Bill Walton played IM hoops when he was at the law school...and if memory serves, there was a fairly epic contest between the law school and am bunch of football players (incl. Garin Veris, Vincent Whte, Emile Harry, Terry Jackson) for the A league championship. 

I remain bitter about a different IM hoops championship game...but nobody cares. :-)

1 How many guys who say they are coming back to get a degree actually return?

2 Keep recruiting one and done's. He just was the wrong one and done.

1. Pretty sure basically all of them do.

2. Agreed, plus I'm not even sure he was necessarily "the wrong one" - it wasn't exactly his fault 2 family members died during a season shortened by a global pandemic. So I guess in hindsight, maybe?

FWIW, I get the sense Harrison Ingram is NOT a one and done.

Baylor has had no one-and-dones since the 2017/18 season.  It has not lost any early departures to the NBA.

UCLA has not had a one-and-done since the 2017/18 season.  They lost Jaylen Hands as a sophomore to the 2019 NBA draft; he would have been a senior. They also lost Aaron Holiday as a sophomore to the 2018 draft, but he would have exhausted eligibility before this year.

Gonzaga has not had a one-and-done since the 2017/18 season.  They lost sophomore Filip Petrušev after the 2019 season to a Euro team, and Brandon Clarke and Rui Hachimura, who as juniors would have exhausted eligibility last year.  They had a one-and-done (Zach Collins) during the 2016/17 season; he would have exhausted eligibility last year.



So, four teams, none of whom had one-and-dones who, had they stayed, would have been on the final-four rosters.

A shy poster has gently corrected me to note that Moses Brown was a one-and-done for UCLA in 2018-19, and would have been a junior this year had he stayed.  I apologize about the editor.

I get that sense too. Ziaire is probably more tantalizing to NBA scouts because his upside is likely higher than Ingram's (more athletic and longer.) But, I have a feeling that Ingram will have a more impactful freshman season than Ziaire did.

Semi retirement has brought with it some re-thinking Of priorities. I live on a part of a ridge with few neighbors hence no cable and with satellite TV. NBC Sports has pulled out of DISH so no Giants TV. I love baseball and played the game in college and in high level semi pro for years. But I have my radio and John Miller so I will get by. I fell in love with Stanford football in 1952 and attended 65 consecutive Big Games even giving up work at times. For various reasons I’m done going in person but I’ll get by. I made the same basketball decision 10 years ago and I got by. My school gave up football and my pals on the team are still pissed. But we get by. I’ve learned to not care so much about games. Just enjoy the wins fellows, don’t sweat the losses and don’t wring your hands for a minute when some 18 year old hotshot thinks that the world revolves around himself. Stanford isn’t Tuscaloosa or Spokane and you should be happy about that.

I have tried watching baseball on a computer when at my son’s house in Memphis and once at a hotel watching Stanford football on an IPAD. Hate it. Our TV is old. Thanks for the thoughts. I will look into streaming by HDMI but I’m not excited about buying another source service.

I love John Miller’s stories and impressions, not so excited by his play by play. But it will suffice for now.

Sorry Bobbbb... would have been fun but the drive is a killer. When I overnight in Santa Clara for a Sunday Niners game (on the NFL dime) I might attempt to score a ticket if Stanford is selling a safe area gen admit. Otherwise I’ll just be an old man watching at home (and sleeping through most of it).

The context here is that the NCAA has given all players an extra year of eligibility.  So while other teams are going to be stocked with 5th-year players, we're already losing a lot of talent.  And if Wills and Davis go, even more.

But, hey, now Muir has an excuse to give Haase yet another free pass for next season if we don't make the Tourney. :/

I'm certain there are many programs with players not coming back to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility.

Also, Wilner should be smart enough to know most programs don't have players like Ingram and Silva coming in to replace whoever doesn't return.

The big questions are about Delaire and Wills returning, right?

Just possibly Wills. I have seen nothing to indicate Delaire isn't coming back. Neither of them have graduated yet; they will be seniors. (Unless they pull an Isaac White and load up to do so early.)

I didn't watch hardly any College Hoops this year, but the little I did see, left me with an impression Jaiden Delaire took a big step forward and Delaire, Ingram, and Silva would give Stanford a Big 3 of sorts in 2021-22.

If Wills returns, the starting 5 is something like:

F Delaire
F Ingram
F Jones
G Wills
G Silva

That looks pretty good to me.  Then you have the Frosh (O'Connell, Taitz, Murrell, and Angel) who you will expect to improve as Sophs, and Jarvis Moss.  The problem I see is no big guy beyond Delaire who can really play. Kisunas is just a big body and 5 fouls, but you've got at least 10 players you can put on the floor. 

If Wills and Delaire didn't return, the team would be in deep doo-doo.

Still, Stanford should make transferring easier and see if it can find a big if it wants to seriously contend.

Bob, isn't Silva a PG? Or can he play 2nd Guard?

I know O'Connell is a pure PG, so is Silva 2 just to get O'Connell on the floor with him?

Yeah, O'Connell will be the starting PG next year.

Also, Kisunas had his moments.  He can be serviceable next year.

Pencilling freshmen Ingram and Silva in on the basis of their recruiting rankings is silly.  Did 2020 not teach anyone anything?  They may be good, great even, but until they are actually playing college basketball it is a fool's errand to assume anything about them starting.

If ZW had not had to leave the team the first time, he probably would never have lost his starting spot, and perhaps he would have actually grown into a more dominant role.

Haven't we had 3 freshman starters to kick off the season the last 2 years?

Agree with Bob. O'Connell makes the other players better. Murrell will be pretty good going forward.
