RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - Lorcan - 10-23-2021

It looks like all three doubles teams have safely advanced to the Round of 16. Choy and Xu with a stern test next against the third seed from Cal in Alsola and Richardson. I'll be curious to see how that one plays out tomorrow.

Here's a question.  Why is there an "M" playing in the womens' tourney.  Check out the "Gender" listed for Yotova on the following players list.

https://colleges.wearecollegetennis.com/competitions/StanfordUniversityW/Tournaments/players/069089F9-1C02-43BD-82B5-B68774093F12

Another question.  Why do they need to specify gender for a womens' tourney?  If they are playing in this tourney, isn't it assumed, and required, that they at least identify as a woman?

Freshman Alexandra Yepifanova won her 3rd match to advance.
Blake won her 3rd match and advances.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - Lorcan - 10-23-2021

FYI -- it looks like the draw updated to reflect that Houghton lost to Magrini in R2 -- so no Houghton vs. Rosenqvist match to look forward to a result for.

To answer your question, Marty, it's probably just an admin error or the coach didn't update it when signing up the players. It's probably to do with the website that they're using for the draws. I wouldn't read too much into it.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - Lorcan - 10-23-2021

Angelica Blake heard the criticism of her going to three sets in the second round, and served up some bakery goods with a double bagel in the third round.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - Lorcan - 10-23-2021

I really hope that score is wrong, but it looks like Connie Ma lost to Simran Chhabra of San Francisco, 6-1 6-0.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - BostonCard - 10-23-2021

I see Ma in the quarterfinal.  Also through are Yepifaniva and Blake, with Xu into the round of 16, playing Cal’s Angola.

I think it's a mistake.  I looked up Mya Bui (also listed as M) on some Internet articles and video.  I would bet the farm she is a biological female.

It's an interesting question about why gender is specified.  Are they now allowing biological males to enter women's tennis tournaments?

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - BostonCard - 10-23-2021

My guess is that it is a quirk of the software used to display the scores.

Yeah. They updated it. At first it was Ma's opponent listed in the next round. Whew.

The sex is listed because often for tournaments like this, there’s a men’s bracket and a women’s bracket, so the software form has a place for it. In past years, you’d see the player entry list for the tournament with a whole bunch of names, both men and women. But yes, there are no self-identified males competing this weekend. Occam’s Razor suggests this was just a data entry error.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-23-2021

At long last, the draws have been updated, and it looks like Alsola beat Xu 7-5, 6-2. A bummer, but a nice run for the freshman.

As it is, we have three singles players in the final eight, and three doubles teams in the last sixteen.

Doubles Round of 16
All matches 10:00am

(1) Blake/Ma vs. Villan Pereira/Babic (SJSU)
Choy/Xu vs. (3) Alsola/Richardson
(5-8) Madurawe/Yepifanova def. LaMette/Bente (Cal Poly) 6-1

Singles Quarterfinals
All matches at 11:15am

(2) Ma vs. Kimberly Bhunu (Cal Poly)
(5) Yepifanova vs. (1) Vanessa Wong (UW)
(6) Blake vs. (4) Jessica Alsola (Cal)

I really hope they manage to have live scoring for these matches, because Yepifanova-Wong and Blake-Alsola could be barnburners. Seeds would suggest that Alsola will play either 2 or 3 singles for Cal this year, right where we’d expect Blake to be. Who has the edge?

Doubles Quarterfinals
All matches 1:00pm

If we all win R16, likely matchups are:

(1) Blake/Ma vs. (5-8) Mould/Teixido Garcia (Oregon)
Choy/Xu vs. (5-8) Broerman/Sosnowska (Gonzaga)
(5-8) Madurawe/Yepifanova vs. (4) Martinez Vaquero/Colyer (USF)

Anyway, someone asked on here a while back whether this was a particularly good class overall for recruiting, and I think we’re seeing the evidence that it was. Last season saw us welcome two recruits, both highly-rated, and one (Houghton) who was a top 3 recruit in the country. But neither of them was seeded here, while three freshmen from Stanford and one from Cal all were.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-24-2021

It’s raining and doesn’t look like it’ll stop today. Unclear how they’ll get the matches in, but there a a number of good indoor facilities in the area. One would hope Stanford lined one up as a weather backup, but if not, they’d better figure something out soon.

The other quarterfinal is (3) Kozyreva (SMC) vs. (9) Fortin (UW), so that’s three from Stanford, two from UW, and one each from Cal, St. Mary’s, and—in quite a surprise—Cal Poly. A good sign for UW that their top two is doing well.

The team Twitter account says they’re “moving inside” to play doubles, but we have one indoor court?

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-24-2021

Madurawe/Yepifanova through to the doubles quarters, but I’m not seeing any other Stanford results yet.

This seems like a project for a rich donor.

From your lips to Arrillaga’s ears…. It’s always been a bit embarrassing for a program at our level that we don’t at least have enough indoor courts to hold a dual match in case the weather is bad.

Or, and this would be easier, a big ol’ tent to put over six of the outdoor courts. Some rig we can throw over the top if the weather looks threatening, with lights and everything—at least we could get matches in that way and we’d spend a fraction of the money. Or a nicer pavilion type thing around the Taube South courts, so it’s like an open air setup but with a roof overhead. Feels like it’s happened enough that a university like ours could find a good fix.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-24-2021

Choy/Xu fell short, but Blake/Ma make it two Stanford duos in the quarters, which will be held tomorrow morning. The singles quarters are tomorrow as well. It’ll be a full day!

Build an alternative indoor site at our Notre Dame in Belmont.

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-24-2021

Here’s Monday’s schedule, at least for now:

Doubles Quarterfinals
All matches 11:00am

(1) Blake/Ma vs. Kozyreva/Massey (SMC)
(5-8) Madurawe/Yepifanova vs. (4) Martinez Vaquero/Colyer (USF)

The semifinals are also scheduled for 11:15am, but so are the singles quarterfinals and semifinals, so the order of play remains unclear.

Singles Quarterfinals
All matches at 11:15am

(2) Ma vs. Kimberly Bhunu (Cal Poly)
(5) Yepifanova vs. (1) Vanessa Wong (UW)
(6) Blake vs. (4) Jessica Alsola (Cal)

Obviously those matches can't happen at the schedule time, because people can't be in two places at once. But I assume the goal is to get through the semis today so that everyone else can get back to their respective campuses. But the courts are drying out and we should be able to see tennis on court soon enough!

RE: Women's Tennis: Northwest Regionals - ColoradoTree - 10-25-2021

Looks like Blake/Ma on Court 1 (can't tell the score) and Madurawe/Yepifanova on Court 3 (leading 4-1, I believe), in case you want to tune in.

I can't tell you the score, but the level of tennis on Court 1 is terrific. Ma and Kozyreva just going at each other like a heavyweight bout.

And they are playing 8-game pro sets for this round, looks like. Madurawe/Yepifanova went up 6-1 and they're now up 7-4, trying to close it out on Madurawe's racquet.

Nope, broken to 7-5. Then we get a deciding point on USF's serve, and Madurawe makes yet another error and it's 7-6. Now it'll be on Yepifanova's racquet. From what little I've watched, Madurawe has not impressed. This is good fight from the USF duo, sure, but this one should have been over a while ago.

Another deciding point, this time on Yepifanova's serve, and USF takes it to make it 7-7. We'll see how this one ends up, but it's been a very tight, tentative last 4-5 games I've watched from them. It'll be a tiebreak.

4-2 up in the tiebreaker. Then 4-3. Then 4-4. Sigh. Then 5-4 up again. Then 6-4 after Yepifanova's slam at the net helps bail out a surprisingly weak Madurawe second serve. Then 6-5 as we can't close it out. Now USF's serve. Then Madurawe dumps it into the net after a long rally, and it's 6-6. How many chances to win this are they going to let slip away? Madurawe make a nice play at the net and it's 7-6 Stanford, and they'll get another chance to close it out, this time on Yepifanova's serve. But she double faults, and it's 7-7. But a service winner makes it 8-7 Stanford again, and USF will serve again. Yepifanova makes a couple great plays at the net, and that's it! They pull it out 8-7 (9-7). Way way tighter than it had to be, but they're through.

Not sure how the Blake/Ma match ended up, so I'll have to see what the draw says unless one of you was watching it.
