For sure. She hadn't been tested yet, so always nice to have that first gut check moment come when your team will win anyway vs. in a tight match in the postseason. Clawing back is a skill that, like anything, needs practice. I would've loved to see her be first off court again, I suppose, but looking back on the match now, I'm glad she got this experience. 

Gordon, Choy, and Higuchi cruising is a really good sign. Arbuthnott cruising is a great sign. Shin staying in control of the match and winning it on her terms is a similarly great sign.

Whoa, and in other news, we will be playing an absolutely elated Colorado team on Sunday morning, because they just knocked off Cal 4-3. 

CU took the doubles point behind 6-3 wins at Courts 1 and 3. Cal then got to a 3-1 lead by winning on Courts 5 (Danish freshman Hannah Viller Moeller won 6-3, 6-1), 2 (Julia Rosenqvist won 6-2, 6-3), and 1 (Haley Giavara beat Sara Nayar 6-4, 6-3). Then the Buffs got one back with a 6-4, 6-3 win for junior Megan Forster over Valentina Ivanova in a big upset. Two matches left (Cal's Jada Bui (Fr.) vs. CU's Maria Campos (So.) at #4 and Cal's Anna Bright (Sr.) and CU's Ky Ecton (Jr.) at #6). Cal just needed one, and Cal won the first sets in each (Bui by a 7-5 score, and Bright in a tiebreaker). Both matches went to a second-set tiebreaker, and had Cal won either one of them, they win the match. But CU won both to extend the matches to third sets. That was enough to swing the momentum beyond Cal's reach, as Ecton won the third set 6-0 and Campos closed it out with a 6-2 win on Court 4. 

Might be the best win in program history (or at least recent program history). A seismic upset in college tennis. Not a blue chip to be found on that Colorado roster, and Ecton was just a three-star recruit (albeit a two-time Colorado state champion at #1 singles). But she just got a third-set bagel over a blue chip with a lot of success playing college tennis. Wowza.

Doubles lineups appear to be the same as Friday’s for both teams:

1. Gordon/Madurawe vs. Sara Nayar/Fleur Eggink (who beat Cal’s Giavara/Ivanov 6-3)
2. Arbuthnott/Geller vs. Megan Forster/Antonia Balzert (who lost 6-4 to Cal’s Bright/Viller Moeller)
3. Choy/Shin vs. Maria Campos/Ky Ecton (who beat Cal’s Rosenqvist/Richardson 6-3)

Live stats aren’t working for me—it says in the notes on that site that the match starts at 11am MT, while it’s scheduled for 10am MT, so if it takes another 18 minutes for stats to show up, we’ll know who won the doubles point and who leads in singles so far....

Stats are working now.  Arb and Geller up 4-0, Choy and Shin up 2-1, Gordon and Mad down 1-2
Colorado is unranked, but is 7-2 on the season.

We take the doubles point 2-1.  Gordon and Mad got smoked 1-6.  Our other 2 teams cruised 6-0 and 6-1.

Our singles lineup is what it’s been, but with Madurawe rotating into the #6 spot today. At this point, I think we have to assume that Blake is either hurt or has been under quarantine/covid protocols so far this young season (or both).

Six first sets and two quick, dominating performances from Geller and Madurawe have us on the brink. 

1. Gordon leads 6-2, 3-2
2. Arbuthnott leads 6-3, 4-1
4. Choy tied 6-2, 4-6, 0-0
5. Shin leads 6-4, 4-3

So Choy will play the first full third set of our young season. Let’s see how she fights back!
Nayar gets it back on serve at #1, while Arbuthnott and Shin are both a game away from clinching....

Gordon at 5-5 in her second, and Choy at 2-2 in her third.
Gordon now trailing 5-6, and I believe Nayar will be serving for the set. Meanwhile, Choy goes up 3-2.

(If there are infrequent tennis watchers out there, teams will often suspend play once one team “clinches” the win by getting to 4 points. But sometimes they play it out, and while Stanford often likes to stop once it’s clinched, they’ve been playing it out this year, and my strong suspicion is that is at least partially due to get the players more complete matches. That’s useful not just for player development, in having experience closing out matches, but to have a resume for NCAA singles/doubles championships, which are separate from the team championships. Normally, I think Lele goes by the “it’s a long season, let’s not risk injury once we’ve won the match” way of thinking, but this isn’t a long season, and we need to get enough time on court.)

Choy wins her third 6-2 and its 6-0 Stanford as Gordon forces a second-set tiebreaker!
Nayar is a legitimately good player, so I’m not the least bit bothered that Gordon is getting tested here (I’d be a lot happier if she pulled it out, of course). 

But Colorado, like a lot of teams, can’t match our depth. They might have one or two really good players, but we’re usually deeper than just about any team in the country. This is the Stanford recipe—get wins on the back three courts and find that fourth win either in doubles or on one of the top three courts.

Also: it is super stupid to only have game-level live scoring and no live video. To not be able to follow along with every live-or-die point in a tiebreaker is *checks notes* yep, super stupid.
Also, Michaela hasn’t had a test yet this season. She needed a match like this.
Michaela apparently pulls out the tiebreak win! (I say apparently because the scoreboard shows her winning the tiebreak 8-7, which isn’t a thing.)

But if so, that’s great fight and great finishing all around. 

Really hard to figure how this lineup beat Cal, but it probably comes down to (1) Cal has been very inconsistent for the past few years, and (2) Colorado has a really, really good coach and is squeezing every last drop of performance out of her roster. We also probably benefited from a bit of an emotional letdown on CU’s part after such a program-defining win on Friday.
