RE: Men's BB Preseason Poll - winflop - 10-28-2021

My vote is realistic thinking. I don't think the team is very good, and will finish in the bottom half. That should make it Haase's last season, but who knows.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

RE: Men's BB Preseason Poll - Papa John - 10-28-2021

I'm predicting NIT flameout, and that's the optimistic me.

I wonder what those same nine guys predicted for the football team.  Hmm...let me guess...

There are folks who vote with their heart and others who vote with their brain. As a Stanford fan, I always vote with my heart. But yeah, even my heart cannot see an NCAA bid.

I considered doing a simple two-item poll: will, or will not, Haase be fired after the 2021-22 season? As you can see, I decided on the more finely grained poll, and it's producing some interesting results, IMO.

Going back to my original intent, only 7 out of 31 respondents so far are predicting that Haase will be fired by season's end. Even more interesting, 14 out of 21 respondents predict that Stanford will not make the NCAA tournament yet Haase will not be fired. That says much more about the AD than the coach, of course.

That says more about perceptions of the AD than about the AD himself.  TBD what actually happens.

So you think no buy out that Haase can recruit even if no contract past this season? Oh I so very much doubt that.
However I do have a bridge for sale

The contract is a big concern. No clue how long it runs but we have a top 40 player visiting and that wouldn’t happen if the contract ends this year

RE: Men's BB Preseason Poll - Phogge - 10-29-2021

They had a five star last year who played 20 minutes vs the Warriors last night. Weird year but it seemed that he didn't play 20 good minutes in all of 20-21.

I stand corrected.

I don't quite understand what you're saying, BobK. Maybe a reflection of the post-partum (in terms of coaching at Stanford) lawsuit filed by Johnny Dawkins?

For my part, I predicted that Stanford would make the NIT, but Haase would not be fired.

RE: Men's BB Preseason Poll - BobK - 10-29-2021

Maby think Hasse will be let go if no NCAA
My thought is they won’t buy out his contract
I have no idea but suspect his contract runs thru 2023 at least

I mean, let's say that don't want to buy out the contract... what happens when recruits start citing uncertainty about the coach for not signing?  That's a recipe for an endless cycle of contract renewals to ensure recruiting doesn't suffer and not firing because you don't want to buy out the contract.  At some point you have to bite the bullet, no?

If only Stanford has a ginormous endowment that yielded obscene amounts of money/returns for the university . . .

Hey BC said that they didn't win the Ted Cup. Fire all the coaches!

(10-28-2021, 01:09 PM)Spiny_Norman Wrote:  I am torn about Coach Haase. He's personable and a straight shooter. I like him personally. He recruits with the same energy and hustle with which he played. Stanford has had good players on his teams. Stanford has had a 1st team All P12 player each of his 5 years - Reid Travis in 2017 and 2018, KZ Okpala in 2019 and Oscar Da Silva in 2020 and 2021.

But we have not seen the results. One season in 5 with a winning record in conference. One season in 5 with a postseason game. Stanford has lost in the 1st round of the P12 tournament 4 of his 5 seasons. It's been really frustrating.

A key reason for lack of success - shooting. With one or two exceptions, Stanford has been a bad 3 point shooting team for years.

Also the guard play has been sloppy. Too many turnovers, not enough assists.

I think that Stanford is no better than a .500 team again this year. If we see improvement in the guard play, shooting, and end of season play, I might feel better about the result than in years past. I don't see Stanford getting much better either. They are fighting with one hand behind their back because they don't really play in the transfer game. They will be in rebuilding mode every year relying on frosh while P12 opponents will be retooling with juniors and seniors who started (maybe even at an All Conference level) for other schools before transferring.

100% with you Spiny. I would love for Haase to succeed, but the results simply haven't been there. Injuries yes, but even if you give him a complete punt on last season (which I don't - he lost the locker room), the whole has been consistently less than the sum of the parts. This season is probably the lowest talent level of any roster other than maybe his first season, due to graduations/transfers/one-and-dones. Some of those are on Haase for mishandling things last season.

I was so positive about Haase when he was hired. Looked and sounded like a great fit. It just hasn't worked out that way. I'll be watching on TV this season and rooting, but I'm not paying money to watch this team and I don't have high expectations. I hope Haase does well in his next job.

RE: Men's BB Preseason Poll - Papa John - 11-08-2021

Bump. Last chance to get in your vote before Tuesday's opener versus WAC member Tarleton State.

For a Stanford connection, Mark Madsen is head coach of fellow WAC member Utah Valley.

RE: Men's BB Preseason Poll - needle - 11-08-2021

Easy to be optimistic--all you need is for two of the new frosh to walk in and be better than Da Silva and Wills!

Seriously, we've seen enough of MBB to know that it's pretty hard to predict who's better than who in the conference, as there's a lot of player comings-and-goings. It might seem unlikely that the frosh can provide a brobdingnagian lift, but we've seen guys like Terry do just that. Might as well be optimistic on day one, I say.

RE: Men's BB Preseason Poll - Papa John - 11-09-2021

As of 9:45 am Pacific time on Nov. 9, 45 votes are in. Here is a summary:

* 15 voters predict that Stanford will make the NCAA tournament, and, presumably (because I didn't ask), Haase will not be fired by season's end.

* 6 voters predict that Stanford will make the NIT, but not the NIT Final Four, and 4 of those 6 say that Haase will not be fired.

* 8 voters predict that Stanford will finish in the top half of the conference but not participate in a postseason tournament, and 5 of those 8 say that Haase will not be fired.

*16 voters predict that Stanford will finish in the bottom half of the conference, yet 12 of those 16 say that Haase will not be fired.

All in all, 36 of 45 voters predict that Coach Haase will not be fired. So here's hoping that he's retained because of regular and postseason success!
