Looking at the preseason poll, in the tourney, we have beaten #24 (MOST), #5 (Louisville), #1 (SoCar), and we'll face #7 (Zona) in the championship game. We were #2 so we, at least, matched preseason AP expectations.

In the Arizona-UConn game, the officials sent Arizona to the line for 31 free throws, and Connecticut attempted 20 free throws.
In our game, Stanford and South Carolina each attempted 12 free throws.
That's a big difference between the two games. I wonder what kind of officiating we will see on Sunday?

RE: Officiating. There's a correlation between the allowed physicality and the post game griping. You can't have it both ways. Everyone wants a game with less fouls called, less free throws, no one fouling out so the best players can finish the game, etc. When it's over, you then have to live with the no-calls (Baylor fans on DC's last shot, SC fans on the Brink push, etc.). What bugs me are the ticky tack calls in games where they are supposedly "letting the players play". For example, what's the point in calling the foul on Boston at the end of the first half when she was guarding Prechtel on the 3 point line? Watching it on replay, there was really nothing there. Maybe a graze of the arm. They had a foul to give, so perhaps that factored in to the refs judgement. But seriously - that was a big call on their best player for no reason. Other examples - Brink going for the loose ball by the SC bench and of course the phantom call on Williams on Aari where she didn't even touch her. Let those go!
RE: Getting out of the gate against Arizona. We've seen multiple games this year where we get a big lead and then lose focus in the second half. AZ will not give up, so we can't let them get momentum. If we have a lead at half, we need to extend it in the 3rd Q.

Stanford is going to have to take care of the basketball. In the 2nd game against Arizona, they had 16 TOs including 7(!) by Haley Jones and 4 by Lexie Hull. Arizona is going to pressure the ball. Stanford has to be ready for it.

Stanford needs to stay loose, relaxed as much as possible, and approach the game with a "let's have fun" attitude. That generates positive energy, and that's going to be crucial. This game is not going to be easy.
As of this morning, Stanford is a 9 point favorite (vs U Conn being a 14 point favorite yesterday) -- says a lot given that we previous beat Arizona by 27 and 14. I repeat, this game is not going to be easy. Arizona will be going into it with a "nothing to lose" attitude.
Go Card, relax and have fun!

Agree it is going to be a tough game. And yes Arizona has a great perimeter defense which puts a lot of ball pressure on guards. But so did Louisville and South Carolina. And we cut down the turnovers in those games to 9 and 12 respectively.
With McDonald guarding Williams, I think we will need other people to score. I think this game comes down to Jones, Lexie and Brink being able to score over their defender. I think Prechtel and Jump could have an impact as well. Jump could come in when Pueyo for Arizona is in the game (she played 25 mins vs UConn)

Just a nit but a lot of the AZ FT attempts were in "foul them to stop the clock" time.
Agree though, that officiating can be wildly inconsistent. Chances are we get Missy Sunday so get ready for a lot of whistles.

I can’t recall who put on a full court press against us this year.
I do recall we had some difficulty adjusting to it at first.
I’m sure Tara will have the team prepared for it, as it seems likely to happen.
We only took 8 shots from beyond the arc yesterday. Did Tara say anything in the presser about that? South Carolina seemed to be playing very tight person-to-person D on the perimeter.

Staley did in her post-game presser. She said they knew they could not win if they allowed us to shoot 3s so the game plan was engineered to stop that. And they shot and made more 3s than we did (9 of 20 vs. our 5 of 8), but at a lower percentage than ours. I credit our team for not jacking up poor 3s.

Betting odds on Stanford winning appear to have dropped -- yesterday, the Card was favored by 9.0, and earlier this morning it was 8.0. Now it's 7.5. Use that for motivation, Card!!!!

Lot of people rooting. I think TOS gathered up a compendium of tweets after the win against South Carolina.

If you read this board you’d come away with a feeling that it should be a three or so point spread.

I'm no Stanford WBB expert, but as a casual observer, it has seemed to me that Haley Jones is the most talented player on the team, and being the best player, it is incumbent upon her to play her best in the biggest games if Stanford is to win a title.
Question: Who is Stanford's best defensive option to slow Aari McDonald? Anna Wilson? And can Jones defend her without fouling? Perhaps a bigger body on McDonald can bother her?

When she gets tired, she will call an inexplicable foul.
