RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Papa John - 03-04-2021

Sure, I knew about the scholarships last year and I'm not saying that one person is more likely than the next. It just seems surprising that last year was a one-off blip given that other Pac-12 schools have plenty of folks who have either transferred or are in the portal:
ASU: 13
Arizona: 11
Cal: 9
Colorado: 8
Oregon: 10
OSU: 11
Stanford: 2
UCLA: 8
USC: 6
Utah: 12
Washington: 5
WSU: 19 (!)

Many of these conference members have incoming transfers, so this is not a projection of net gains or losses via transfers.

Back to Stanford, of the 11 players listed as 5th or 6th year below, only about 50% are projected starters. So I would expect that a few more players would be on the lookout for greener pastures. I'm more than happy to be wrong in this regard.

Pakola withdrew his name from the transfer portal

i am really proud of him for doing this.
the man understands the value of a Stanford education.

The exodus this year is not through the portal, but through guys "declaring for the draft" when they aren't that caliber of player.

Your 2 is likely missing Caleb Phillips (Hawaii) and Kyle McCombs (no destination yet). That said, Boles, Phillips, and McCombs are all walk-ons but IMO should be counted as I'm sure some of the other schools' transfers above are walk-ons too. Osiris St. Brown is off the roster but not in the portal, which is interesting.

If some of said 5th/6th year guys were indeed "on the lookout for greener pastures," they would've already entered the portal. Offseason workouts have started.

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 03-04-2021

Hey all:

Just wanted everyone to know that I am checking every day for Joshua Pakola and Aristotle Taylor (so glad that we got another strong name after losing Jet Toner) to be added to the official roster, at which point I'll add them to the grid.

Agree that Pakola would fill our position of greatest need along with center, though I am concerned with how green we are at ILB (though with lots of potential).

It seems like being worried about safety is basically a given now, so, yeah, that too.

Thanks, SamuelMcF. I was indeed missing Phillips and McCombs in my list.

None of the frosh have been added to the roster so you'll likely be waiting a while for Aristotle. :) There is another PWO DL target, Jacob Katona, who announced his top 3 of us, Duke, and Vandy (all PWO offers) a few weeks ago as well.

The website hasn't been updated ultra-recently as far as I can tell. Carberry is no longer on it, but his presumed replacement coach Heffernan is also not on it yet.

Of course frosh are not on the Spring roster, but you can see the freshmen if you select "#CardClass21" from the drop-down menu. That's the list where I have not yet seen Aristotle Taylor. As you intimated, I doubt they are finding the need to update either roster regularly.

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 05-14-2021

Updates, friends!

1) Removed senior walk-on WR Cameron Buzzell, who no longer appears on the roster. Given that next year he would have been a fifth-year non-scholarship player, maybe he thought better of having to foot the bill. Thanks for your service, Cameron, and best wishes for the future! (Cameron is from the most northwestern part of the continental States. He has a really cool story.)

2) Added PWO freshmen-to-be DE Aristotle Taylor, DE Jacob Katona, and CB Evan Jackson.

3) Sophomore DE Josh Pakola remains not listed on the roster...

Shaw also announced in his press conference today that Aeneas DiCosmo has moved to OLB while Gabe Reid has moved to ILB. Tucker Fisk meanwhile is going to play both TE and DE.

A couple quick notes:
- Anson Pulsipher did not retire from football. He is LDS and went on his mission. (WO WR Kale Lucas did the same thing last year, after his freshman year.)
- The roster has not been updated yet, but more changes in addition to VB Card's notes above: Caleb Kelly and Jason Kaul to ILB, Lance Keneley to OLB.

Thanks for this, SMF. I appreciate especially your note on Anson Pulsipher, who was a really good PWO get, IMO; glad to see he will still be on the team (hopefully) after his church commitment.

I will also update positions after they become rosterized. Perhaps acclimation to the new position explains why Caleb Kelly did not play last year...

I think being not very good at football is why Caleb Kelly did not play last year. However this is the right move for his body size, and the room now has plenty of bodies (which it sorely lacked recently).

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - BostonCard - 08-17-2021

You are missing Wilfredo Ayber at OLB.  We are going to need him.

BC

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 08-19-2021

Ok. Long overdue updates:

Additions
FR Wilfredo Aybar, Outside Linebacker

Subtractions
SR Tobe Umerah, Outside Linebacker
SR walk-on Tae Le, Tight End

Position Changes
FR walk-on Jason Amsler, switched from Guard to Tackle
SO walk-on Logan Berzins, switched from Center to Guard/Tackle
SO Lance Keneley, switched from Defensive End to Outside Linebacker
SO Omari Porter, switched from Cornerback to Safety
JR Aeneas DiCosmo, switched from Inside Linebacker to Outside Linebacker
JR walk-on Jason Kaul, switched from Safety to Inside Linebacker
JR Barrett Miller, switched from Guard/Tackle to Guard
SR Caleb Kelly, switched from Outside Linebacker to Inside Linebacker

Welcome Wilfredo Aybar, who re-classified to class of 2021, to our great benefit. Farewell to Tobe Umerah, who never found his great potential actualized on the field at Stanford, and Tae Le, who was a walk-on, but a legit recruit who was offered scholarships at other schools.

Josh Pakola is still not listed on the roster.

The position switches are already known to most. It is interesting that Barrett Miller is not listed as a guard/tackle anymore. Jason Kaul following in Spencer Jorgensen's footsteps. Gabe Reid remains listed at OLB.

Interested to hear any thoughts. And, as always, corrections welcome.

RE: 2021 Stanford Football Personnel - TrumpCard - 08-19-2021

Great work by Shaw and Co to get Aybar on board.

I will be interested to read the full story on Pakola if and when it becomes public. He’s a loss of tremendous proportions.

There also are some weight gains since the 2020 roster. Not too many are hugely notable, but DWP adding 10 may not be a great sign for fitness. I hope he’s retained as much mobility and endurance as possible given the lack of depth at the position.

Not a loss quite yet.

As a pure guess, maybe the wait is for summer quarter grades to come out.

Also, Omari Porter is our latest CB --> S switch. Hope it works out OK this time. Why can't we just recruit safeties?

And last year. And the year before, had a certain safety from Washington not had his admission revoked. The cavalry is coming.

My continual gripe about defensive recruiting is the reactive - rather than proactive - approach. These future depth issues (S, DL) could be seen years ago. You have to sign guys at every position every year. Period.

I will say the plan to sign pretty much a full starting-11 defense in 2022 is one I agree with and wish we more or less did every year (with some flexibility for BPA). Pipelines need to be more stable and consistent than signing 4 DL in a class then signing just 1 for 3 straight afterwards, or signing zero linebackers total in a class which should NEVER happen.
