RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-17-2021

Looking at today's results, everything is still completely up for grabs.

Eight strokes separate the top ten teams, with #1-ranked Oklahoma at the bottom of that group. That's nothing with 36 holes left to play

If you'd told me this morning that Snyder & Menon were playing in place of Shimp & Brown, and that Thorbjornsen's score would be the one thrown out, I'd have told you to stop taking shrooms. Snyder's -2 and top 10 position might be his best play since the 2019 national championship.

Looking at some scorecards, it would appear that the back nine is more challenging that the front nine. With Stanford starting on #1 tomorrow, they will need to make some early birdies to stay in the hunt for a spot at nationals.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - fullmetal - 05-18-2021

Snyder with a Day 1, top-10 performance after probably not even thinking he was going to play mere days ago...way to step up!

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - Jamesy - 05-18-2021

It's going to be close... team tied for 6th with just Snyder left on the course. USD who's also tied for 6th, has two holes total remaining.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - Spiny_Norman - 05-18-2021

Stanford with three players under par today (Thorbjornsen, Vilips and Menon all shot 70) illustrates the depth of the team. But also the weakness of this lineup. On a day when the golf course was playing relatively easy (average score over a stroke better than yesterday), no one went really low. Without Shimp and Brown, Stanford is a team of 3, 4 and 5 players right now without anchors at 1 and 2 (e.g., Salinda and Wu in 2019) who can go low.

The team finished the 2nd round in 8th place, right where they started the day. But only 4 shots below the cut line. They have 18 holes tomorrow to get it going.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-18-2021

Not a bad day, but not a good day. They will be playing uphill tomorrow, but only have to make up 4 strokes on the teams ahead of them unless Oklahoma puts up a strong performance tomorrow which is a possibility. I wonder if Oklahoma doesn't have their best players available? Not sure how the #1 team in the nation is 17 shots out of first after two days.

Once again, holes 10-13 were our undoing. Way too many bogeys

Snyder bogeying 9 and 18, two of the easiest holes on the course, did not help either. He basically gave up 3 shots to the field on those 2 holes alone.

Stanford will know where they stand vs. Oklahoma all day. The teams are playing together along with 7th place San Diego.

Snyder reverted to 2020-21 form today. We got one great round out of him. I'll take that and hope he at least plays decently tomorrow

OTOH, Menon at -1 is a pleasant surprise.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - bl82 - 05-19-2021

Off to a good start today, with the team in a 4th place tie with Texas A&M at -9. That said, three teams are lurking at -8, including #1 seed Oklahoma. Our players have played 4-7 holes, with Ng -2 on the day and Thorbjornsen, Menon and Snyder at -1. Vilips has the only bogey so far and is even for the day. Unlike some of our competition, we don't yet have an obvious throwaway score.

The top five advance and this competition is likely to go down to the final hole.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-19-2021

Nailbiting time.  Five teams, separated by three strokes, are vying for the last spot.  Stanford in the middle of the pack, two strokes from the cut line.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - bbm233 - 05-19-2021

I think we have to get to -12 at a minimum to have a chance to be in a playoff for the last spot. Currently 4 strokes short of that. Going to take a team effort, as no single person is capable of going really low.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - Spiny_Norman - 05-19-2021

I think the path to the top 5 has to be to take advantage of the remaining par 5s, 14 and 18 with a flurry of birdies, maybe an eagle. Stanford already missed an opportunity to make some headway when nobody birdied the par 5 9th, the 2nd easiest hole on the course. Hopefully they can get some putts to fall.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-19-2021

4 strokes out.

BC

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - BostonCard - 05-19-2021

2 strokes back.

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - fullmetal - 05-19-2021

Now 6-7 strokes back with only eight holes remaining. Menon triple-bogeyed the 15th hole, ouch.

-12 is indeed the number - but we never got there. We finished at -8, in 7th. The difference between our squad and those that qualified is each of them had one or more individuals in the top 10. The guys who played did OK. The team shot under par each round and Menon did more than you could expect, with a T-21. But if Shimp and Brown were available, I have to think our score would have been 4-6 strokes better, which gets us into the top 5.

In the end, the team did just as I expected at the start of the year - made it to regionals but not to the championship. Next year I expect them to be one level better.

Now, let's watch Rachel Heck lead the Stanford women to the natty!

RE: MGolf NCAA Regionals - Spiny_Norman - 05-19-2021

The West Coast Conference will have more NCAA qualifiers than the P12. USF, San Diego and Pepperdine are in. For the P12, looks like only Arizona State and Oregon State will make it.

Do we know for sure Shimp and/or Brown were Covid-related casualties?

If so, I'd be very curious on the backstory, particularly at this time (where virus is essentially a non-threat).  By way of examples, high school sports are playing in the county, and participants take tests 3x/week.  The false positives have really caused problems - including for Paly Varsity Boys hoops and the Menlo Girls varsity hoops (in each case the positive testee didn't feel sick and tested four consecutive days negatively).  No matter, the entire team on the shelf for 10 days.  The same thing almost happened to one JV boys team, until a dad (not I) spoke with the third-party tester, who acknowledged that the positive test results (2 of them) should have been put in "further testing" pile and not positive result pile.  The further tests on the two kids came up negative; thus, no quarantine.

But here's the real kicker.  I'm aware of a HS team that had a positive test.  But it was an outdoor sport, and the school/league waived the quarantine requirement based on reasoning that even if test result is legit, the chances for transmission are so low in outdoor sport that the team need not be quarantined.  And I'm not sure if even the player sat out.  If they can do that at HS level in the county, it's hard for me to believe that Stanford could not have done the same thing.

Anyway, I'm very curious as to the circumstances leading up to Shimp and Brown being out, and whether there was any attempt to get mando isolation reversed.  Now, maybe the guys were sick as dogs, and it was a no-brainer.  But somehow I doubt that . . .

Anyway, congrats to the team for making the post-season and competing well in the regionals.  If the test result was a false positive, then it's a shame that possibly prevented Stanford from competing for a title.

“Two members of the Stanford men’s golf program will not compete in the NCAA Albuquerque Regional due to COVID-19 testing and contact tracing protocols," a school representative said in a statement to GolfChannel.com "Their status will be updated at a future date for NCAA Championships.”

Stanford policy still requires students to test twice per week, including student-athletes.

I agree that the current approach, when most collegiate players can be vaccinated, and the risk of transmission is low (and the risk of severe infection to those vaccinated is very very low) seems a bit behind.  But it's not a surprise; my employer has extended work-from-home allowances through at least the end of September, and the few of us who sometimes go into work need to get weekly testing (despite vaccination status) and observe masking and social distancing requirements.  Hell, until last week, they still had an enhanced cleaning protocol that said people couldn't enter a vacated room for at least 2 hours after the last person left, even though we know that the virus is almost never transmitted through fomites.

In the midst of the pandemic, I was a pretty strong supporter of restrictions, but the reason for that was to get us safely to now.  Most of the pandemic restrictions (testing, masking, quarantining, etc.) can be significantly relaxed if not eliminated entirely for those who are vaccinated.  And those who are not, should get the vaccine.

Is your company's 1 office - 1 person rule in place to address aerosol spread (real) or fomite spread (not as common)?

I agree that the cost of testing is high and 0.5% positivity rates don't justify widespread, routine testing of asymptomatic people without a known exposure.  That said, I still think testing makes sense for people who have reason to believe they have COVID, and for those who actually test positive, I think it's insane to not require quarantine.

Of course people should get the vaccine when they're eligible, but no children under 16 are fully vaccinated yet.

I personally have two rugrats, so I'll be masking in solidarity with them until they're fully vaccinated in October-ish.  As you can tell from that, I'm on the cautious side and I'm in the group who says the mask never bothered me anyway.  Even though I don't expec others to adopt my level of caution, I still am confused about your apparent position that COVID-positive athletes should be allowed to play in competition where they may expose others.
