offense has devolved to over the last decade.

The thing I remember about being in the Stanford section was the way the Weenie fans rushed the field after the failed two point conversion. The idiots didn't focus on celebrating with their team and fellow fans, they ran over to the Stanford section to flip us off and scream at us. I've run on the field several times to celebrate big wins and taunting the other fans was never part of it, too much joy to worry about that sort of thing. I didn't think it would really help but was glad the fools' early rush of the field gave us 15 yards and might give Hopkins a chance to hit a 55 yarder if by some miracle we recovered the onside kick. Amazingly, it happened and we got the close call on the roughing. Game over and the Cal fans were responsible for the loss. Instant Karma.

As stupid as it was for LSJUMB to be out on the field with four seconds left — at least they didn’t have an example of that stupidity from a game eight years before. To me, the rushing the field in 1990 was such a perfect example of weeniedom. What, we learn from history? Not.

As someone in the LSJUMB in '82, let me just say that the bandsters who were on the field (justifiably) thought the game was over when Garner's knee was down and the one official on the Stanford 25 signaled dead ball with his hands over his head. When the Cal students rushed the field, there were still, clearly 15 seconds left (or whatever it was). But to their credit, they did not rush the field while any play was potentially "live."

P.S. In all the replays of The Play, I think I can see myself. It's on about the 10 yard line, and I'm running toward the stands (with a group of others). I think I was technically on the field of play there before the herd run off. But I must admit to missing all the commotion on the field as after Garner was tackled a group of us were in group hug/jumping up and down with back to the action. And turned back to see the stampede a coming and then join it. And how about Gary T? If you could pick one innocent LSJUMBer just minding his own business in the back of the end zone, it would be Gary. And yet, he gets plowed over . . . and all the notoriety! Fortunately for all Stanford fans, we could not have picked a better person to "represent" than GT for that historic, and oft-revisited play.
