Thought finals were to be after Thanksgiving, but I read that the Academic Senate decided no finals for undergrad or grad students. Wow.
I'm not teaching this quarter, but I did teach online last spring. The main problem with online exams is the prevention of cheating. There are third-party outfits that will monitor students while they take an exam, but even with the invasion of privacy it's difficult to keep some students honest. I don't know if Stanford still has the Honor Code, but it's still an issue. There's also the fact that students are not on the same time zone--I had students in Asia, North America and Europe--so you have to give the exam asynchronously or else someone is taking the exam at 1 am local time. Part of my syllabus revision was to require a final project in place of an exam, and, honestly, I think the students learned more.

Many of my finals both at Stanford and after Stanford (and when I was a professor) were take home exams, where the same issues arise. They were all open book, and they were all in a format that did not lend itself to cheating; there was no right or wrong answer per se, and grades were based on the strength of the argument. I was able to do that when I taught statistics courses, so it should be possible even for most techie courses.

I'm torn about Stanford football. On the one hand, it would be satisfying to conclude the season with an emotional win. But the team is still not very good and won't get better sitting on the sidelines. They need more practice and more game experience. But how would I feel if they play two more unsatisfying games as they did vs. Oregon and Colorado and finish 1-4? It also seems ridiculous to have these thoughts about an extracurricular activity in the middle of a pandemic. But I admit how much I have enjoyed watching teams play this fall.

Not ridiculous at all, Spiny. Sports provide some normalcy and a much needed “escape” from the horrors of the day. Mental health matters. And to those of us who are big sports fans, the games help. They always have. Especially now.
So I don’t feel guilty at all watching the games. And I am incredibly thankful for those that are playing them and providing us with this needed respite.

This exactly what I was trying to tell family when the Santa Clara County order was announced, but didn’t express myself as well as you did here... this is exactly what I’m feeling about Stanford women’s Basketball and hope they can relocate and play, while maintaining safe and healthy all season long.

WBB should relocate. It is unfortunate that they have to do so and costly to the school and, yes, harder to follow Covid 19 protocols than if they stayed home. Yet I think the players who have dedicated so much work to this season deserve a chance to play. No one should be made to coach or play if she is uncomfortable doing so. But they should have the opportunity .
There is also a learning experience here; they now have a visceral understanding of the hardships faced by families who can’t work at home. Overcoming those hardships is a part of ‘learning’ .
Not an easy decision to be sure and not one without risk. Doing nothing, though, has its own price.

There isn't enough time to implement Tara's idea about pods. Plus at the moment there isn't that much incentive for the other conference teams to attempt to completely rework the schedule.

No Program may coordinate, arrange, or engage in travel outside of Santa Clara County so that its members can participate in athletic or recreational activity with individuals outside of their stable group. This includes, but is not limited to, traveling to other counties or states to participate in competitive play with other teams.
No Program shall participate in athletic or recreational activities within Santa Clara County with individuals who have traveled from outside of the County who are not members of the Program’s stable group.
Any Program that violates this provision shall be prohibited from operating within Santa Clara County."
Pretty stiff penalty for violating it. You're toast.

For how long? Sounds permanent to me. As they are already prohibited from playing within SCC as long as the order is to in place. So it suggests that once it’s lifted the ban stays in place for those who violate the order. I’m curious as to where she believes she has that authority.

Actually, given that most on Covid board view me as a reckless person who doesn't care about virus growing out of control, I was thinking one of them might dub me the Kevin Bacon character at the parade. You know, when he said "Remain calm. All is well." And then got flattened by the panicking masses. Substitute virus doing the flattening, and voila!
