“
Ezekiel 25:17
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides
By the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men
Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will
Shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness
For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children
And I will strike down upon thee
With great vengeance and furious anger
Those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers
And you will know my name is the Lord
When I lay my vengeance upon thee”

—Spock, The Wrath of Khan

Trivia question, what is the medical significance of his meal?
BC
In some ancient cultures the liver was considered the seat of life and even the seat of the soul, though in Greek Aristotelian science and metaphysics, the heart was considered the seat of the soul.
Nice try, but there is something very specific about those foods in a psychiatric patient. Perhaps one of the other physicians on this board will get it?

My reply focused on the psychological/mythological elements of why a psychotic(?demonic) killer would eat the victim's liver, and make Hannibal a cannibal. It's true that all the elements of the meal were high in tyramine, and if someone were on a monoamine oxidase inhibitor for depression, all the elements of the meal could trigger a hypertensive crisis. To my knowledge MAOI's are not used to treat psychosis. Many ancient cultures and myths involved cannibalism, and in fact an article published in the journal Science in 2003 suggested that early humans practiced extensive cannibalism. From depth psychology and Jung's delineation of the collective unconscious and archetypes, one might surmise that all these hidden programs or engrams lie hidden in the unconscious that can be expressed once a mental breakdown occurs. Our culture is fascinated by the mythology of vampires, creatures that suck blood rather than eat organs to gain life-force and memories. In Native American mythology, a demonic cannibalistic creature, the wechuge, seeks out human flesh. It's our fear of the unknown and irrational that lies buried within the human psyche that makes this movie so powerful and emotionally engaging. I actually believe the author was being clever in Lecter's remark, but MAOI's are not something likely to be used on a psychotic, brilliant killer, unless they intended to feed him fava beans, liver and Chiante in prison.

i agree that he is referencing mao inhibitors.
he wouldn't be implying that he was taking maoi's. that meal would then be dangerous.
i take him to be showing off (or amusing himself) - ie it's lecter being clever rather than the screenwriter.
maybe psychotic but more likely anti-social personality disorder with ptsd as a secondary diagnosis. neither of which - i agree - would be treated with maoi's.

Yes, it was a reference to MAOIs; the point was to tell Jodie Foster’s character that he was supposed to have been in medication, but that he hadn’t been taking them, since, as noted, the meal would have been dangerous had he been taking them. As others have noted, MAOIs aren’t typically used for his likely diagnoses (in fact, by then they weren’t used for much of anything), but that wasn’t the point. The point was Lechter showing off that he was smarter than the psychiatrists that were supposed to be treating him.
