Rumor is $20 million.

It was $20 million+ at one point as recently as 1-2 years ago but closer to $10 million now, which explains why he lasted as long as he did.

RE: Clay Helton Fired - newguy - 09-13-2021

my hope is that we win enough games this season to get a few more coaches fired.

Don't forget, in October 2018, USC agreed to a $215 million federal class action settlement for the George Tyndall gynecology scandal.  On top of this, in March 2021 USC agreed to a "global settlement" of the remaining sex abuse cases for $852 million.
Oh, and in July 2019, USC paid UCSD $50 million, and gave an apology, for hiring away an Alzheimer's Disease researcher and his staff via duplicitous means.
USC's previous President was a prodigious fundraiser, or so it was reported.  That came in handy.

Shaw to USC

Helton to become an analyst at Alabama (isn't that were all fired USC head coaches go...)

SC can't afford Shaw, particularly in light of Embo's post.

I rarely revel in others misfortunes, but there are exceptions. Toejam football is one of those exceptions.

I was wondering this myself.  Clay Helton lasted two days, but he doesn't carry the shortest time between a loss to Stanford and a firing by himself:

Clay Helton, 2 days: loss to Stanford Sep 11 2021, fired Sep 13 2021
Steve Sarkisian, 23 days: loss to Stanford Sep 19 2015, fired Oct 12 2015
George O'Leary, 43 days: loss to Stanford Sep 12 2015, fired/resigned Oct 25 2015
Sonny Dykes, 50 days: loss to Stanford Nov 19 2016, fired Jan 8 2017 (via twitter!)
Jeff Tedford, 31 days: Oct 20, 2012 loss to Stanford, fired Nov 20 2012
Charlie Weis, 2 days: loss to Stanford Nov 28 2009, fired Nov 30 2009
Tyrone Willingham, 30 days: loss to Stanford Sep 27 2008, fired Oct 27 2008
Bob Davie, 8 days loss to Stanford Nov 24 2001, fired Dec 2 2001
Tom Holmoe, -13 days: loss to Stanford Nov 17 2001, resigned Nov 4 2001 (ok, maybe this isn't fair)

I guess I just got the impression that we caused opposing HC's to get fired, so perhaps it's just Helton, Weis, Davie, and Dykes, considering that none of them coached another game after the Stanford loss for their teams.

Oh, c’mon now… Even at $10 million, Helton’s getting paid more for losing the game than Shaw’s getting for winning… and Shaw still has to go to work!  Helton gets to sit by the pool for the rest of the season!

Shaw is obviously being underpaid… :-)

Which in itself is disrespectful of Stanford, isn't it?

We still are not held in very high regard in the CF World.

Well, what is the denominator of coaches fired mid-season (especially outside of USC)?

Moreover, isn't one of the reasons you fire a coach is that they lose to a team perceived as inferior?  Helton would likely not have been fired had he lost a game to Oregon.  It was precisely because we were not held in very high regard in the CF world (more specifically in the USC wolrd) that it led to Helton being fired.  Again, I doubt that Helton is fired if we had been a nationally ranked team fresh off a drubbing of KSU.

An alternative explanation is that Stanford has become a football rival to SC in the last 10 years or so (since 2009 What's Your Deal game) in a way UCLA or Cal isn't (we have consistently been better than UCLA during that time and beaten them all but 1 year during our one losing season in the last decade+). And when you get so thoroughly embarrassed and humiliated by said California rival, and the alums publicly abandon an already unpopular coach with the fanbase, the AD feels the need to make a change, particularly ~1-2 months ahead of the most important early window in recruiting.

I actually think the admin at SC respects Shaw and how competitive we have been through most of his tenure (as well as Jim's before).

And with that, Shaw gets to claim the career series against Helton, 4-3.  Wins at the 2015 championship, 2016, 2018, and 2021, and losses in 2017 (regular season and conference championship, and 2019).

RE: Clay Helton Fired - pcgoode - 09-13-2021

Strikes me that a lot of good coaches might not be interested in the circus that is USC football. With all of the turnover and relative lack of success, I just don’t think it’s as good a job as the Trojan faithful think it is. All kinds of stories about how they should go after Mario Cristobol (and others). Does anyone seriously think Cristobol would leave Oregon for USC?!?

Well, of course the devil you don't know might be a better coach than the devil you do, but USC is like 0/4 in post-Carroll coaching decisions, so there's not much reason to think they will be better this time.

RE: Clay Helton Fired - Austroturf - 09-14-2021

A couple of comments:

The ESPN write-up today pegged Helton's buy-out at $12M.

Since the big upset in 2007, Stanford's record against USC is 10-6 overall and 1-1 in conference championship games (2015 W, 2017 L).  Helton has 3 of those 6 Trojan victories, while Sark (2014), Orgeron (2013 acting) and Carroll (2008) each have one.

And JT Daniels proves again that it isn't always a bad thing to get beat out and forced to transfer.  He now gets to ride high with the currently #2-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, while Kedon Slovis must try to steer the Trojan ship into a shaky future.  Where would you rather be playing QB?

Have you guys been hanging out on twitter pretending to be USC supporters?
After upset loss to Stanford, fans troll USC, pretend to be donors asking for Clay Helton extension

Certainly not in your world.  I truly don’t think they said - “Gee, he lost to. Stanford.  Fire him.”

Helton has been on the hot seat since the day he took the job.

The fact that Vegas thought that USC was 17.5 points better than Stanford made this loss particularly stinging for SC faithful.

RE: Clay Helton Fired - Goose - 09-14-2021

Agai, it is not just that they lost. It is how they lost. They didn't play well on offense or defense. The coaches made no significant in-game adjustments to defeat what Stanford was doing. After the loss, Helton had nothing to say except that give us time, we will be fine. That refrain had already worn out it's welcome at U$C. The U$C coaching staff is also kind of cobbled together to appease the fan base who didn't like the program trajectory and blamed the assistants. Going Air Raid was not Helton's choice. As a result, Helton had to hire people with which he had no history and no relationship and who he really didn't choose. While they all may be good coaches, their ability to work together is/was suspect.
Helton had to go because the program was stuck in a place the fans didn't like. Whether a new guy can fix that is a good question. The idea there are inherent "social "problems at U$C does have some merit.
