RE: Tiger injured in a rollover - murky - 02-24-2021

I wish him a speedy recovery, but as far as I'm concerned, this can't exit the news cycle soon enough.  CNN seemed to have non-stop coverage with press conferences and other nonsense.

Update on Tiger:

Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

And updated:

https://www.cbssports.com/golf/news/tiger-woods-accident-update-golfing-future-in-question-amid-long-road-to-full-health-complete-recovery/

Dr. Michael Zuri, a doctor of podiatric medicine and board-certified physician who specializes in sports injuries, explained the severity of what Woods underwent Tuesday. "He's going to have multiple surgeries over the next week or two," said Zuri. "This is definitely [of a] limb-threatening [nature]. Do I think he'll lose his leg? Probably not ... but any normal person, probably this is a below-knee amputation.

"The next week is crucial. Infection, stuff like that is a major concern. ... I would say a month is when they'll kind of know what's going on as long as he doesn't have a bone infection. This is a tenuous thing for a while. The encouraging part is that, in the absence of infection, it's not crazy to think that Tiger could make his way back to a normal life. But to play golf again at an elite level? It's almost completely out of the question. Even if the leg heals, all the bones heal, everything heals, he's going to be dealing with arthritis from this," said Zuri. "These type of crush ankle injuries, if it's the ankle that was shattered as well, those are like 100% arthritis within a five-year period. It's likely for him he might need an ankle replacement. He's going to have multiple surgeries over the next year and probably surgery in 10 years. This is going to be a long, long thing for him. These types of multi-traumas to the leg are just devastating."

I haven't seen any evidence that he was impaired when he was driving.  Yes, he has a history of doing so, but we should probably not assume one way or another until it is reported.

I’m not making that assumption.  But I am suggesting that something was going on – he was driving way too fast being the most obvious non-impaired possibility  And frankly tiger has had a history of very destructive behavior. That’s why I think he needs help.

Not sure I see how you get there Lex24.   Way too many assumptions IMHO. The catch here is that since he was famous before he had a driver's license we have seen every infraction in his life.

FWIW - On this one I doubt we will ever get a complete recap. However one set of explanations is related to the vehicle itself.  There could be a situation where he was distracted because he needed to do more with his loaned GV80 than he would need to do in his vehicle (phone call, conference call, radio stations, seat adjustments, etc.).   Couple any of that with pain meds, lack of familiarity with the road and/or lack of familiar with the vehicle and I think there is more than enough to explain the incident without imagining he needs help of any kind.

I say, I doubt we will get a detailed recap because Genesis was the sponsor of the event and he was driving their vehicle.   The easiest explanations would be really devastating for the sponsor.  Throwing a sponsor under the bus wouldn't be good for a celebrity endorser.

From the doctor's statement, it sounds like his golfing career is over.  I hope he can keep his demons away in his post golf career life.

RE: Tiger injured in a rollover - BostonCard - 02-24-2021

The LA County sheriff says it was "purely an accident"

https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/30957919/la-county-sheriff-says-tiger-woods-was-not-drunk-crash-purely-accident

No charges to be filed.

You are right that we may never know what happened.  Any one of a number of things could have caused the accident, some of which (like falling asleep at the wheel, or driving too fast) would have been his fault, and others (blinded by the dawning sun or a vehicle malfunction, for example) would not have been.  I think people are right that we will never know, and I would not say that it is not possible that this was his fault.  However, before jumping to conclusions that "something was going on", perhaps we ought to hear some evidence that this was the case.  Sometimes even people who have a history of substance use have "purely an accident".

There's a chance he was on painkillers, but since nobody else was involved in the accident I doubt the toxicology report will ever see the light of day. Would be a different story if he'd hit another car or had anyone else in the car with him.

Big difference in age. Medical miracles happen, of course, but the chance of a return to elite golf is beyond remote.

Renowned medical expert predicts Tiger will be back competing in a year:

RE: Tiger injured in a rollover - Phogge - 02-25-2021

He will be able to play at some point. Maybe good enough to win a few on the Senior Tour but hard to believe he can compete with the kids playing so well these days.

If that WW2 RAF pilot can lose both legs and still play golf on 1940ish artificial limbs then so can Tiger.

Did anybody else think Tiger came off a little weird during his chat with Nance at Riveria last Sunday?

I think he comes off as a little weird in general...

Was reading that Woods allegedly has prescription drug/painkiller "issues."  Really hope that's not the case.

Update on Woods' car crash investigation:

RE: Tiger injured in a rollover - Phogge - 03-22-2021

Nance and Woods has a Zoom during a lull in the LA tournament on the final day. He seemed a bit out of it and looked drained. Since he was the “host” he probably had a bunch of responsibilities so he could have been gassed. Or stoned.

RE: Tiger injured in a rollover - BostonCard - 04-07-2021

Tiger was driving between 84 and 87 mph when he crashed.

Not sure this is quite correct. The car was going that fast when it hit the median, but that was after he mistakenly floored the accelerator instead of slamming on the brakes when he started to lose control.
