I know I'll turn on a few games this fall out of habit, but honestly I'm looking forward to the day Stanford pulls out of the racket (and there are worse words to describe it) that is college football.

I don't think the answer is to add more teams to the conference, at least not for football. There aren't enough (any?) teams in the west that add value in terms of dollars, academic prestige and competitive programs.
I think the answer is something that was brought forward but never really implemented - a more formal agreement with the BIG10. Reduce the number of PAC12 conference games to eight, and schedule one or two games per season between the BIG10 and PAC12 teams. Gets more people watching PAC12 games with some very good schools.

I'm with you... and yet you and I are still on this board. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Texas Tech possibly; TCU doubtful, Baylor no way it will happen.
I don't see the PAC-12 gaining all that much from adding these teams. I don't see Stanford gaining anything other than a few extra bucks from TV revenue.

In the very best case perhaps a few extra bucks, but splitting the pie 14 ways instead of 12.
TCU has some brand name recognition and they're in the metroplex, but adding teams for the sake of adding teams doesn't make sense.

I looked at this from a different angle. I can't see the woke crowd at UC schools accepting a Christian based college into the conference. I personally don't think it should matter because no one is going to be forcing religion on others. But the professors and students at Berkeley, UCLA, and possibly Stanford will be screaming about the right to choose.

FWIW -
Membership in the Association of American Universities (64 US members, 2 Canadian) is a mark of distinction that helps identify peer universities.
In the PAC 12 (if I counted correctly), only OSU, ASU, and WSU are not members. In the BIG, only Nebraska is not a member.
Neither Baylor, Texas Tech, nor TCU are members. An issue would be whether the conference wanted to remain one of similar schools or not.

If we were to bring in Texas Tech or TCU when we previously had considered Oklahoma and Texas ... that'd be another slap in the face. The only two schools that I think worth having were UT and OU, athletically or academically.
Baylor would be just awful.

well Utah did not join the AAU until 2019 so membership was not a deal breaker when they joined the conference
https://www.aau.edu/sites/default/files/AAU-Files/Who-We-Are/AAU-Member-List.pdf
I was surprised to see Georgia Tech was not a member until 2010
Current Big 12 members in the AAU
- Iowa State
- Kansas
- Texas
so of the 64 in the US if I counted correctly in the Power 5 there are
Big 10 - 13
Pac-12 - 9
Ivy League - 8
SEC - 4
ACC - 4
Big 12 - 3

Funny, the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri previously doubled the number of schools that are members of the AAU in the SEC. Only Vanderbilt and Florida were members before A&M and Missouri joined. The addition of UT will increase their number to 5 (of 16).

we've already had 1 commissioner asleep at the switch. you want another one and the one who appears set to preside over the Big-12's demise?

The case for Rice is that it is an AAU member located in the fourth largest city in the US (i.e., a very big market) and in the middle of a talented bunch of high school athletes (Texas). Unlike some of the schools mentioned, it has not had a scandal. Seems to be a good fit with the PAC 12.
The conference could take four schools. The PAC-8 schools could be PAC West, with Stanford as the academic anchor. The other schools could be PAC East, with Rice as the academic anchor.

if conference realignment is largely about sports particularly football and the $, Rice only serves to further erode perception the Pac-12 is already fighting -- concerns about quality of play compared to the other power-5 conferences

PAC-12 already hired a new commish. He may be over his head at that position, but he was a capable AD.

thanks. I agree with you that he had a good run as AD particularly the Harbs hire (middling other places too). however, he appears to have been completely caught off guard on the TX/OU move. not too good a look. may be too he is too worried about a possible new job in Indianapolis as opposed to doing his current job?

That's one way of looking at it. However, every other P5 conference has their dogs in each of the Big 3 men's sports, and
Rice would not be coming into the Pac-12 by themselves, but rather, in all likelihood, with another 3 schools. Obviously, Rice would have to make a major financial commitment to improve facilities as part of any deal, and would also likely have to agree to a much smaller share of TV revenue in the near term.
Having said that, as the poster above mentioned, Rice does bring one of the best TV and recruiting markets in the country (Houston) and academically Rice is a perfect fit for the Pac-12, especially with it's latest decision to grow enrollment by 65% of the next 5 years. And while the recent performance in the Big 3 men's sports have been sub-par to the say the least, expectations are for football to finally be bowl-eligible this year (in Bloomgren's 4th year and with the recent transfer of QB Luke McCaffery from Nebraska) and basketball to post a 20-win season (with virtually the entire team returning, along with a couple impact transfers). And baseball is on the path back to national stature with the hiring of Jose Cruz jr as head coach, and with the infusion of 5 transfers already. Also, though clearly not revenue sports, Rice women sports ranked in the Top 26 in 5 sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball, indoor/outdoor track) and Top 35 in tennis.
