Well, there is the old winged A's logo...

I should have said "winged A logo" (replying to someone mentioning the winged G logo)

I find this very amusing as my town's high school just swtiched their nickname to the Guardians from the now unacceptable Tomahawks.
The logo was designed by a student. Somehow seems to echo the winged G to me (though not clear why).

In 1915, the Indians name was not expected to stick.
The Indians name was not supposed to stick.
“The nickname … is but temporarily bestowed,” wrote the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “as the club may so conduct itself during the present season as to earn some other cognomen which may be more appropriate. The choice of a name that would be significant just now was rather difficult with the club itself anchored in last place.”

I found it curious that they just changed the spelling at the beginning...from in-dians to guar-dians. It'll save them lots of money just to get little stickers with the "guar" to cover the "in" on their letterhead, business cards, etc. ;)
It's an odd name, just like the Mighty Ducks was, apparently inspired by a movie in some part.

Cool statue, but guardians
of traffic doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Guardians
of the Galaxy.

I think the new nickname and logo work, in no small part due to the gut feel of looking at the scripted writing and thinking "it's not
that different." The Hanks video is good; and Guardians of the Galaxy also helps.
Taken together, I think Cleveland Guardians will take hold and folks will get comfortable with it very quickly . . . [edit per Terry's post below] . . . unless derailed by trademark/naming litigation.

Apparently, there's already a roller derby team named the Cleveland Guardians, which owns clevelandguardians.com. I assume the baseball Guardians must have agreed to purchase the name. I can't imagine that they could have missed such an obvious issue.

I'm in solidarity with my fellow alums who were undergrads in the 70's when the mascot change was in the works and who overwhelmingly voted for the new mascot to be the Robber Barons. I say own your legacy and poke some fun at it.

When I was in grade school, a rival school was known as The Crusaders. When that proved not-PC-enough, they went with "Travelers." Loooooove that one. "We weren't maurading, pillaging, looting and destroying...we were just tourists."
And separately, I liked the Cleveland Spiders. There were also Negro League franchises from Cleveland known as the Blues, Buckeyes, Elites, Hornets, Infants, and Stars. Any of those would have been fine.

They could have used the logo from real guardians namely the 37th National Guard Division based in Ohio. 794 KIA in WWI, WWII action in New Georgia, Bougainville, the Lingayen Gulf landings and recapture of Clark Field and Baguio in the Philippine Campaign. Did mop up in North Luzon. 1,094 KIA. Called the "Buckeye Division" its patch was a red circle with a white ring around it and a thin silver circle border.
Maybe Eric can post a picture.

Quote:Cleveland’s Major League Baseball franchise will continue to use the name Guardians after the club reached an “amicable resolution” with a local roller derby team of the same name.
Terms of the agreement, which was announced Tuesday, were not released.
