For the record I laughed out loud while reading the article. I guess Kelly is lobbying for UND to go to the Sugar Bowl, but really he's just being a prick, IMO. And I am not a UND hater; in fact when I was growing up they were my second-favorite team. Back in the day, my dad and I used to leave Mass after communion so we could get home in time for the Notre Dame football highlights show.
In any case, Kelly might not have to worry about families attending CFP games after Saturday's rematch versus Clemson.
I AM a Domer-hater -- and think that Kelly is "Exhibit A" in the age-old question: Why did God make so many more horse's a$$es than horses?

So the Domers make the playoffs and Kelly refuses because Mrs. Book can't go? Kelly would not be able to continue to live in South Bendover. Football. The number religion under the Golden Dome.

I heard about the Kelly comment on sports talk radio. Totally ridiculous and so not credible that Kelly just looks like an idiot.
Doesn't change the fact that he has elevated ND into a Top 5 football program after Stanford put the finishing touches on a 4-8 Irish season . . . in what now seems like an eternity ago . . .

That's a good one.
In all seriousness, ND doesn't deserve a CFP berth. They beat Clemson without Trevor Lawrence, and they didn't play North Carolina. Outside of Clemson, the ACC is light years behind the SEC. Teams should never back into the CFP after a loss. Conference championship games should be seen as quarterfinals.
Does anyone honestly believe that ND belongs on the same field with Clemson or that they'd have a legitimate chance in another rematch?
Regardless, if they do squeeze into the Playoff, I'm pretty sure that ND will take another massive beatdown from Alabama. That might be fun to watch.

In addition to TL, Clemson was missing a couple key defenders including their star ILB if I understand thing correctly. I think that was the biggest difference in the 2 games--Clemson ended up dominating both lines of scrimmage. And yes, someone other than ND deserves to be in the playoffs, meaning Kelly can get his wish to defend family values (as he sees them)

Man, I was rooting for aTm, but alas, it didn't come to pass. I look forward to Saban handing Notre Dame's arse on a platter in their semifinal game.

ESPN's Andrea Adelson makes some good points in an article about the failure of the CFP program.
Quote:Because there is so much emphasis placed on strength of schedule, body of work, ranked wins and (to a much lesser extent) championships, it becomes unattainable for a large number of teams to even think about the top four. The only way any possible expansion fixes the issues is if there are guaranteed spots for each Power 5 champion plus the highest-ranked Group of 5 team. But in years such as this, where unranked Oregon upsets previously undefeated USC, that format would also get blasted.
I disagree with the last sentence. I believe that such a system would be far better than the current one. There should be 8 teams in the playoff. The eight should consist of the five Power 5 conference champions, the top two highest ranked Group of 5 teams, and the 8th team would be the highest ranked team not already in. Once the eight teams are established, seed them based on ranking.
Losing your CCG should cost you a spot in the playoff unless you're ranked high enough to snag that 8th spot.
With such a system, the eight teams this season would have been Alabama, Clemson, tOSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, and ND. That would be an exciting 3 weekend playoff with plenty of opportunity to root for an underdog. The end result would most likely be Alabama vs Clemson in the final, but at least other teams would have a shot.

I would add that each of the two highest ranked Group of 5 teams would have to be ranked in the top 15. If there isn't a Group of 5 team to fill one or both of those slots, then the highest ranked team not already in would get that slot.

College Football is completely broken.
It's like why even bother playing the games? What, exactly, did the outcome of the ACC Championship mean in terms of playoff implications? Not a damn thing. And to go further downstream, how the hell did Oregon deserve to play for the Pac-12 championship?
I know for certain if Alabama had lost to Texas A&M, Texas A&M beat Florida, and Clemson throttled Notre Dame, it would have gone like this:
1. Clemson
2. Ohio State
3. Texas A&M
4. Alabama
The whole agenda today was to get Notre Dame on for TV ratings. But, Alabama is higher up the pecking order in terms of TV priority, so if ND needed to be bumped to get a 1-loss Alabama on, it would have happened. You know it, and I know it. I get that it is a TV show, but that's not what it is sold as being.
The CFP committee should be making it more attainable, by expanding the franchise. Not only is it not allowing more teams in, but it's also doing everything it can to keep the same teams in it year after year.
I will watch Alabama play Clemson in the final, because those are clearly the to best teams. But I have no interest watching Alabama crush Notre Dame or Clemson mopping up Ohio State.

Who cares. The NCS is mythical. There has never been a true playoff. I absolutely want to watch Bama crush ND. Hopefully by about 50. It’s good for the soul. Hopefully Clemson will do the same to OSU. But that should be a closer game. And OSU could win. That would be bad.
Maybe someday they will go to 6 or 8 teams and allow all conference champs in. Until then, we have this. It ain’t pure. But nothing is. Ivory Soap was once. But then there was that face on the detergent box....
Seriously, why take it so seriously.....

In Pac-12 news, the Army coach is whining because Pac-12 teams don't want to play in meaningless bowls in this meaningless season so the Independence Bowl cancelled, meaning
9-2 Army is without a bowl opponent. But 12 out of 14 SEC schools are playing in bowls, including 2-8 South Carolina.

All of that makes sense to me.
Many of the Army athletes will confront many challenges in their career that could kill them and their teammates, so their willingness to play for the country during COVID is admirable in some way.
The Pac-12 teams played a season without family, friends or fans, so many of them don't want to endure another few weeks away from those people in their lives to play (insert name here) university in AL, MS, LA, or even TX.
The SEC teams have generally played games with friends, family and some fans in the stands. That same situation will occur for the bowl game too. So from the SEC view this is not that different than a normal year. In most years a 5-7 team takes that bowl invite to get a few more weeks of practice, so not shocking to me that a 2-8 type team would find a few more weeks of practice valuable too.
We will definitely see is a large number of players opt out of the bowl game featuring 4-6 vs 2-8. And I will say good for them. Those that will want to note those players have an obligation to their teammates or their school can save that line of thinking for the 2021 season.

except this year a lot of the teams will get less extra practice than in a normal year given the first bowl games are today and the last non-NY6 games are 02 Jan
