Today.  But, this is golf.
Yesterday, absolutely everything you said would have applied to Rachel Heck. Now she’ll be lucky to make the cut.
Who knows?  Tomorrow those comments may be spot on for Rose Zhang.

Of course. Could be just the first round. Good article mentioning all our golfers playing today

Rachel Heck has dramatically improved in the board standings without having started yet in the second day.  At the moment she is tied for 59th with her +4 score from yesterday.  I haven't watched so don't know what is causing the high scores today.

Scores are high because the USGA wants it to be the toughest test in golf. Rough is long, greens are fast, and pins are not in the center of the green. Traditionally, the winner of the US Open will be a few strokes under par at the end of the tournament.

The top 60 and ties will survive the cut. As the morning wave finishes, the projection is +4 will be safe. It might move to +5. Rose Zhang is finished and well behind the cut line. Aline Krauter will need to shoot the round of her life. Heck needs an even par round. Megha Ganne still at the top of the leaderboard at -4, after her even par round today. 17 years old!

Ganne even today, tied for second at -4.
What a story.

Lucy Li in 26th at +2.

Heck even today, T41 at +4.

Zhang at +14.  Horses for courses, perhaps.

Michelle Wis'a +9 knocks her out, at +12.

Looked like Wie maybe hurt her wrist (an ongoing problem over the years) trying to power out of the deeeeep rough yesterday. Not surprised she tanked today. That's really a tough course with the rough higher for the tournament. It's hard enuf without that feature.

RE: Womens Golf: Rachel Heck article Golf Digest - winflop - 06-04-2021

Conditions out there looked absolutely brutal. I'm thinking I'd be lucky to have kept it in double digits!

Two made the cut, three didn't

Ganne -4 T3
Heck +5 T47

Krauter +10
Wie +12
Zhang +14

RE: Womens Golf: Rachel Heck article Golf Digest - winflop - 06-05-2021

Ganne -3 T3, 4 shots back
Heck +9 T49

Wow, Ganne is gonna be an amazing add to the team when she gets here...in fall 2022

That was an epic fold in US Open by the leader, Thompson . . . but that's also golf, particularly in that tourney.

I actually was impressed how Thompson kept her composure as the lug bolts loosened and the wheels completely came off on the back 9, and she putted poorly on 17 and 18.  But this one is going to haunt her for a loooooooong time.

Ganne, otoh, holed a par putt on 18 to earn low amateur.  Nicely done.  Great talent; great smile.

Lexi Thompson hits her drives about a mile and a half. Unfortunately, on the back nine, she hit a few wedges about a foot and a half... :-0

RE: Womens Golf: Rachel Heck article Golf Digest - oldalum - 06-06-2021

Rachel Heck was just +1 on the difficult layout today, and ended tied for 35th. Incredibly good! If it wasn't for Ganne, all the compliments would be directed Heck's way right now.

I blame her caddie. He got excited and nervous and was increasingly in her ear on every shot on the back nine. "You need to be close", etc. in a yapping voice. He would make me nervous and I'm not even playing.

Dont know what happened there. I'm the "I blame her caddie" poster. Agree with last point re Ganne also.

RE: Womens Golf: Rachel Heck article Golf Digest - Softball Fan - 06-06-2021

I'm not a golf fan except when a Stanford student/recruit is involved. Every caddie I saw was male at this US Women's Open.  Is there a reason for that?
